I played EVE for five years when it came out, but took a break due to changes in my family life. Now I am looking at getting back into it.
I am currently living in an area that has pretty slow internet access. I don't think that it will be able to handle fleet battles, so I am looking for a career that is not very high speed besides mining.
Is there anything that would be somewhat profitable that doesn't involve lots of combat or travel into low sec? I wasn't around when wormholes and planetary interaction were introduced. Would those be options? I'm not really into mining. |

Welcome back to Eve.
Might help if you optimize / set the graphics option for performance in Esc menu, basically setting everything to low.
As for a career, you could try out Exploration in high sec and see how your computer handles the game.
Anyway, hope you have a long and rewarding career this time.

Welcome back!
Setting graphic options does nothing for your slow internet connection. It's not like the graphics are streamed from the server. It helps with older computers though.
You could do Planetary Interaction, as that is just setting up some networks on planets and occasionally retrieve the loot. It by no means is a main activity though. Wormholes not so much, as that is basically nulsec space without local. You need to have quick reflexes to survive there.
You could do trading, industry, mining, and even mission running in highsec. |

eve uses very little in the way of bandwidth, My main issue is keeping a connection.
in game you can press ctrl+shft+alt+m to bring up the monitor, there is a network button at the bottom and you can see how much data is coming in/out. I imagine most activities wouldn't be a bandwidth problem. Fleet fights, maybe, but I don't have any data on hand.

How slow is your slow connection, having a specific speed rating would make it easier to give you a real answer.
If you prefer shoo other players then low sec may be a good place for you. Even when they have a fleet battle they tend to be significantly smaller than those in nul.
Joining a high sec war dec corp is another option but there are hassles with that as well, mainly that most of your targets will dock up for the duration, drop and reform as a new corp or simply drop to an NPC.
If shooting other players in not your thing then you should be fine doing whatever you want to do.
You can ignore the graphics settings advice that others have given you. I have a slow connection and it does not appear to be affected by the graphics settings I choose and I have tried them all from minimum to maximum. From this I can only surmise that the graphics settings only affect the clients performance and not the client to server connection. |

Welcome back to New Eden!
I'm sorry to hear about your internet connection. The good news is that the science/production side of EVE can be done in high security space without much concern for your pilot's life as you drop connections. Planetary Interaction could also be worth your time.
My suggestion would be to look for a corporation already doing this. Join them, learn from them, then ... OWN THEM .
Good luck!

I think a lot would depend on the quality - rather than quantity, as it were - of the connection itself. Having a narrow pipe might not be so bad (so a low-end DSL line, for instance), and would be infinitively preferable to having a satellite connection (very high latency). What sort do you have?

Go to speedtest.net and check your internet performance. Share it here. As far as I know the most important thing is your ping time. I've played with a ping as high as around 120ms. I think anything below 50ms is preferred though. I am currently running at around 25ms.
I believe you can also use ctrl+alt+shift+m in-game to see how your network performance is. If you click on "outstanding calls", you can see if your client is waiting on any information. I am a bit of a noob at this though, so if this is wrong, someone feel free to correct me.
If your performance issues are more along the lines of fps (frames per second) it's most likely your computer that is the issue. |

Do this OP, and come back with the info you get :)

A great career that helps the community and is "somewhat profitable" is solo suicide-ganking in highsec. There is at least one alliance that will pay for your ships, so the loot is all profit (even from your own ship).
You shouldn't find yourself on grid with a million other ships, so lag is minimal. Note that doing this with one account IS possible, though more difficult.
It's also a great way to have fun and get into PvP, and the low SP requirements make it great for new players too!
PSA Ventures are Illegal in Highsec. High sec is player-owned space now. See www.MinerBumping.com

Thanks for all the ideas and advice. Here are my speedtest results: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4661393060.
I am on a satellite system in Afghanistan. I move around periodically, so I will have periods of time when I can't access eve. I think I am going to train the PI route and then train for T2 haulers for low sec runs.

Satellite is horrible, very very bad latency.
Previous thread the OP was told to keep it to market trading and what not. Maybe you will have better luck...
Been around since the beginning.

Is there anything profitable to do with exploration once I find the site? I was under the impression that after I find a site it is going to be full of NPCs. Is that something that I can fight with a covert ops ship on a bad connection? |

LV4 security missions are fairly safe, especially in ships like the Rattlesnake. The main issue is the long training time. Aside from that, you could take a look at careers in trade or logistics (moving stuff from A to B). |

You could sell the site location if you cannot run it yourself ,you can also scout wh space for stuff that has been left laying around .....basically I lived in wh space before and had a terrible connection so spent my time scanning ,and scouting which my corp mates were happy about and gave me perfect experience to be able to travel across the galaxy as quickly as possible
Also we were cut into pve activities as equal share for defensive scouting ....in all my time when I was in wh I barely left my cov ops and made A ton of ISk |
