Why all the flames? AU offers new (and old) pilots a way to get basic fleet maneuvers, small ship fittings, and basic combat tactics experience for a relatively cheap price.
And yeah-the smart-bombing domi/whatever melts pretty quick under fire from 10-15 destroyers when they combine effective EW and firepower. Sure a couple of DD's might go bang--but what is that in comparison to killing a BB?
As for the courses themselves (I have been through both Basic and Wolfpacks) players will learn quite a bit-especially in the destroyer section. To be fair the initial couple of hours are not much fun and contain quite a bit of fluff (the turret tracking mathmatics-while useful to know-does not require lengthy explaination). There are also a LOT of immature pilots who show up without ships/fittings/TS-VENT and waste a ridiculous amount of time during the classes (again-less so during Wolfpacks course).
If you are going to attend: 1-Be early 2-Be prepared 3-Read the frigging course materials in advance 4-Have a lot of patience while 90% of the class ignores items 1-3. 5-Be prepared to hear a lot of "ftw" "leet-speak"..seriously guys it's really irritating. 6-Plan up to 7 hours or more for the whole thing (including actual ops).
I have made some mildly negative comments here-and I don't agree with AU's overall Quake-like style (killing all with no real purpose beyond killing)...but the experience and knowledge gained will serve any pilot quite well whether empire carebear or Alliance warrior. And it also breaks the mindset of "bigger is better". And-like them or not-Rells and company are fine FC's and target callers.
I endorse this product/service with the caveats mentioned above
Regards from a satisfied graduate.

p.s. I would strongly advise non-combatants to avoid the ops area during known "school nights"

It is not just about destroyers mate. It serves as an introduction to fleet ops under quality FC's in an environment where mistakes are expected and forgiven...unlike alliance ops where there may be no room for error. But then again...how would you know? Let me say it again as you obviously have NOT taken the course-AU is NOT about solo ships. Take the course and then you might be qualified to comment/flame/boast of your awesome combat prowess
To be fair i've seen how ******* awesome a dessie pack can be. But they perform no better than their price tag really. A Rupture fleet fitted with the same costs could take them out.
Comparing apples to caviar. DD's cost peanuts versus minimum couple million per Rupture....although a gank fleet of nano'd Ruptures would be fun too

First....if this is your main I apologize for my earlier comment. I had you confused with another member of your corp who seems to comment frequently elsewhere.
Second-you are totally missing the point of taking an AU course. In all fairness I should clarify that the course demonstrates effective combat teamwork that applies to both large scale fleet-type ops AND small gangs.
Of course fittings affect outcomes to a certain extent-but co-ordinated and balanced EW fittings within a gang are devastating to an opponent.
Not all corps/alliances teach combat basics. I am sure there are many who tell a new recruit "chuck on web/scram-orbit at 1000" and thats the extent of it. I think there is a reason that during the two courses I took quite a few pilots were there as part of mandatory training-and with good reason.
The lessons learned apply even to you-the small time low-sec belt pirate. Even more important-it gives the objects of your attention the means to fight back effectively and with confidence at little cost
And with regard to this particular statement:
Furthermore, what kind of self-respecting "school" would not teach people how to pvp solo? 80% of the pvp that occurs in empire are 1v1 encounters.
Pardon me for this but... Cough...choke....
You would-of course-be referring to either suicide alt-bombing in Jita or jumping some poor ratter/miner who is busy tanking rats while going about thier business. Not to mention the Privateer alt-gank squads etc. I'll stop now as my sides are hurting from laughing.
Free fun combat tip for you lo-sec miners/ratters who want to get some payback-The "Q" ship:
Set up a hauler/rat cruiser with a nice tank, sensor boosters, and a webber/warp scram. Pretend to jet mine or rat or autopilot to a gate while a few of your pals sit nearby in a safe spot. When one of the dreaded lo-sec pirates warps in--lock him up, scram him and call in the gank squad....lather rinse and repeat as needed and enjoy the complaining in local about how you don't fight fair. Pirates cannot resist an easy target--even the real nasty 0.0 pirates fall for this one on a regular basis
Oh--and for those newer folks I believe the AU folks will help you rat local to thier ops area in order to build the needed funds to take the class.

Corrected for accuracy
If I didn't think it would get nuked I would post the links to the after action results from both classes that I took. The Vexor jack is probably not the best example but makes for fun viewing.
Kills from the Basic class I attended (23 students I think):
Victim: xxxxx Alliance: NONE Corp: xxxxx Destroyed: Tempest System: MHC-R3 Security: 0.0
Victim: xxxxx Alliance: xxxxx Corp: xxxxx Destroyed: Vexor System: PF-346 Security: 0.0
Victim: xxxxx Alliance: xxxxx Corp: xxxxx Destroyed: Ferox System: F67E-Q Security: 0.0
Victim: xxxxx Alliance: NONE Corp: xxxxx Destroyed: Rupture System: MHC-R3 Security: 0.0
Victim: xxxxx Alliance: xxxxx Corp: xxxxx Destroyed: Iteron Mark II System: MHC-R3 Security: 0.0
And here's the good one from the Wolfpack course one week later (19 students):
Victim: xxxxx Alliance: NONE Corp: xxxxx Destroyed: Hawk System: B-VIP9 Security: 0.0
Victim: xxxxx Alliance: NONE Corp: xxxxx Destroyed: Raven System: B-VIP9 Security: 0.0
Victim: xxxxx Alliance: xxxxx Corp: xxxxx Destroyed: Cyclone System: B-VIP9 Security: 0.0
Victim: xxxxx Alliance: NONE Corp: xxxxx Destroyed: Rifter System: B-VIP9 Security: 0.0
Victim: xxxxx Alliance: xxxxx Corp: xxxxx Destroyed: Maulus System: B-VIP9 Security: 0.0
Victim: xxxxx Alliance: xxxxx Corp: xxxxx Destroyed: Eris System: E02-IK Security: 0.0
Victim: xxxxx Alliance: xxxxx Corp: xxxxx Destroyed: Ferox System: 7Q-8Z2 Security: 0.0
And the laugher--smart bomb BB:
Victim: xxxxx Alliance: xxxxx Corp: xxxxx Destroyed: Scorpion System: SL-YBS Security: 0.0
I think the results speak for themselves. The Wolfpack course was especially entertaining as the majority of those kills came during a large swirling furball (centered on the Raven) as opposed to single-ship kills. And the Scorpion pilot thought he would be clever and smart bomb-too bad one pilot in the AU gang had a ship scanner on board enabling the rest of us to orbit safely outside SB range and punk him
Again--for all you small/new corps...ignore the clueless and go for it. I would also recommend this to any alliance looking to get thier miners/production types a bit of trigger time/experience so they can contribute properly when needed.
I was not paid for this product endorsement...you are welcome AU

Further line-by-line pointless uninformed dissections...

1-I am not and never have been affiliated with AU beyond taking two of thier advertised courses.
2-The reason myself (and others) take them is to learn something new. As a brief example-right after completing the first course one of my former corp-mates was attacked in Tash-Murkon low-sec by a pirate. For the first time in game I felt comfortable organizing and leading a response (5 pilots-1 of whom acted as bait...various fast ships) resulting in the destruction of the pirate's Thorax and a "well-played" in local from same. I have to wonder if one of the small mining corps you prey upon has taken this course and ganked you in a similar fashion to cause this much hostility on your part towards an in-game school who's courses you have NOT taken.
Further to that-when I made the move to UKC/LV I was ready and comfortable in my ability to instantly contribute to operations having been taught the basics and built upon them from there.
3-Alliance combat operations run the gamut from solo/small gangs right up to the POS war fleets. But you would have no knowledge of that being a small time pirate type. Not that there is anything wrong with that..pirating is just as viable an EvE profession as anything else.
4-Solo combat in EvE is a suckers game (generally speaking). As I have stated elsewhere-if I want to fly realistic one-v-one scenarios I'll boot up IL-2 or Falcon-IV where "true" ACM is a viable option.
5-You sir-are a troll and nothing more. And a rather boring one at that. I will leave it there as AU are more than capable of defending themselves both on the forums and in-game.
Regards

Edited by: RuleoftheBone on 19/01/2007 09:33:00 Just out of curiosity are there any plans for an Interceptor course? And I presume the covops classes are being run from time-to-time?

If my attack is irrelevant, why is it that you continue, far after I let this argument die, to explain your way out of my critique?
-Karlemgne
Most folks "critique" what they have personally experienced. Your commentary/arguements have no validity as you have not attended an AU course and as such-remain boring and irrelevant.
