I love the overall look of EvE ships. They are all very distinctive looking, youll spot one in space and say "this one HAS to be *insert specific race here*". In all movies and games ships are symmetrical, so EvE took a different step and I'm glad for it (who needs symmetry in space anyway).
That aside, I play amarr partly because I liked how their ships look and Harbinger is most beautiful ship in the game (imho of course). Amarr designs just reflect their race tradicionalism (symmetry and everything).
I've seen only few ships that I think of "whoa, I don't want to be in THAT thing". Probably Moa being one of them :D
Bottom line is- EvE ship designs are very distinct and unique, let them stay that way. Lots of designwork has went into them, so they could reflect their race's mentality.

Edited by: Lady Loom on 03/01/2007 23:45:09 distinct and unique doesn't have to be ugly, IMO
and despite of caldari vessels shield tanking, they still have to have some sort of structural integrity. Maybe it's me as a civil engineer but not even a powerful shield system can save a ship that (at least looks like it) breaks apart if you sneeze at it, and thrusters located at the oddest places just to add a "distinct" assymetrical look for the heck of it is stupid. All IMO

Originally by: Khorian Actually, there is something called the golden ratio (sectio aurea) wich is roughly a proportion of 2/3rd, that is regarded as the perfect proportion.
Or to be precise, the square root of five divided by two. Or the inverse. Not hard to work out if you take the limits of a Fibonacci set.
And yes, very few ships seem to follow it.

"I wonder is there done anything or will be done anything to Raven's model in near future. The ship is so ugly and also so common that i would like to know if something could be possibly done to make it look better. I also have feeling that im not the only one who thinks this way. "
It's hourses for courses, to be honest. "Ugly" and "nice" and "cool" is very relative and you'll often get three different opinions out of two people asked. Personally i don't see anything "ugly" about the Raven, and since so far no one complaining about her ugliness actually bothered to clarify what aspects of the looks they find so terrible, i really cannot tell what these opinions are coming from. This is to say am not saying people with that point of view "are wrong" or anything, i just really cannot tell what they're thinking when they say so... and since the complaint is extremely generic, it's not helpful.
I suspect it may be similar problem for the designer as well -- telling them "it's ugly, fix it" doesn't help at all because it has zero constructive value... as in no way it hints to determine what's in this case considered "not ugly" by person in question, and what kind of "new Raven" would be found worthy the praise.
That, and since it's quite obviously not possible to please everyone, i don't know if there's any incentive to put extra work into changing shape that's now liked by some and disliked by others... into a shape that will be liked by some and disliked by others. As at the end of day it means the work was pretty much for naught and the effort/time could be spent on something more practical instead o.O;

You want specifics? Gte in a raven, and look at it from astern, looking towards the bow. now see that "wing" sticking out with all all those fins sticking out in between the hull and the "wing"?
It reminds me of someone sticking there arm out, who has extremly hairy armpits.
Since ships are traditionaly female (with notable exeptions, Russian warships are masciline for example) This means I have to stare at female pit hair everytime I look at a raven.

Well it's no different from staring at Gallente girls :s
* ducks
that said, it never made me think of anything like that... whenever i look at that piece it reminds me of steering wheel of the old sailing ships (or heck even modern ships for that matter)

Take the Dominix for example.
I can't think of anything that I could say to a designer besides: "It's ugly! Fix it!"
It's great playing Caldari-online, isn't it?

I find many of the asymetrical designs in eve to be very appealing, especially the kestral, that has been one of my favorite ships since beta :D
I think the main reason why many of the ships look strange is because they put thrusters all over the place for no apparent reason.

Let's face it, ships in EVE are designed to look cool, not to prove as practical space vessels in the real universe. Somebody said symmetry wasn't important. Well, ask a NASA engineer about that. Ships in EVE behave pretty much like their counterparts in any low budget science fiction game when it comes to physics. Do you have retro thrusters or rotational thrusters on your ship? Neither do I.
That's not important and I for one prefer the current "star wars" concept above fuel tanks with a*****pit and number of thrusters distributed around the ship making it look like those space ships in X-plane for instance.
Raven looks a bit odd but it's brute! Give it a facelift in the form of a new skin, add some polygons and detail and we're there.

Anyone who says that faces are not symmetrical has never taken an art class. I wish the ships in EVE were more symmetrical.. if some of these ships were made in real life there's no way that they would fly straight. I'm not saying that everyone should be flying around in round flying saucers, but I'd like to see some symmetry. I know that this is a game, and it doesn't have to reflect the real world at all really.. but what else are you going to do on a 20 jump long journey but look at the butt if your ship?

Welll....
I have a habit of building the ships at least once before starting to buy them
When I built my first scorp, I didn;t know that "production efficiency" meant that the 1 million less trit I used would mean that it would be lacking a wing... It would be a really pretty ship if only it had its second wing... :(
As for the moa... I stopped building ships. Something was awfully bad with my production skills. I thought someone was pulling my leg giving me sh**tty blueprints for his son's toys after throwing them for a game of chicken with an 18-wheeler...
Seriously, some of these designs, including the raven, would be really *to my taste* (pretty is rather subjective i suppose), if you took half the ship and mirror-imaged it.

"Anyone who says that faces are not symmetrical has never taken an art class."
High facial symmetry in real life is desired trait (on genetic/instinctual level) because it's rare enough to make such people stand out in the crowd. If it was something common it would be no big deal and nothing people would be getting excited about.
A good art class should cover that -- the symmetry is both an ideal and simplification taught for aesthetics' sake. But if you are trying to make something true to life, don't make it 100% symmetrical or it winds up looking like these artificial computer renders.
more details about symmetry and attractiveness of it you'd ever want to know -.o

just making it more symmetrical would fix it, i wouldn't mind better textures and more polygons either
this is my uber fast sketch, maybe something along these lines, it doesnt need to be 100% symmetrical, the tower adds nice twist

that sketch is a quite good start.
However I would be happy if they just ditch the tower and give the whole thing textures at a quality like the rokh's. Its still a great PvE ship and the looks are quite nice when "screenshotted" from the right angle with a lot of darkness.... *cough*
