fear not, you're not close to heart attack due to coffee'n'cigarettes (well maybe you are but this has nothing to with it) nor did sweet beverages nibble on your bones
it's a nerve thing in your elbow. EVE doesn't make you use it much; if you find yourself with your head on your hand, stop immediately! if you already got it, hurry to a neuro-doc, he'll eletrocute the area to check how bad it got (cool, eh?)
oh and ccp? get our left hands to do something besides F1-F4/F8 - our nerves depend on it - literally

Maybe use yer left hand so once in a while for, err you know some special physical exercise with a happy ending, with the added effect that its almost as if someone else is doing it, that is if you are right handed.

Hmm, my right middle finger often goes numb, and I'm right-handed so that hand gets a lot of use.
Should I worry?

Oh dear, this is bad. A classic case of the sweet beverages nibbling on your bones. I'm afraid you'll have to cut it off, you'll have to use your left hand to flip people off now.

What you're describing is due to compression of the ulnar nerve. It's usually not serious if the compression lasts for only a short period of time. Normally, you see people who have driven over long distances with this condition as resting the left elbow on the car armrest tends to put pressure on the medial epicondyle of your elbow.
The ulnar nerve supplies the outer aspect of your hand including, your fourth finger, so if you feel any numbness in this area I'd suggest taking a break or changing the position of your elbow.
If your middle or ring finger begin to feel numb, then it may be due to carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). CTS usually occurs over a longer period of time of repetitive motions with your hands and fingers. Typists, guitar players, computer users, ect. are the more typical groups of people who suffer from this disorder. It is secondary to a compression of the median nerve, which travels carpal tunnel. This condition can be quite difficult to treat and very disabling. Best thing to do is to avoid repetitive stress by taking periodic breaks.

So a left-handed Dev does exist, thats so great. I'm also left handed, and I have no problems, with my left hand, or my right for that matter. Everyone is born right handed, only the great over come it.

On a more serious note, ergonomic keyboards, mice or trackballs, proper posture, monitor height and a range of other avenues must be looked at to prevent health issues related to multiple hours spent in front of the computer. If you feel pain while playing or surfing the net, ask your doctor about it.
I asked my doctor, he said RSI is a myth hahaha... anyway, you need those Microsoft natural keyboards, they saved my hands. Get a mouse that FITS YOUR HAND. Will stop the aches and cramps in your hands, and don't bash the keyboard!
Adjust the keyboard to the right high so your forearms are level. Make sure you're not looking down at your screen and it is at the right height for your head. -=====-

Things to do with your LEFT hand while using your RIGHT one to control the mouse in EVE:
- F1, F2, F3, ... - hold left ctrl with left pinky, right mouse click to target - chat in local / corp / alliance once in a while - scratch your head, pick your nose, stuff like that... BUT DO NOT rest your head/cheek/chin on the palm of your left hand
Should cause your left hand to "travel" quite a bit of distance, with plenty of elbow/shoulder movement. ___

I wake up every morning with the left side of my left hand numb. I went to the Doc and it was traced to my spine. I have scoliosis (sp). Of course I am 61 and I guess I am on my way to falling apart.

Edited by: Awox on 10/01/2007 03:33:19 Sometimes the left hand can be used to compliment certain material that might be displayed on another screen. I hope this tip helps.
Edit, for clarification: Sometimes I click along to music videos, or slap me thigh because I am laughing so hard at a comedy video. You are all sick in the head.
