What do you tell people when they see you playing EVE, and they ask what its about? I've run into this constantly where i'll be playing and i'll have people ask me "well what's the point? what are you doing right now? why?" I usually tell them its too complicated for me to explain or that the point is just to blow stuff up. Anyone else come up with a different, wittier response? |

I tell them it's something to do if you're either a masochist or have the patience of a saint. I don't recommend EVE to my friends. None of them have my tolerance for insane timesinks where you cannot achieve anything cool without paying X amount in subscription money first.
Before you say it's a lie, tell me how many people succeed in fleet actions, PvP or incursions without elite core and gunnery skill proficiencies as well as the ship skills, and without having to be carried by the people who DO have this.
Or being lucky enough to have eighty enraged buddies who haven't trained past frigates to rabidly swarm people and things which annoy them. |

EvE is a very hard game to describe.
I just tell them it's like being in a really cool science fiction novel that is still being written.

I tell them its the only game that have real consequences. I ask them if when they shoot a lvl50 nub in modern warfare that same nub lost any perks and the gun they earned, would it be cooler game. They say yes, but most of my friends don't like sci-fi or fantasy. Or to lose their e-stuff either. Wimps. |

I keep the door to my office locked when playing eve, that way I can dodge any questions.
When people ask what games I play, I tell them Modern Duty or Call of Warfare, something they have heard of, then quickly change the subject. |

I told my brother-in-law, who is a bigger gamer than I, that it's a libertarian paradise in space. Very few rules, free market, player-created content, pure PvP (with very few exceptions). It's a time-waster of epic proportions, but you need to be prepared to nut up. It's a griefer's paradise, a gaming experiment, science fiction in its purest form.
When you boil it down, though, it's just spaceships. And that's what makes it so ******* awesome. Leaves only the fresh scent of pine. |

I tell them its a game of infinite possabilities and variety since practically nothing in the game is static an almost everything is competition on some levels. Actions have real recourse and if you screw up, there is no respawn with your epic gear readily at hand.
They generally turn and run at that last part, but a few are intrigued and have signed up. |

A good friend (having got caught playing Eve at work) told his superior Eve was a graphical front-end for a SQL DB checking program for both PEN testing and integrity, consequently it had to run at least twice a week.

I tell them that it's complicated and open ended. Half the fun is learning how the complicated mechanics work. The other half is being able to choose between a wide variety of careers, ranging from running factories to hunting down other players.
I also add the disclaimer that it's pretty boring for an outsider to watch, much like how it would be to watch someone else read a science fiction novel. |

It's EVE online, a virtual world set in a dystopian future where capitalism is the only law, spaceship pilots are immortal, diplomacy matters, and trust is the most valuable asset that anyone can have. Essentially it's Capitalism & Gunship Diplomacy at its finest, set in the far future.

I Say
EVE Online is the great, great, grandson of the BBC Micro 'Elite' game.
It is a sandbox game that allows you to build spaceships, space stations and allows you to explorer
Which instead of a universe full of NPC Pirates, EVE has a far meaner and nastier set, real players who can show the real depths of human depravity!
Which makes it a far greater challenge to overcome all the odds to survive and thrive!
Not a game for WoW kiddies, who are after instant gratification of their addiction to instant gratification |

Its a game where you can be a **** if you like and have zero repercussions to your physical self while at the same time hurting someone else emotionally. Its the internet, win/win where you can feel ike the man you want to be while suffering real life issues that you can in turn inflict on others.
Disclaimer: Not that I do it, but "tears" that so many thrive on for entertainment and lack of respect is just a general opinion I have of the EVE community. |
