Shameless is a great one, but you've got to watch it from series 1.
Another good comedy was Nathan Barley, it was on in 2005 for one series only and took the urine out of "media types".

As much as I love Chris Morris, I thought Nathan Barley was terrible, not funny at all. I hope his next efforts are much better. __________________________________________ "In girum imus nocte, et consumimur igni."

Completely agree- awesome stuff and probably my favourite British comedy. The part where he had real life politicians calling for a *****down on a drug called "cake" was hilarious. I've got the DVDs of both and they still ***** me up whenever I watch them. The follow-up, "Jam" is also funny, but is a little too weird for me. I also like: Peep Show I'm Alan Partridge That Mitchell and Webb Look Man Stroke Woman

nathan barley was one big self-indulgent in-joke about 'media types'. it's actually quite funny if you've ever been unfortunate to be exposed to any.

Odd, I thought I posted on this thread when it came around the first time but it seems not.
I know I love Green Wing but I forgot just how good it is until I checked out some of the links. Utter utter genuis. I got a transatlantic flight on virgin a while back and checkout there inflight entertainments. Series 1 and 2 of green wing kept me laughing for about 8 hours straight. The poor American Lady next to me looked rather worried though. Probably though she'd sat down next to a mental patient, and I'm larger than your average nutter...
Anyway as to the difference between american comdey and brit comedy. American comdey is for the most part about setting up the one liner. UK commedy is more about setting up a situation and then just grinding it in as far as possible. Interestingly Family Guy tends to do this sort of sustained humour as well. See this for example.
A large part of British comedy's richness I think comes from the Pythons, but one should never forget the unhinged genius of Spike Milligan. The farther of Modern British comedy.

There's a few modern classics that no-one has mentioned yet. Maybe they didn't get so much airplay outside Scotland:
Chewin' the fat Still game
and admittedly it's only on once a year, but still:
Only An Excuse
Without a doubt though, the undisputed heavyweight of british comedy is Ronnie Barker, mayherestinpeace. -- Fix Caldari | Fix Rigs |

I've just finished watching both series on DVD, and it's up there with the best comedies ever. Probably because I'm like Vince in RL!
Also another BBC3 classic is Monkey Dust, especially Ivan Dobsky, the Meatsafe Murderer.

I think it has to do with the following...
There is a model standard of what brits "view". SEX for example is a big NONO. For example, mr bean goes ot the beach and there is that blind guy, he changes in the most funny way. Why? Because he doesn't want to flash his stuff (lol). There are countless more examples everywhere. The accent helps alot, as english in britain is supposed to be the "proper" way to speak the launguage not joking about etc. and that it's being used in the most silly ways. Weather in britain sucks too, dunno if that helps in anyway? (lol)
This mixed with dumb people/funny jokes = w1n.
However there are british commedys that SUCK like little britain. I can't stand it, reminds me of US humour (sorry lol).

Agreed. Sketch shows are all a pale reflection of what Monty Python did, and so they'll always be bad in comparison. As for the one in question? Well, they only had one sketch - the carer and the guy in the wheelchair - and that was only funny once. -- Fix Caldari | Fix Rigs |

Little Britain was great for the first two series, then series 3 was total and utter crap. Possibly becasue it was pasteurised for BBC1 and edgy comedies are never any good when they became mainstream.
Likewise, The League Of Gentlemen. 1 & 2 were great, and 3 totally lost it for me.
Harry Enfield's last comedy series on BBC1 was a total tragedy of epic proportions. Someone forgot to tell him to put some jokes in. The comedy equivalent of a footballer's testimonal match. ("Now, take this money, f*ck off and never darken our doors again")
Ricky Gervais is David Brent. Great in The Office, but a one trick pony. It's not clever genius acting. Like Paul Whitehouse propping up Enfield, Ricky Gervais is propped up by Stephen Merchant.
Green Wing - genius, but last series concentrated too much on the Guy / Mac / Caroline / Blonde Bird romance and not enough on the comedy.
Blackadder - two totally different shows. Series 1, then Series 2,3,4 Series 1 is the best for me, but 2,3 & 4 are also great, just a major difference to #1.
Men Behaving Badly - has it's moments. ****e on ITV with Enfield (seeing a them building here?), got better on BBC with Martin Clunes & Neil Morrisey.
Father Ted - not sure if this was mentioned yet. Worth a look.
The Comic Strip Presents - very "hit or miss". The really great ones are Mr. Jolly Lives Next Door, Bad News Tour & More Bad News.

But comedies such as father ted, blackadder etc...just hilarious.

Father Ted - Listen to the crowd..
Everytime i see this clip, makes me laugh my head off. The fact that the guy in the background clearly swears (which they had to avoid as it was pre-watershed i think), dunno how they got away with it, but genius.

although their sketch show was altogether less funny.
Britain does dark humour very well, whilst America tends to export will & grace/everybody loves raymond/friends style light entertainment shows - they're not supposed to be hilarious, just fill a gap in the schedules.
humour is a funny old thing, if you'll pardon the pun, and all very subjective. what was funny 100 years ago would just be vaguely confusing these days. US sitcoms play it safe aiming to appeal to as many people as possible without offending anybody enough to get sued.
