In SWG there was no local it was called spatial. I was an overt rebel (overt meaning I can be shot at by enemy imperials)
Instead we had a little radar circle in the left hand corner that would show friendlies as purple, Neutrals/Covert Imperials as blue (smurfs), and Overt Imperials as Red circles.
It worked fine especially when I would go on suicide runs in enemy territory (pre jedi) it got a substantially more difficult when Jedi were immune to my damage(Master Rifleman) and could kill me while running at mach 5

Well, I guess local could be replaced with a radar, but then you would not only know the amount of people in the system, you would also know their location. And people already think local gives too much info. :)
Unless you make it kind of short ranged, but then we have the debate what a decent range is...

Radar would make cloak ganking more intersting though
Maybe a sustained radar pulse system to detect incomming ships.
It would require a skill to increase the pulse rate but at lvl 1 It takes 1 minute to get feedback from a pulse and at lvl 5 it will take 40 seconds or something like that Best Dressed Corp of 2006 and 2007! -Marcus TheMartin

this went waaaaay off topic. Now back to more local throughout history.
Paul Revere wouldn't be in the history books simply because thanks to local the americans allready knew that the British were comming.
Harriet Tubman would've been caught by slave hunters because "Masa" noticed that local was down 1
Pearl Harbor would've been a failed attack as the naval base attendants would've logged.

scanner and scan probes as they are now with their limitations should be your only means of finding weather other ships are in system, the only way I can think of a player entering forced local chat is when he docks because the docking officials anounce it to the entire system
People whine about cover-ops ships left cloacked for ever in some system and there is nothing that can be done about it. the fact is you shouldn't even know there is one out there! Is that lame local chat window. May be MSN is so powerfull in the future that in EVE every one gets signed on by force.
Local as a means of determining who is in a system is probably the worst feature of EVE.

CCP should make it so you dont appear in local unless you talk. Also they should seed a new module, or even a missile/ammo type that tags targets. Basically have people guard the gates, lock, shoot - when hit target appears in local. That'd be fair in my opinion since alert players have a way to protect themselves provided they play together, which is how it should be.

Local as a means of determining who is in a system is probably the worst feature of EVE.
Weirda always thought that all the people who work in those gate is who announce "arrival" to system. That would be one HELL of energy jump in system whenever that thing fire anyways.
Local is double edge sword. would be nice that it don't provide all that intel, but at the same time - there is social aspect to game that would be lost. granted that aspect already lost to most people after they in eve for little while (replaced by corp/alliance/friends)... some of initial friend in game (down in lowsec) would have never been met/made had there been no local. __ Weirda Join QotSA |

Uhh the game would pretty much die in 0.0 without local. You wouldn't be able to find targets. You wouldn't ever get a fair fight and small gangs would be dead. PVP would turn into slow moving gank squads to kill anything before the backup warps in.
Supposedly the scanner would be enough intel when you're mining/npcing/moving around, however, You can't scan the entire system so people in uber safes are truly untouchable. People with cloaks are untouchable (you don't know there's anyone actually there) and with the un-piloted ship clutter in most 0.0 hubs, you don't know who's truly out there.

if in a real ship, you had your ship's scanner going, it would see the other ships, and display a list, and give you the option of communicating with these ships... ...wait. that sounds like local chat.
do aircraft talk to the ground to get updates on thier and other plane's positions? yes. do they talk to eachother. yes.
to soldiers communicate to one another. yes. can these communications be intercepted. yes.

Pirating would be lame if you had to scan every single system you come across from top to bottom only to find nothing inside.
Local is perfectly legit... when you use a stargate, it keeps track of who came in.
Also, you htink logoff tactics suck ass now? Just wait until there is no local... then you will spend 10 minutes saying "crap where is his next ss, i thought we had him! Oh... he logged 10 minutes ago." How the heck is that any kind of fun? Local is not realistic, but neither are turrets that have to 'track' stationary targets and max speeds in a frictionless environment.
Removing local would promote logoffs, a tactic you all seem to complain about quite a bit.

If local existed in real life...
... the US would have won in 'Nam! ... WW1 and ultimately WW2 would have been avoided because the assassins were spotted in local and the Archduke Franz-Ferdinand loggofskied. ... 9/11 would never have happened! ... etc.

Sounds to me like a combo of local and Overview. Local that has system wide range, and Overview that shows a list of ships.

Good stuff
The game is not yet ready to get rid of local, other stuff must be added first. but I think it needs to be done. If I jump into system in a fast ship, immediately warp to a belt despite UI lag, and magically knew which belt to warp to, I cannot get there before a battleship warps out. All he has to do is keep an eye on local.
despite this, last night, 5 out of 6 people logged immediately upon my entry. I found the belt one logged from, and sat there, they logged in, then logged out before they warped back to the belt, so never came back, and now never will.
One way or another, something needs to be fixed.

Thats because Chuck Norris always spawns on top of you (he can blow up your ship and pod before the system even realizes he jumped in (that would be of course if he even needed to jump in and if the system could even comprehend the existence of chuck norris)) Best Dressed Corp of 2006 and 2007! -Marcus TheMartin

If local was added to real life TomB would be convicted of rape. No longer would his tactic of simply proclaiming it was "suprise sex" would work.
Eve would cease to exist without TomB's leet Dev ability.
Local is, therefore, bad.

I'm not gonna read this entire topic, I'm just gonna state my opinion (yet again) on this topic. This isn't medieval times, the technology present is miles and miles ahead of even our times, not to speak of the trojans or ww2. If you want to compare it to something take this: Everyone in a system is linked to the stargates in a network, when someone jumps trough you get added to a list (local) by the stargate you jumped into. Remember the stargate de-moleculesizes you in order to send you trough, so there's nothing you can hide about your identity, it can seek out your DNA if it wanted to. The stargate network is not owned by players, and it's not owned by you. Deal with it, local stays how it is -

Sir Francis Drake would never had as many ship kills as all the Spanish would have logged when he entered.
Ollie North would been exposed waaay earlier as he entered into Iran local.
Noriega* would have logged when US Marines landed in Panama.
The Golden Horde would jump local to 10,000 and everyone in the system would run and hide afraid to come out and fight.
James Bond would never be able to sneak into Spectre's secret bases.
quite funny really.

Without local, travelling in space would be like wearing a blindfold in the middle of a war zone...
Ship sensors (scanning) are suposed to be your eyes in space, not some chat window. its lame and you know it
if in a real ship, you had your ship's scanner going, it would see the other ships, and display a list, and give you the option of communicating with these ships... ...wait. that sounds like local chat.
do aircraft talk to the ground to get updates on thier and other plane's positions? yes. do they talk to eachother. yes.
to soldiers communicate to one another. yes. can these communications be intercepted. yes.
local represents these things. it would make no sense if you couldn't talk to anyone.
Local has no limitations, scanners do. The power of local is lame, try and justify it all you want but it is a lame means to get instant intel on every pilot on a system. by far the worst feature of EVE IMHO
