Edited by: Vector Victor on 22/11/2003 16:15:39 Well, my guess is that they'll do as pretty much all of the other MMOG's are doing.
Electronic distribution - just download the client and signup for an account online. (The client is actually already available online, it's about 400 meg's)
The same goes for a "relaunch" and getting shelf space in the future. They'll do the same as everyone else. Expansion packs!
It's just logical to do it that way. Everybody else did. And it worked for them
Oh - forgot, "EVE 2" is not a very likely thing imho. Sequels are usually done 5+ years after release and they are always a fresh start (wipe). I'd bet on 3 or 4 expansion packs before that happens

advertising is everything if you advertise it people will buy it, simples as that. There is no up hill battle. They have the problems worked out now and content rolling. They get a new distributor a new box heck they can release it as an "expansion" or sequal if they want. Point is advertising and how well it is advetise will be the do all end all. _______________________________________________________ Get custom sigs and graphics done here Unforgivn Website

You're still advertising an old product against new products. You're advertising a product based on the reputation you've already established by your previous performance.
That's the uphill battle. "Just add more advertising dollars" doesn't do feck all for established products.

utter bull****.
i see to variants:
1. different box, same game. ppl will go absolutly crazy about this. shops will buy it in huge amounts, customers queing like for the latest harry potter release. i can t wait for that ccp TV-ad (nearly forgot it: )
2. tara: the player owned stations expansion. after month of promised SOON, finally we ve got to pay for it. players will love this. would cause a mess if it was a success, but ppl couldn t buy the original game. so it would have to be included "revised and extended". (lame!)
so i agree, future looks grim. biggest problem are the stores, i doubt they fall for advertisement (without big bucks rolling..)

Why is everyone so hung up on boxes? Make it a free download and spam the links to the world. Hell, make sure its available on Bit Torrent and Kazaa.... If you really want a box to keep on your shelf like a trophy then print out an Eve screen shot and wrap it round a tissue box :)

Eve was pulled off Best Buy's shelves LONG befire SSI was sold. According to a Customer Service Manager it was due to complaints of it crashing too many computers during its usage. The problem was easy to reproduce so they pulled the game instead of selling something that could tarnish their image.

Because a box on a shelf still has a higher conversion ratio than a banner on a website. And Internet Advertising takes a lot more effort than people know.
A conversion being the person that actually buys X product after clicking through the banner. A conversion ration of 1:300 is considered good nowadays. The clickthrough rates on banners nowadays is around .5%.
So in order to get a single signup, you're looking at needing a banner getting around 60,000 impressions. Dunno what the advertising rates are currently for major game sites but you can easily expect them to run a couple grand. For the month, if you're lucky. Plus there's the time factor of developing the promotional material to provide variety to match a site's scheme and audience, keeping the proomotional material from getting stale, working out the 'small' details such as payout % and/or per click rates.
That's why boxes are better. Store X orders Y number of units. You get Y * Store X's cost in cash up front and a much better chance of converting a person that bought that box into a customer for at least 1 month past the initial.

Jash I think you're underestimating the impact the current playerbase could have on future sales. Word-of-mouth advertising is more effective than you give it credit for, especially in the MMOG genre where a lot of players have friends, relatives, coworkers, business associates and forum-friends who play games.
If CCP gets its act together and starts releasing patches that actually fix bugs and add content, I don't think they will have a problem maintaining and gaining players for EVE. Unfortunately that's a pretty big if, judging by the fact that patches that do more than just fix glitches in the UI are becoming the stuff of ancient legend.

Varuna - Jash is right on target as far as the playerbase goes. Right now, word of mouth is that it is NOT worth the purchase. Lack of promised content, lack of meaningful and in any way realistic combat, all of this is on the game sites and more. The actual rating numbers on those same sites - IF THEY EVEN RATE IT - are not very high.
Put all this together with the newer games coming out, with all their advertising hype, and the product history of EVE, the other factors Jash mentions, the failure of the first distributor - and don't think THAT isn't a factor in the store's purchasing decisions - and it doesn't look good.
Don't know about ya'll - but I've seen a declining playerbase in all the Corporations I play with - including my own. And all of those ex-players are NOT preaching sweetness and light about EVE to all their friends, etc. - that "Word of Mouth" thing ya'll are talking about.

Right, read my post again: I said if they fix the game, if they start adding content, and if they make it worth paying for - then the currently playerbase might be a valuable tool for drawing in new players.
Naturally word of mouth works both ways; my point is if they fix the game now they still have a chance to salvage a playerbase by using us to tell our friends "Hey, they actually made it fun to play." But, this is contingent on them being a lot more successful with the upcoming patches than they have in the past.

i went to CompUSA today because i wanted to buy 3 accounts for a couple of friends for Christmas...anyways, the dude i spoke to said that the memo he got was that EVE is shutting down and stuff of that nature... Also he said that used to be a Polaris and he got killed by m0o =)))) but anyways, it was kinda interesting to see what people have to say about this. I just hope that CCP doesnt shut down EVE, even if they are close to bankrupcy(which i doubt...30k subscribers...) and just sell it to another developer. I dont NEED a bigger playerbase, but id like to keep the one we have. That might mean that CCP need to put out good content out...

Harr harr harr,
Blimey bad news mate if yer asken me. Could be the doom for Eve.
On a serious note Im very concerned about the lack of advertising and the lack of availability for the game. Ive not read anything in the magazines about rumors that Eve may be shutting down. Assuming they have around 20K subscribers thats $260,000 per month. Does anyone know what it would cost to rent the servers and the upkeep for the London facility?
It may be they've just got their money out of it, made some cash, and now its time to pack it in. I think the complete lack of Tech II materials is very disturbing considering Tech II is probably an easy thing to introduce compared to player stations and stuff like that.

Eve was advertised? Jash, no offence. But virtually no-one knows about Eve. Hell, I only joined because a friend who played was taking considerable time out of his schedule to play it . *If* CCP gets their act together, removes the lag, sorts out the PvP issues (including, but not limited to missile knockback, ship appearing before environment is loaded, the carebear V PvPer verbal campaign...(Not to be mistaken with the good guys vs bad guys campaign )), releases new tech etc etc, Eve has a good chance of re-releasing. A *very* good chance. Virtually all the gaming sites on the net gave Eve a high rating. Yet, for some reason they never put Eve on their front page. People see CCP's new ad campaign and look at the sites-it's had two good reviews already. People won't buy? I consider myself a professional gamer ( ). And believe me when I say CCP *could* pull it off if they do what they've promised to do.
The likelihood of CCP getting out all the things they've promised, on the other hand, I won't speculate on . _______________________________________________________________________

Several things are hurting EVE right now.. No distributor No positive word of mouth Not many positive reviews in US media (US PC Gamer magazine gave EVE a 55% out of a possible 100 ) These factors tend to hinder a product's growth.
I myself think EVE has great potential. Unfortunately, it's not reaching it's potential. That burden lies solely on CCP's shoulders. The ball is in their court.
The goal of reaching a 5 year long storyline, is optimistic at best, given the current state of affairs. EVE is my first, and last,MMORPG. The experience has been disappointing overall. I would really like to begin enjoying the game..while there are still some people actually playing it.

Er... what?
I honestly don't know if this statement makes me want to laugh or cry.
There's a reason that 99% of people who you talk to will remember Windows 3.1 as the "first" Windows. You know why? It was the first one that worked. Windows 1 was an utter piece of garbage compared to EVE and Windows 3.0 wasn't much better. Windows 3.1 was still unreliable, but you're talking about issues that go far beyond anything that anyone is experiencing in EVE.
Comparing an OS to a game? Apples and oranges anyway.

It was a rough road for CCP right from the start. They had this brilliant roll out plan for EVE (keep the player base as small as possible) which was nearly ruined when the players on line soared to 6,300 in June. They have managed an astounding recovery from this though and have managed to whittle the playerbase back down to desired levels.
Now it is time for phase two of the master plan. A massive advertising blitz to launch Eve into the forefront of online gaming. In fact, rumor has it that they have booked half the ad spots for this years Super Bowl including the coveted pre-kick off slots - all 3 of them!!!!! This years Super Bowl half time show will also feature Britney Spears & Bjork in a special salute to EVE presentation. Going to be awesome.

Fact or rumour? It can't be both lest you live by oxymorons . But that sounds very ambitious. However given the massive failure of the Amarr event (0nly 200 players got in, and the rest were sent to lag hell) Then phase 2 could end up being a damp quid.

I never said the game doesnt have issues like every other game. Yes we could use some more content and tech 2 and such forth. however they already told everyoen it's coming so why bother *****ing about it unless they dont deliver. On top of that people were complaining before because of to many patchs and bugs crying to have them do bigger patchs they test more. Well now they are doing that so I really dont see the issue here. Also lugnut i'm assuming you work for that best buy?
Some info for you all if you don't believe me. Diable 2 patch promised took over a year to deliver. A patch from sierra for there nascar racing game took 6 months to deliver both of which were promised months ealier. So i guess the point is when ccp fails to give it to you in a timely manner and it beccomes january without even seeing tech 2 then you all have a reason to complain. CCP is now in an uphill struggle to increase the playerbase. And that 'hill' is actually a good sized mountain instead of the normal sized hills most games in this genre go through. Saying "We planned this" would motivate me to cancel my subscription immediately if I believed, even for a second, that it was the truth. Because that would mean they have no business sense whatsoever
CCP has already stated that they are vamping up for a release in Asian markets. I believe they think that will be their saving grace, as the influx of new money and members will activate a game that has grown stagniate.

Edited by: Daemonica on 26/11/2003 01:53:34 There's a company out there called 'Snowstorm' or something like that. It's had multiple award winning rpgs and one that has been live for over 4 years. I believe the game is called 'Devil 2: Lord of Disruption.' That game still has over 20k clients logging 24 hrs a day. Now that is impressive for an old and rather simple game. But Snowstorm did something right to keep it's clientele interested.
I wonder what a company like that could do for Eve? Hmm... makes one wonder.
