Wow, AC pvp didn't even hold a candle to M59. M59 came down to pure skill in every encounter.
I played on 103 mostly, a bit on KuRgEn and a lot on Bountyman.
The guy who taught me to play was XRaven/KuRgEn/Precept/Clone (can't remember which #), and I'm sure a lot of other names. He was a lot older in M59 than I was as he played with Moonwalker and Black Daggers for a long time. I remember that he had me switch servers to 107 with him to build up and help fight a war with his old buddies, but he accidentally sent a bcast with a Black Daggers banner he was working on and that was the end of that. Noone would let us build at any hour.
We then started The Roughnecks on 106 until we all were banned for violating stupid kill rules implemented by the GMs. Stuff like not being able to kill the same person 3 times in 24 hours or not being able to kill more than 10 members of the same guild. That was when the gang sort of had it for us.
Glad to hear you guys are around.

Back in the early 90's, before Meridian 59 or UO, AOL had a game called Neverwinter Nights.
Based on AD&D, you had to pay extra to play it... hourly... and it was all about pvp. It had a GUI, hundreds maybe thousands of players, npcs, items... everything you'd consider an MMO to be.
P.S. I never heard of Meridian 59

yeah M59 is definately the first... i remember in 1995 when i heard about it. Tried for so long to get my computer to run it and log on... but i just could not make it work... was even accepted into the beta... but *sigh*
so i kept on playing MUD's until EQ came.... EvE-CCG Spoiler Database |

Had to edit my post to say 106, not that crappy 103 server :)
The worst part about this game was update day. I remember those small updates taking hours on a 56k connection. UGH!

Just a bit of mmo history. And i could be wrong..
But the first online persistint GUI game would have to have been the origional neverwinter nights, which launched in 92.
There are quite a few things that came out before UO, and m59 was definitly one of the earlyest. the realm also came out before UO.
UO was sort of the end point of the classical era of mmos.

Neverwinter Nights was the first online game I ever played. I started at the tender age of 14. Since then I have played almost everything that comes out and beta most of those if possible. I tried M59 for about a month then went back to Neverwinter Nights. M59 was good but wasn't as much fun for me, although waiting to log into NWN kinda sucked at times. My char was Kilrex on the 106 server.

Ah, Meridian 59. That brings back a lot of memories - I was on 109, myself. Good times, good times. ------ Director, No Quarter "There is no problem that cannot be solved by the judicious application of violence." |
