I often find it irritating to have to tell people that an alt of mine is actually me (often by relogging using my main). I also find it very annoying that on a standard day in corp or alliance chat, I have no idea who half the characters are because most people (especially in my corp) have between 3 and 15 accounts (yes, genuinely).
I would like to see an optional feature in game where you could choose to tie all (or even just a selection of) your characters to appearing as a single name - the name of your "main". The following should make it a useful feature but not leave it open to too much abuse: - you can only link characters you personally own to your mains name (identical IP address could be used to ensure this). - When your character talks in a chat channel, the mains name would show but perhaps a mouse roll-over would reveal the actual character speaking. - Any player could turn off their ability to see someone else's main in the first instance if they didn't want to use this feature. - A variety of options would allow you to choose for whom your alts names showed up as your main (e.g. only corp mates, only alliance mates, only people with positive standing towards you, everyone., etc etc.)
Many players already do this globally by using very similar names for every one of their characters. I would like to see it being made available for everyone and including a degree of customisation. I think this would make communicating with players you speak to on a regular basis a lot easier and less frustrating.
Note: I have already been told that two different people could be using the same IP but presumably the technical/programming side could be fixed by someone with more knowledge about it than my meagre helping. |

That's what the Notes tab in the char info is for. Use it.

I have done in the past. But it's a pretty sub-optimal solution. It means you have to [show info] and then go to the notes field every time you want to check who somebody is. It is also a lot more time consuming to set up because it means every character entering identification for every other character, rather than each character entering the needed information once about themselves (the difference in hassle between n-squared times and just n times). Finally, if you want to talk to someone and have them know who you are every time, it means asking them to add notes to all your characters rather than being able to take that decision yourself. |

As long as a player has to choose to have their characters linked I am OK with this. |

I just have member titles on my alts that make it clear, but then i am in a corp with ~10 people in my timezone...
"Marauderbuster in chief" and "backup Marauderbuster" It's not "REALLY" an intel leak but its useful for the directors who check corp member titles going "wait PI DRONE was that XXX or YYY?" |

I agree. One of the barriers to me using an alt is that I want everyone to know who I am. (There are other barriers, also.)
I see this very commonly that people have to get used to all of a person's alt names when it would be so much easier if you could see who their main is right from the chat list. I'd push for giving players the option to make it visible without mouseover, perhaps by giving them a small tag in one corner that indicates they are not playing on their main and you can mouse over to find out who the main is. It needs to be something immediately visible because when you have a lot of faces to go through, there's no reason for you to open the info tab on every single one of them just to find out which scrub is actually your CEO or somebody else important. That's way more work than it needs to be.

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys. It's good to know that this is something that annoys other people too!
I had forgotten that titles are a way of keeping track of a persons characters. It could certainly be done that way but there are a number of disadvantages; - There is no reliability to it; the game does a person with the correct roles giving the same identifying title to several peoples characters. - Its visibility cannot be manipulated; if it is in place, it is visible to everyone. - Only someone with roles can do it which means that you have to pester a director/ceo if you want it done. - You have to "show info" on every person to see their titles. - You need to be familiar with the persons main before you can associate the title with their alts.

I have the alts that I want people to associate with my main having a similar name (whichever of these alts I'm on - you can still call me Xe) I have the alts I DON'T want to be recognised on as a completely different name.

For posting an idea into F&I:
come up with idea, try and think how people could abuse this, try to fix your idea - loop the process until you can't see how it could be abused, then post to the forums to let us figure out how to abuse it.....
If your idea can be abused, it WILL be.

I can see a number of problems with this: 1) Doesn't work if you want to be able to buy and sell characters at any point in your eve career. 2) Doesn't stop someone else imitating you by copying your characters name ("oh, hai, I am totally that guy, this is my noob corp hauling alt...") which in turn leads people to being unable to trust your method of association. 3) Requires you to decide at the character creation stage which characters are going to be associated with which others. 4) Leaves you no way of dissociating your characters at a later stage should you want to.
