Are there skills that reduce the cap, CPU and grid requirements of the various mining lasers? If not then I suppose you just train up Eng for grid, Elec for CPU and the various standard skills for cap recharge rates and such?
Thanks in advance all!

Not that I know of. There are rigs that will increase the cpu tho! ;p
Some ships have specific skills related to the mining lasers however. The barges obviously. Frigates like the Tormentor have a 60% reduction in mining laser cap use.
But as far as skills go, there aren't any. Just raise electronics and engineering and see what you can fit in there.

The mining upgrade skill reduces the CPU penalty for using one. It's not much but enough to make a difference. I wish there were Mining rigs. -Val When you look into that place where you dare not look. You'll find me there, staring back at you! |

Mining upgrade skill reduces the CPU use of a Mining Upgrade module- not the turrets, per say.

Actually, Mining upgrades (the skill) reduces the penalty of using mining upgrades (the module).
Each mining upgrade increases the CPU usage of a mining laser by some % (10% normally)). Each level of Mining Laser upgrade reduces that penalty by a certain % (5% IIRC) .. then you add the CPU usage of the upgrade itself.
So, for example, MinerII by itself uses 80tf CPU. There is no way (that I know of) to reduce that number. If you put on a single mining upgrade and have Mining Upgrades 5, then you are using 80*(1+[.1*{1-5*.05}])+30 CPU.
The gain and the penalty stack; multiple mining upgrades can give a serious boost to mining when stacked, but (using the numbers above) if you had 5 upgrades each mining laser you fitted would use 114.8 CPU and would get you 76m3 of ore per cycle (not counting other skills like mining/astrogeology)
CPU IIs are nice to miners that use Battleships. You're SOL if you use a covetor; you can't (easily) fit 2 mining upgrades on them (1 can be tough) [note: this is from pre-kali experimentation. I don't have a CPU boosting rig; maybe that would make the difference]

Without rigs, you need an exhumer to fit 2 mining upgrades, covetors and retrievers can't.

That's what I meant to say Shev. thanks for clarifying my muddy post.

Note that Mining Laser II uses a lot more fitting and cap than the other mining lasers ; you can frequently make a tight fit work (such as a Brutix mining tank, or a Dominix with a T2 tank) by downgrading a few lasers to something like an XeCL laser or else by switching your tank out to T1 gear (the Dominix works better on a T1 dual-repper tank than on a T2 one-repper lots-of-resists tank, and it frees up a ton of CPU). ---

If you're squeezed for CPU on a mining fit then there are several options available:
- Electronics skill increases CPU - Electronics upgrades IV allows co-pro II (cheaper than top named co-pros too!) - Use XeCl Drilling beams (lowest CPU mining laser) - Use N-Type hardeners in your armor tank as these use least CPU - Use less lasers
If you're squeezed for cap on a mining fit (especially if tanking) then:
- Energy Management and Energy Systems Operations skills - Train (deep breath for skills required) to use Modulated Deep Core Miner II and ore specific crystals. These use much less cap than Miner II and have higher yield. They are 'da bomb' for battleship tank mining. - Alternatively revert to Cu Vapor Particle Stream (highest yield T1 laser) - Revelations brings named cap power relays that actually are better - Fork out lots of ISK for eutectic or cap recharger II
Grid shouldn't be an issue on a mining fit
