Hello all, listen to my idea please I would like to run a farm, either as a stand-alone building for when the SPOSs are introduced or as an add-on for a POS. Basically you get some livestock or veggies, get some food/fetilizers/soils/stuff and wait. Sometimes you would need pesticides/antibiotics. This would produce more livestock/veggies. For this to work I propose that livestock be split into several smaller groups such as cows/sheep/pigs/space turkeys/fedo/etc and some veg being added. you could have an "animal husbandry"/"Green fingers" skill that increases the weekly/monthly output of your livestock/veg They also interact with eachother as veggies could be used to feed animals and animal waste can be used to fertilize plants. However, the main problem is... Why would anyone BUY Livestock/veg from a farmer? that's what needs thinking about. Perhaps Animals can be reprocessed into biomass and so would have an NPC market or required for outposts and stuff, veg...hmm... that's more difficult.. So come on all you smart peeps out there, help me refine my farm idea.

Okay add this to your idea.
Once they introduce walking in stations they have in-station restaurants that serve the meat and veggies you grow.
Different meals can provide different effects, from simply fulfilling hunger to booster like effects depending on the quality of the food.

EvE already has "Astrofarm" structures in some Deadspace complexes, so this could be a reality.
Now, it would be somewhat harder to find the use for products that it would make...
Perhaps you could consume the diary products it would produce, and, say, gain a "Well Fed" buff that would increase your Spirit and Stamina by 15%... oh wait...

So your actually proposing to have sort of a farm pos put into eve? I hate to say it but, cool idea! I cant see how it will help lol but yah 10/10 for creativity.
Maybe a i dunno 'food system' could be implemented into the game like your pilot needs to eat every now and then, just like real life, so you stop off at pos donald's and fuel up otherwise stuff happens to you when you fly, dunno what stuff tho, sumin like that.

Adding food, or any fixed cost system into the game is a bad idea.
Adding extra production requirements for ships and modules is a bad idea.
Its great if you want to play a single player trading game, its not great if you are trying to drive a managed multiplayer economy.
Anyway, "farms" exist in the fill up with materials, sit and wait for stuff mechanic, and they are called mining POS's. ---------------------------------------- Thou Shalt "Pew Pew" |

I think anything related to farming and trade goods for trade goods sake has probably been relegated to "Advanced planetary interaction" and is thus some number of years between about 2 and hrm 10 maybe in the future
Anyhow I'd rather large, expensive pos modules whereby you feed in minerals and get out mechanical parts or the likes myself, reduce a little bit of hassle and dependency on empire when managing a pos network, but introduce new strategic concern in the process . ----- It's great being Minmatar, ain't it? I like this idea, but it would be more fun if....
Instead of vegies and animals you make alcoholic drinks.
You grow grapes, oats, hops, barley, yeast, etc. (not sure where you would buy the seeds from) and you ferment it and bottle it to sell.
Consuming one of these drinks would work like a booster (+15% speed / -15% targeting speed) and the strength of the drink could vary by the quality of the ingredients used.
Or instead of acting like a booster it could make the graphics all trippy and mabey make ingame voice coms sound slow-mo or something.
You could name each batch, "Trauts' Ale 42" and so on, to allow the best batches to be known by name.
Now thats an idea i can see CCP putting some real effort into! Expect an emergency patch in a few days to introduce this.

I think it's a great idea. Making the Eve universe as diverse as possible can only be a positive thing. Even if, like myself, you are only interested in the combat, taking part in a environment where there are as many different play styles as possible is exciting. The folks that dis the idea out of hand, just because farming doesn't appeal to them shouldn't be so narrow, (or bloody) minded. Livestock and veggies could be reprocessed into various buffs. very good idea.

Trade, and transport could also be enhanced through this idea. By making different species, or breeds, or end products region specific, it would make the trade lanes busier. This would give the combat players something else to steal, or protect.

ppl come on, pigs in space? WHY? There are perfectly good planets all over this galaxy where farming would work a lot better - as in without the logistical nightmare of feeding your animals in space and all the messy effects zero-G will be having on manure and the sorts.
If you wanna tie market commodities to POS production there are ways that border to normality. For instance maybe have some moons be habitable, their mining produce being various kinds of animals and plants for which certain hub modules would be needed at the POS orbiting the moon.

I think the idea of having farms is great! Giving them a purpose could be done fairly easily by creating more missions for food transport (there are some there). Famine outbreaks, new colonies, things like that. And of course famines on a planetary scale would require HUGE volumes of the stuff. Yes, they probably would not be the most exciting kind of missions, but courier ones rarely are and these would really mean something.

IE ammar issue Surface modules would require slaves, gallente ones drones, caldari ones minmatar and minmatar ones other minmatar. To supply power you could deploy an orbital solar array and deliver power via microwave to a receiver or something.

Curiously enough i find myself looking for astrofarms on this forum to see if they drop anything interesting to add to my collection and i stumble upon this thread.
Farms would be able to add a new profession to the game and as such i think it's really worth thinking about.
Aslong as i have been playing i have wanted to find some use for tradegoods. I have collected alot of that stuff already and made my own lil bioproject. Nice amounts of slaves , exotic dancers and militants and such , all thrown into a container , add some livestock , alcohol , sigarets and drugs and as last ingredient Enriched Uranium , now bring on the mutants. I'd love to see some sort of visual ingame to this.
To the OP : Great idea , keep it up.

Man. if i could farm Llama from a POS... i dont think i would do anything else ever. Also to everybody whinin about zero-G. if they can make gravity to walk around in stations/ships then why cant you make it on a farming module eh? Also Raising Space Llama would make them a new hybrid form of awesomeness able to adapt and live in space. You could have a zero-g bit and a gravity bit. We are always in need for livestock after the exotic dansers got nerfed and got replaced by janitors in some missions.
