Edited by: Crumplecorn on 15/12/2006 13:20:33 The orientation needs to be fixed, or 3-d mode is useless, and since 2-d mode is already fairly useless due to overlapping stars, I like some other people have started using P&P to set waypoints and destinations rather than bothering to open the map.
It still doesn't display right in stations, you have to go to system map to get it working right, and sometimes it gets stuck in between and requires a relog.
Sometimes it zooms in or out when I mouse over a system. Requiring me to fix the zoom level with the now reversed and absurdly oversensitive zoom.
Need some way to open it instantly. I actually like the transitions, but not when I find myself in/near a gatecamped system and need to rapidly change course. ----------

Was nothing wrong with the old map at all and i hate the new one. We need at least an option to be able to use either the new or old map.
Just another example of ccp wasting time on changing something that didn't need changing |

Not sure I agree with this one. It's the same as before, just 'flatten' the map and it is the old map. No different. When it zooms back to your ship, it rotates to your ships orientation so no change there, when you zoom out from your ship to the star map, it rotates to 'flattened mode' then zooms out. Which I think is fine.
Originally by: Synapse Archae 5. your actions dont move the map until after a delay
I've not at that problem so perhaps it's just lag, still a problem but not a map thing as such.
Originally by: Synapse Archae 8. The orientation is wrong
I think that is addressed by 'flatten map' option as I was saying earlier for the star map. It doesn't affect the system map though so maybe that's what you're on about?

I like the map but It needs an option to turn off the really frustrating zoom animations. They are really slow and wery annoying when you have seconds to get the right information from the map.

They should make it a graphics option. I really don't see why CCP did this. Maybe someone working there thought it would look cool? I really don't understand, they must have been thinking "Wow, lets not fix all the bugs, instead we can make a cool map!"

It does suck. Way too much crap going on in it and way too slow doing all this zooming. I liked the old one just fine.

Personally I like it, it's a nice evolution of what we had before into something that's more functional. I understand the gripes people have with it.
My only beef is that it's not truly "seamless" as others have suggested. I was expecting to be able to zoom out with my scroll wheel and get the system map, then the star map. :)

It's OK but the lines definitely need to be thicker (maybe an option or slider for line thickness would be nice). They are virually invisible on anything but the closest zoom.
Sometimes the lines all show up well for a little bit but I can't reproduce it.

It needs tweeking but the direction is GRRRRRREAT
Does the Map need somekind of crazy graphical hardware... because i simply dont see it being so slow, for mew it is quite fast. And I can understand it perfectly.
My only issue is that I cannot see my corpmates and the region lines are too cluttered, especially when I say to REMOVE the lines. =========================

It looks a bit cooler, but is far less functional, plus all the issues mentioned above.
I think this was a case of 'ain't broke don't fix it.'

The new map sucks, I'd like the old one back.
And wrecks are kind of ghey, I prefered the old cargo containers.
Actually now that I think about it, the old space wallpaper looked better too.
And the lag is higher. And my fps is lower.
About the only good change so far is warp to zero, got rid of my 4000 bookmarks.
Edit -
Actually if you really want to know the truth, the old Elite style interface with the radar globe thing and the big STOP button was 10x cooler than the stupid and clunky interface we have now.
It seems in alot of ways Eve is getting worse instead of better.

1) Give us an option to turn off the animation. Often in battle we are in a hurry to find surrounding systems, cut off points etc. We do not have times to have pretty stars go whizzing by us as the map zooms out.
2) Give us a shortcut key that simply allows us to set destinations without having to go into the map. Most people just want to set their waypoints for navigation, and not necessarily view the map.

So a change the reduces us to having to use the 2-D map because of new limitations on the 3-D one is fine? Right. ----------

If there was a way to look at autopilot destination/routing without opening the map I'd never open it again. People and places works for setting a destination, but its hard to see what a long route is. So... give us an autopilot window that we can see without the global map so I don't have to open that lagged out thing again! --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |

Yup - this is my biggest gripe with it (not discounting the others) but trying to work out where you are in the system and using the directional scanner to hunt without any visual indication of which way it's pointing (even in 2D) is horrible (unless I'm missing something obvious). By the time you've figured out where you are and which way you want to scan someone has scanned you out using a probe, warped on your six and as you're still looking at the map you don't see them coming...

Were there any complaints on it?
Only thing I wanted really was a way to freely combine the map filters to sif out custom data from the map....

I am not goign to go so far as saing it sucks jsut that it needs more owrk it does not do what it says it does, and as by prodcut causes interferance in to many other featrues.
where as once i used to jsut press the - zoom button to zoom out, i now have to use the scrole wheel ever system to zoom out and tis giving me R.S.I. I coudl really do with just he one click back not there 4 or 5 scrole weheel manovers it now takes.
and why o why does the camera alwasy have to defult zoom back in if you just got rid of that it would solv a lot of problems.
IN 0.0 you ahve to zoom out at every jump its matter of life or death, I need tos ee whats on the gates! (Doint say over veiw i dont like it)

Edited by: Arowe Telak on 15/12/2006 17:08:18 As many people have stated, fundamentally the map is fine but the problem is its both bugged and doesn't work very well. How this map got through testing I have no idea because there are a multitude of minor problems with it. The most annoying things to me are the hard to see lines, the lag associated with clicking on the map and actually getting to the point where you can see where the heck you are, and the fact its upside down with no way to right it.
Brighten the lines so you can see them zoomed out, make the transition from space to map a lot quicker, optimize the info boxes, fix the bugs with some of the display options (show corp members in space, show system ive visited, etc.) and lastly flip the stupid thing right side up. If those things are fixed it will be fine.

Originally by: mechtech -Route optimize needs to get away from the O^2 efficiency, and actually handle more than 5 waypoints.
Route optimization is the "Traveling Salesman" problem and is NP-Complete. The trival solution (check all permutations) is O(n!). Using dynamic programming you can get an O(2^n) solution which is still very expensive. There are heuristic algorithms that run much, much faster though and can be used for tens or hundreds of thousands of cities. The preprocessing required to find the distance between every pair of nodes is called the "all-pairs nearest neighbor" and requires O(n^2 log n) time using Johnson's algorithm. Preprocessing the whole map might be out of the question but it could be done on a regional level to achieve a huge speed advantage.
In short, an adequate grasp of computer science by the programmer in charge of this aspect would allow you to optimize any reasonable number of waypoints.
