Which one of these two browsers is better? I quite like IE7 I have that on my laptop and firefox 2.0 on my desktop. I hear that IE7 has many improvements and gives firefox a run for its money now, is this true? |

IE7 is definetly better by a mile. I've had a crap load of problems with firefox 2. FF1.5 was alot more stable tbh.. _________________________

Firefox 2 is faster, far more secure, and to be honest not even in the same league as IE7.
And unlike IE7, which is closed source and not extendable, you can get optimized builds of FF2 and make it go even faster. And the extensions of course... flashblock, adblock, fasterfox... IE7 is a joke by comparison.

I prefer Opera. I don't know if it's still better than the other ones.
Opera
If you do try it, be sure to learn the mouse gestures, get a new skin/'theme' and remove all the toolbars.

Check out this optimized version of Firefox for Windows (under Linux, just get Swiftfox). Combined with FasterFox extension it loads in under a second and can load pages literally in under the time it takes to blink. Just download the build appropriate to your system, and unzip it into your current Firefox 2 folder, overwriting everything (this will keep your extensions). Then, download the appropriate versions of the DLLs and run the Module Binder, and you're done.

I've been running FF2 since the first beta's and find it great, but I have to admit I've not tried IE7 yet, I can't bring my self to install it.

Haven't used IE in a couple years since I discovered FF.
I don't know if FF is feeding off IE, but I got a built in spell checker for stuff I write on forums and that's awesome for me.
See, look at that! I even spell awesome right! I used to spell it awsome <- but now that has a red line under it while I'm typing, lol.

So can anyone tell me what IE 7 has that would make me want to switch from firefox ?
And before you mention how fast it renders web pages, with my connection firefox can render a webpage faster than my connection can transfer the data to me. So for me its simply not possible for a page to render any faster, therefore those statistics are meaningless to me.
These are the firefox plugins I use, I won't be switching to a browser unless it can offer similar options as standard or with its plugins: - Linky - allowing the opening of all highlights links in new tabs at the same time, or all image links on a page - Flashblock - Blocks all flash objects in a page until I say I want them to load. This includes every add on a website I've ever found annoying, and it blocks them even if they come from a completely new URL. This means that after I got this plugin, I no longer had any use for adblock. - Nuke anything - allows me to remove an object from a webpage and have the page re-render as if that object was never there. Useful if there is an image on that page that is too wide, causing the text to wrap to that images width, not your screens width, or just plain annoying.

Look at how long every major browser except IE has had tabbed browsing (I think that mozilla was the first, but I'm probably wrong). I'd say that if anything, IE is feeding off the rest. -----------------

I used opera for a while (a long time ago), but stopped using it because the browser started randomly downloading banners at full speed. Which wouldn't have been much of a problem unless I was on a high speed connection, so it must have downloaded like 100mb of the crap before I uninstalled it.
I don't even know if it's still using the banners to get money, but firefox is good enough to not make me want to consider trying it.

IE does, and always will, use it's own web coding, rather than the W3C compliant coding that Firefox follows and support. This means websites look retarded in IE. Until IE7, there was no transparency support for anything other than .gif images.
It sucks, and it's direct linking with active-x means it is just a security nightmare waiting to happen. It's too embedded into the OS to be secure.
Firefox is an external application, that follows the rules, and fixes things.
There are also other options too, but I find firefox best of them all!

I use IE7, purely because whenever I start Firefox, my screen reverts back to 8-bit colour, and all my icons, windows, and userbars, revert back to what seems to be Windows95.

Anyone else had this problem?

Since im on placement as a web developer, the one thing I do like about IE7 is that it is a tad closer to rendering as firefox does. There are still differences in css behaviours, but it is making my life a little easier in making sure websites are cross compatible.
*sigh* now to browse the rest of our old sites and makes sure no more updates are needed to the templates!

Firefox really shines when you install extensions which is not something that is as easily done in IE at least for certain bits of functionality.

IŠve heard lots of scary ghost stories about IE7. Its like disease, it infects your computer automatically and takes it down. Only way to cure it is dreaded Format C: treatment.
