I remember when Monty Phython was on the TV here in the US. It was great. Since then I have seen "Are you being served", Keeping up apprences (sp), Faulty Towers, and more.
My favorite however is The vicar of Dibley.
What I want to know is why is every comedy I see thats from the UK is so funny. Here in the US our comedy just does nothing for me. It seems kind of like immature.
Any way just my own opinion and I am bored now and sleepy.

If you like british comedy try: Blackadder (Historical comedy, u need to appriciate irony to enjoy this one)
Red Dwarf (Sci-Fi, Crazy stories & great characters)
The Young Ones & Bottom (Crude offensive & great)
Farther Ted (I still cant believe they made a programm about 3 preists this funny & offensive)
Some US comedy i like, Cheers, Frasier... But mainly due to the fact is far wittier than most US programs (not to sound offensive but i find most US comedy pretty base ... The kind of humor that involves bringing 2 dates to a meal etc.... )

I think it's because good British humour is based on sarcasm and irony, as opposed to the one liner - canned laughter - one liner - canned laughter thing that most of the sitcoms from over the pond have. That's not to say the US doesn't have some good comedy though, stuff like Frasier's pretty good.
I'll even go as far as saying Friends can be funny... Occasionally... Maybe... [/credibility] ----------- Join channel 'Turby' or die! (bring pie) I <3 carebears on toast ^^ - Xorus I'll trade you some carebears for some sheep -Tirg

It's mostly the accent.
The other day I heard a Scotsman curse someone out and just about died laughing.

UK has loads of crap comedy's, but when we turn out a good one, it is *awesome*. Also, Family Guy is brilliant, despite being American :P It just takes the **** out of absolutely everything as well as having entirely random things in it. (Such as Stewie taking out the Taliban, riding away on his trike through various scenes, including a scene from the original Doom) god i ****ed myself laughing almost.
Police Squad? Got to love Family guy though.
Some other recomendations;
Spaced (I know someone already said it but everyone should watch it)
Monkey Dust - Best uk animation ever tbh. Search for it on youtube if you aren't easily offended.

Brass Eye and The Day Today
You can probably get some of this on Youtube and the radio show he helped write called "On the Hour" is probably about too.
Warning though. Some of it is pretty damn offensive. The Brass Eye special i linked too had politicians, celebrities and newspapers howling for blood. Clever thing being, that was the exact hysterical reaction he was sending up.
Very clever stuff.

I would be intrested to find out how popular Red Dwarf, Blackadder, Im Alan Partridge, Jimmy Carr (Standup shows) are in the USA.
The best US comedy ironically isnt very typically american (Frasier, South Part, Futarama (farr superior to the simpons), Family Guy is good, but lives off the back of the simpons-futarama & southpark.
But i guess the USA does have a great sense of comedy, they did elect George Bush & Arnie........

Quote - "Its a small off duty checkoslovackian traffic warden" (Kryten) - Red Dwarf - "you better stop having these great ideas, or your foot will fall off" - Nursie "does that happen when you have to many good ideas?, your foot falls off?" - Queenie "Yes... My Uncle Bertie had this great idea of cutting toe-nails with a sycthe, and his foot fell off" Nursie - Blackadder II

You sooooo beat me to it. Spaced and Black Books are quite likely my 2 top favourite comedies ever
Green Wing's good, but not quite "awesome" factor. First series was hilarious, but the surreality got a bit old by series 2.
Other good comedies.........Father Ted is one of the best around, and of course Blackadder was a classic (Blackadder The Third was my favourite). Peep Show was excellent, aswell. The Office was great, too.
Anyone ever watch The Mighty Boosh? Thats Bizarre. With a capital B.
I think we Brits have a knack for comedy. Americans have a knack for Drama, the French have a knack for romance, everyone has a knack for something- for Britain, its comedy
Slightly off-topic, try This site out. A few good British comedies (aswell as American ones) are on there. Not even illegal, too -----------------------------------------------

Ingore this man, he's a ponce, it's midly amusing. Jeff says it all.
However, go get some Red Dwarf, Blackadder, Monty Python, Abfab (Cheers Eris, forgot about that one).
British humour is more generally based on wit, irony and sarcasm, which makes for great jokes IF you can get them.

What makes British humour so funny (compared to American I assume)?
Let's see. Not written by committee, much less canned laughter, much less telegraphing (in sitcoms) of the funny one-liner, less reliance on one-liners in general. (One-liners take some real talent.)
There are some funny American stand-up comics, but I have seen many American sitcoms and just about all of them are about as funny as watching paint dry.
Two comparable sitcoms: Married with Children and My Family. I rest my case.

Borat and Ali G are creations of Sacha Baron Cohen, an English guy. Borat and Ali G were both his characters originally on "Da Ali G Show" on UK Channel 4.
It was "The Eleven O'Clock Show" Ali G first appeared on as a 5 minute sketch thing each week before he got his own show.

The Fast Show was great, especially Channel 9 news and the weather reports!
Scotch and Wry is another sketch show which I don't think has been mentioned. Although unlike Chewin The Fat, I don't think the humour in it would travel beyond Scotland. The Traffic Cop, "Right Stirling, oot the car", the Reverend I.M. Jolly and the catholic signing for Rangers Football Club were all classics which probably wouldn't translate very well to other countries.
Should be able to get a few clips off Youtube of various Scotch and Wry sketches |

i think the big reason many American find British humor funny is the differences in language. the British have a completely different way of referring to various actions and bodily functions then Americans do. Likewise a lot of the good American humorist(not the crap on tv) like to play off the differences in ethnic groups (aka mild stereotyping). where as the British having different ethnic groups often times don't get the humor.

Edited by: TheFirstInquisitor on 26/01/2007 18:03:43 Edited by: TheFirstInquisitor on 26/01/2007 17:59:03 Why is British humour so good. First of all, chears for the complement, and secondly, a refference to Bill Bryson`s "Notes from a small Island", there is no american equivelant to the vital British phrase, "taking the pi**". Also, Comedy, Dead Ringers, George W "my fellow pellicans" Bush. The Tony Blair and ******`s parralels on the fall from grace, classic. My personal favorite is Red Dwarf, specificaly the polymorph episode when Rimmer walks in on Kryten and Lister in a "compromising" situation...
EDIT: The filtered name between Blair and Bush is another nast man, specificaly the nasty man from the Second World War.
Note to all, What I say may be infact of a more humorous tone than comes accross. |

I'm going to get oldschool now, mainly because I don't like the curent raft of crap that's being called comedy here in the UK.
Porridge; Open All Hours; Only Fools and Horses (mentioned excessively few times thus far); The Good Life;
Not sitcoms but still highly amusing nonetheless:
Morecombe and Wise; The Two Ronnies; Not The Nine O'Clock News; Monty Pythons Flying Circus;
Actually there's a few imports from the US I quite enjoy. Frasier, King of Queens (mainly because the wifey in that is sooooo fit), and M*A*S*H, and not forgetting the classic Mork and Mindy.
Of course if you really want to make me curl up into a ball and laugh until I go blue, some good old school Tom and Jerry, Roadrunner, or Daffy Duck will do it every time. There's absolutely nothing funnier than cartoon violence or watching that coyote open a box labelled ACME and trying to work out in which way the contents are going to go wrong for him, especially in the way the makers of these portrayed it.

Odd, I thought I posted on this thread when it came around the first time but it seems not.
I know I love Green Wing but I forgot just how good it is until I checked out some of the links. Utter utter genuis. I got a transatlantic flight on virgin a while back and checkout there inflight entertainments. Series 1 and 2 of green wing kept me laughing for about 8 hours straight. The poor American Lady next to me looked rather worried though. Probably though she'd sat down next to a mental patient, and I'm larger than your average nutter...
Anyway as to the difference between american comdey and brit comedy. American comdey is for the most part about setting up the one liner. UK commedy is more about setting up a situation and then just grinding it in as far as possible. Interestingly Family Guy tends to do this sort of sustained humour as well. See this for example.
A large part of British comedy's richness I think comes from the Pythons, but one should never forget the unhinged genius of Spike Milligan. The farther of Modern British comedy.

I think it has to do with the following...
There is a model standard of what brits "view". SEX for example is a big NONO. For example, mr bean goes ot the beach and there is that blind guy, he changes in the most funny way. Why? Because he doesn't want to flash his stuff (lol). There are countless more examples everywhere. The accent helps alot, as english in britain is supposed to be the "proper" way to speak the launguage not joking about etc. and that it's being used in the most silly ways. Weather in britain sucks too, dunno if that helps in anyway? (lol)
This mixed with dumb people/funny jokes = w1n.
However there are british commedys that SUCK like little britain. I can't stand it, reminds me of US humour (sorry lol).

Agreed. Sketch shows are all a pale reflection of what Monty Python did, and so they'll always be bad in comparison. As for the one in question? Well, they only had one sketch - the carer and the guy in the wheelchair - and that was only funny once. -- Fix Caldari | Fix Rigs |

Little Britain was great for the first two series, then series 3 was total and utter crap. Possibly becasue it was pasteurised for BBC1 and edgy comedies are never any good when they became mainstream.
Likewise, The League Of Gentlemen. 1 & 2 were great, and 3 totally lost it for me.
Harry Enfield's last comedy series on BBC1 was a total tragedy of epic proportions. Someone forgot to tell him to put some jokes in. The comedy equivalent of a footballer's testimonal match. ("Now, take this money, f*ck off and never darken our doors again")
Ricky Gervais is David Brent. Great in The Office, but a one trick pony. It's not clever genius acting. Like Paul Whitehouse propping up Enfield, Ricky Gervais is propped up by Stephen Merchant.
Green Wing - genius, but last series concentrated too much on the Guy / Mac / Caroline / Blonde Bird romance and not enough on the comedy.
Blackadder - two totally different shows. Series 1, then Series 2,3,4 Series 1 is the best for me, but 2,3 & 4 are also great, just a major difference to #1.
Men Behaving Badly - has it's moments. ****e on ITV with Enfield (seeing a them building here?), got better on BBC with Martin Clunes & Neil Morrisey.
Father Ted - not sure if this was mentioned yet. Worth a look.
The Comic Strip Presents - very "hit or miss". The really great ones are Mr. Jolly Lives Next Door, Bad News Tour & More Bad News.

Britain does dark humour very well, whilst America tends to export will & grace/everybody loves raymond/friends style light entertainment shows - they're not supposed to be hilarious, just fill a gap in the schedules.
humour is a funny old thing, if you'll pardon the pun, and all very subjective. what was funny 100 years ago would just be vaguely confusing these days. US sitcoms play it safe aiming to appeal to as many people as possible without offending anybody enough to get sued.

RIP Bernard Manning (best comedian ever) now theres a guy that you should all watch as well as roy chubby brown, he was apparently racist but absolutely hilarious and he isnt offensive at all as he takes the **** outta everyone including himslef from time to time --------------------------------------------- no sig for you !!! |

I f*****g hate the bastage!
American sitcoms nowadays seem to revolve around a good looking wife and her obese/bumbling/idiotic/******** husband, for instance 'King of Queens', 'Everybody Love Raymond'... Try 'Third Rock From The Sun' or 'Wonder Showzen' or House' for some decent American comedy, other then that, it all sucks.

Hmm - good to know racism is ok so long as they're racist about everybody I saw the film following Chubby Brown and thought the filmmaker was spot on - a lot of his stuff is very funny and he's a talented comedy actor but it was clear that while people were laughing at his self deprecating jokes they were just cheering at his racist stuff. It kind of suggested that the latter wasn't appealing to his audience's sense of humour but to their prejudice, which doesn't make for good comedy in my book.

Edited by: Camilo Cienfuegos on 20/06/2007 11:40:17 Edited by: Camilo Cienfuegos on 20/06/2007 11:39:28 Roy Chubby Brown's particular form of derisive satire can get a little much sometimes. Whilst I don't think he's actually prejudiced, he certainly does cross the line of what can be considered good taste, and long since passed anything resembling political correctness. I also don't really find him particularly funny.

Umm, surely if you're prejudiced towards all races it's the same as being prejudiced towards none? Wouldn't it just make him "speciest" or some ****? -- Fix Caldari | Fix Rigs |

Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer are also very fuuny. I've been watching the 'Bang Bang it's Reeves and Mortimer' and I can't stop laughing. It's very surreal, random humour, but its brilliant I think.
I also thought that the first series of little britain was actually quite funny, but from then on it went down hill, with all the same jokes just being repeated in every show.

Self deprecating humour, can't get enough of it. The American comedy that makes it's way over this side of the pond tends to be severely lacking in this, and Hicks was a breath of fresh air.

Took me a while to find it, but the one thing I can appreciate about Bernard Manning as a comedian was that he gave John Thompson the chance to create this character Bernard Righton
