I just recently tried to buy some copies of EVE for some friends of mine to get them into the game and found out that EVE has been recalled from EBX, EBGames, CompUsa, BestBuy, and practically every other store that I could find. The ONLY place I was able to find it was Amazon, and they don't have many copies. This is really scaring me b/c, while EVE has issues, it still think it's a great game. Does anyone know what's going on with this? Don't make me get my flying monkies. |

basically all our complaints were right. all the "Pay for Beta" thing was right all along, I believe the devs and what not said that they plan on advertising more in 2004. so basically the first 8 months will be "retail beta". Since this is thier first game, they needed to get the bugs worked out and we paid for it. I bet next year we will see the game re-released or something like that. ---------------------------------------

I don't care if I paid for a second beta, I will however leave the game if they do a player wipe with the "rumered" second release. Spelling corrections welcome, but don't expect me to edit my post. |

i think its great being a pay for beta, i mean if they do a player wipe, like said before ill leave the game, im not payting for my hard work to be wiped,...
but if we are left as we are... our corps will be huge, we will control the markets, we will have the ships to fear!!
so for the 1000's that were pay beta, if the marketing does well, and mass advertising.... hopfully we will have a huge game, with so much income, means more frequent updates and new tech...
so i think its a good thing myself

And I've got a bridge to sell you.
Initial release is vital to any product. It defines who you are and what you're capable of doing. Your future sucess depends on the impression and reputation you establish with your initial product.

My guess is it is to do with the SSI selling up... most likely it is to rebox with the new distributor (whoever that is).
I'd say it's not a worry... -------------------------------------------

Keep in mind you have to pay for shelf space when the retailers put your stuff on display. If those boxes weren't being sold then they probably decided to cut their losses and recall them.
I don't know if companies like Amazon would charge for 'virtual' shelf space, but that might be a possibility as well. --------------------------- (c) Copyright Saladin, 2005. Any editing of this post by a third party will be in violation United States Internet Copyright law 46525 of 2003. |

my guess it it is partially SSI havin somethign to do with it. Also witht he game so patched out of date it may be possible they want to update the games' manual and re relase it. Also everyone knows by now there will not be any player wipes that's just stupid talk. The game was put on a low key release because they knew with it being their first game that it'd have bugs they needed to sort out before the pushed the game. now that the bugs are sorted out and they can focus more on content they'll probably repackage the game with a new manual and look and send it onto the shelves with some advertising behind it. _______________________________________________________ Get custom sigs and graphics done here Unforgivn Website

Aye SSI was the dist for the North America and it was said months ago when SSI dropped the dist of games that it would happen. yet threads have still poped up about every week or so saying eve is thru since its no longer for sale in the US

LOL! "Deloup Drakar, stops rumors cold!" Nicely done m8.
In all seriousness, I think what happened with SSI could really benefit EVE. The devs mentioned that they wanted a slow, controlled start to their game and I think a rebox and re-release now that they are up and running will be just what they could have wanted.
Jash has a good point about initial release but then again, which is worse, having 300k people who have never played your game or 300k people who tried it when it was new and buggy and left it? I would think the latter and I think that is how CCP feels too.

Doing a simple search off of Yahoo's shopping search I was able to find more than enough merchants selling Eve Online. I would have to think that they were sold out and may not have reordered.

I am sure that when Windows was first released (1.0 or something) it completely sucked.
Way to go for a first impression.
Look where it is now.
And that is not the only case.
Answering where the copies of EVE went, I have a theory.
That theory is that only 40,000 copies of EVE were ever produced. The limit is placed because this was sort of a "pre-release" and it is not sure how the servers can handle the load.
As stores sold out, they did not reorder as the copies are limited. Those stores that still had stock had stock sent back to stores that were actually selling them. With sales stronger in Europe than it is in the US (personally I've been seeing more and more German players lately), I can imagine boxes from the US being redistributed to the continental Europe. As subs passed the 30,000 mark, the stock remains limited.
There is one constant in the software industry is that you have to keep trying and improving.

The reality is that retail outlet stores are doing what is in their own best interest. They only keep the most profitable games on their shelves because they have very limited space. The only store I can recommend would have it for sure would be Software Etc. If they don't have it, then something is definitaly wrong with this picture, because Software Etc. has just about every game that has ever come out, and alot of good deals on older generation games as well as resale games.
I know Eve no longer appears on the shelves of my local Wal~Mart, which is where I bought my copy, and I had never heard of Eve before I saw it there. I guess I'm a pretty good judge of game character huh.

I think Riffix is right, I think this has to do with SSH since they went under or whatever it was. They need to find a new distributor then have it repackaged before it will come back to stores again. It's just bad timing, If some of you remember Sierra shut down Dynamix only a couple months after Tribes 2s launch. Of course reguardless the game did great, and Tribes 3 is now being made :) ------------------

Edited by: CubePusher on 22/11/2003 12:43:25 Edited by: CubePusher on 22/11/2003 12:41:50 Well all i know is i went through hell to get this game, almost every place i could use to get EVE that this site reccomends didnt have it in stock. All the big stores (HMV, Virgin etc) had it under discontinued and i finally managed to track one down in a GAME store 10 miles away from me after spending all day on the phone. It seemed as if people didnt want me to have the damn game and if i wasnt told it was a great game i probably would have given up on day 1, in the end it took me near enough 2 months to get it which taking the p**s to be honest. You have to pay for the game fair enough, you have to pay for the game then pay to play it your asking alot but if its good enough i've got no problems, you have to pay for the game pay to play it but before you start that were gonna make you run in circles for a few weeks to try to find a copy. What makes it even more frustrating is the client is available to download on the friggin site, you dont even need the CD just the little sticker inside the box with the magic numbers that let you set up an account. If the distrobuter's are going bust or giving up on EVE CCP should just forget about the cd's and let people download the client and set up an account, i bet the only problem we'd have then is severs crashing from the strain of all the new players.
**EDIT**
Just thought i might aswell point out im in the UK so its probably a different story for other places.
Oh and the GAME store i finally managed get a copy from had EVE out of stock the second i walked out the door.

Edited by: IZON on 22/11/2003 15:13:11 Unless it's a sequel or destined for the bargain basement, IÆve never heard of any game being repackaged and offered up as ænew and improvedÆ I donÆt think you can play the same tricks with gaming software as you can with business and utility software, simply because the games market is different (and notoriously fickle).
IÆd be surprised if retailers give EVE the same amount of shelf space second time around, which is why I think CCPÆs resources would be better spent distributing EVE via online and going for magazine advertising (and perhaps TV sponsorship, if their pockets are deep enough). They should never have admitted that current æcustomersÆ have been æpaying to beta testÆ û that stinks no matter how you look at it and sales of EVE 2(?) could actually be harmed. Personally I do find it unnerving that many of the original warnings about EVE being released way to soon were well justified. A player wipe for EVE 2 would be disastrous for CCP, donÆt go there - youÆve been warned.

I think part of the problem here is something people plainly do not understand about the retail market:
A store isn't given a piece of merchandise to sell. They pay for it up front.
So when deciding how large to make their order for this 'New and Improved' version, they will look at the performance of the first release. Because Eve isn't a new game, it's an old game. Now your average cash monkey at Software Ect doesn't have anything to do with this. Not even the Uber Head Cash Monkey, the store manager. That decision is made at Corporate, who will look at the performance of previous sales and the prior marketing efforts. They're going to be looking at as many factors as possible to determine how probable it'll be for them to get stuck with worthless merchandise. Since Eve is an Old Game with a visible slow performance history, I'd not expect a massive order.
They'll also look at the fact that they won't be charging $59.95, which means a narrower profit margin and psychological factors affecting the chances of a customer buying a game. They'll also look at the fact that unless it's an expansion pack that the existing playerbase has to pay for, the response will likely be smaller than the response to release.
CCP is now in an uphill struggle to increase the playerbase. And that 'hill' is actually a good sized mountain instead of the normal sized hills most games in this genre go through. Saying "We planned this" would motivate me to cancel my subscription immediately if I believed, even for a second, that it was the truth. Because that would mean they have no business sense whatsoever

Edited by: IZON on 22/11/2003 15:52:58 I agree with you jash, CCP do have a serious up hill struggle on their hands, [one] - they have to persuade retailers that their product is 'worth' the up front investment, and [two] - they will need to persuade new and ex players that their game is also worth the investment. Well, I've been playing to beta test, what does that make me (but am I biased if I say I don't care)? Question is, can they pull the same stunt twice?
edit/ Question is, are they planning on pulling the same stunt again?
