I heard a dirty rumor that there was a large HP contingent in BoB and I was just curious to the validity of the rumor.
It has been a long time since my days in Meridian59 and since I've heard the words Hidden Power. I know that Koss went to EQ for a bit with a small group and then that was the end of it.
It would be interesting to know if those from Meridian are still about.

Where I will agree that most current MMO players played EQ, I believe the gentleman was referring to Meridian 59 and the days of Hidden Power and the lack of understanding. There weren't a lot of people who played the original Meridian 59 which is probably the first true GUI-based MMO and a game which I consider to have some of the best PVP to date still.

I've been playing MMO's for close to 14 years now, and I've never heard of them. That's quite the arrogant statement you just made

Edited by: JimKong II on 22/12/2006 03:31:11 Ultima Online was the mother of all MMO's where all the oldies started their first MMO. EQ was the downfall of all decent mmo's with it's carebear not pvp crap.
I also read in eon that TomB and another eve dev or two used to play Ultima Online back when it used to be good, so you can see why EVE turned out the way it has.

That depends on your definition of MMO. Meridian59 when released by 3do was the first 3D GUI MMO ever released and aguably defined the genre as we know it today. It was released in its early stages in 1995 and went commerical in 1996.

M59 was the very first 3D GUI MMO. UO came out quite a bit later. M59 was a blast. The most people on a server at a time was around 100. You pretty much knew or heard of most people. I played since early beta, and it was great. I think I was on server 101 or 102. It was so long ago that I don't remember for certain. Maybe somebody can refresh my memory.

So, eh, what's stopping you from playing it now ?
Quote: It was re-released by Near Death Studios, Inc. in 2002 A new rendering engine was added to the game in the Evolution expansion on October 2004, offering an alternative to its Doom-like graphics. This expansion also included features like dynamic lighting, rebindable keys, mouselook, and other visual improvements.
The game is now aimed primarily at fans of PvP (Player vs Player) combat, as it is virtually lag free and has a player-run justice system implemented to mediate killing of other players.
Unlike many online RPGs, it is not based around character levels and classes. Instead, each individual skill and attribute, including health, develop independently of one another. Hit points (health) are acquired by killing monsters that are a challenge for the player. Mana (magic points) is acquired by exploring and finding mana nodes in the game world. All base attributes except karma are static, but they can be adjusted with certain items and spells temporarily.
There you have it, EVE without ships and with monsters, with slight stat-grindage capabilities, no lag (yay) and almost 100% PVP action. _ My skills | Mod/Rig stacknerfing explained |

The post wasn't about me wanting to go back to M59, I've played at NDS before and I really couldn't get back into it as what made Meridian great was it's playerbase.
The point of the post was to find out of Hidden Power was still around or not and if they were in EVE.

The eyes aren't what they used to be, I thought it was -95, however, I'm not picky. I'll do 1985 Playmate of the Year AFTER I'm done with -95.

Hi Gallager,
IÆve just finished doing some major renovations to the Hidden Power website. I was testing some Google page-ranking and stumbled across this forum entry, so I made a 2 week pass.
A few of our people played EVE. To play the name game, I believe Gitski (Ivo Donimo) & Hitherto checked it out, although IÆm not completely certain. The only large HP contingent in BOB IÆm aware of would have been a long time ago in the Border of the Badlands.
Not to say the guild is dead, itÆs been going strong since Meridian 59 beta. Towards the end of m59 Anax, Samuel Adams (Sniper) & I were leading Reincarnates together, when we finally quit m59 for bigger games, we merged with Malachi, Sedrik & Thrain of Hidden Power. WeÆd pretty much all grown up together in PA, and while small guilds were great on m59, we had to pool our numbers for SB/L2/WOW/etc.
There is a large faction playing World of Warcraft on Haomarush Horde. I quit because of time / no loot drops / couldnÆt kill other horde. WeÆve been hoping Darkfall Online will come out, but every day that seems less & less likely. IÆve practically written it off as vaporware at this point.
Swing by our website if youÆd like - hiddenpower.com - youÆre certain to find a many familiar, memory-inducing names over there. The forum stays active + itÆs got RSS support for news & popular forum threads.
Cheers, Rhodri (m59 aka: Baggle / Galloway / Sturgeon)
Sidenote: Many of the UO developers originally worked on the Meridian 59 project before joining the Origin team.

Hi Gallager,
in the early stages of Eve and Eve-beta were a couple of the HP-EQ Faction. Also there have been quite some people from The Mercs, Sinister, The Regulators and Begotten. However most of them have vanished or started new Chars. AFAIK the Rumor you heard about a "large contingent" is wrong.

I actually remember you Baggle, I believe you used to play on the free server as Trewq, but I may be wrong. That was in the MAFIA days with TSRU.
I was in Apotheosis for along time, which was around the time of Reincarnates, was really good friends with Necro.
I also remember the very early days with the emerald bug in the bank =)

I also have been playing MMOs for a very long time, and text MUDs for 10 years before that. Ive heard of m59, but i still wouldnt say the pvpers from there are the best. Nor, UO. The alltime king game for pvp until Eve came out, was by far Asheron's Call Darktide server.
No GMs, no Guides, nothing, no rules, pure chaos.
Gang warfair, no level protection nothing, the minute you logged on usually you met with death and the first thing out of anyones mouth was "Swear or Die". When you died, you dropped equipment, usually hierarchies controlled areas of the game, there were absolutely no safe areas, you could never hide from pvp, everything similar to pvp EVE has today.
When I say PVP on that game was the best until Eve simply is, that the game mechanics in that game allowed dedicated and talented pvpers, to "run cast", dodge magic, using movement, it was definately a good game back when graphical MMOs were just comming out, and much better than the point and click system that UO had.
