Having read the boards, it is evident there are a lot of WOW players that have traversed the divide to EVE, evidenced by their names. Just wanted in this post to see who can claim the title of "My name looks out of place in space" award:
Things like "Goblinsmacker Elfblade" and "Ogreman Goresplatter" are what I am talking about...

A few decades ago a Gallente media corp distributed a documentary about ancient earth, including a chapter about popular hobbies of the time. As a merchandising tie-in another branch of that corp sold a PortableCluster version of WoW that became very popular for a few months.
After that it was all the fashion to give babies names from those ancient days used in that old game.
Don't forget that in an age with uncounted tens of billions of humans and parents trying to find individual names that aren't already used by hundreds of millions they get ever more desperate for inspiration.

I made an unfortunate typo mistake when I created this character and didn't notice until after I had plugged in some implants that a friend gave me so I didn't want to reroll...
People keep taking the p.iss now
It's almost as bad as when I created my character on the WoW RP server with a wonderful mass of ginger facial hair in traditional dwarf style... and then called him Red Bread by accident
Everywhere I went people insisted on pointing out the mistake...
'Oi Red... don'tcha know how to spell Beard' - was what I heard all the time was very demeaning and am getting same reaction here with Gaint

A basic form of cricket can be traced back to the 13th century, but it may have existed even earlier than that. The game seems to have originated among children of the farming and metalworking communities in the Weald between Kent and Sussex. Written evidence exists of a game known as creag being played by Prince Edward, the son of Edward I (Longshanks), at Newenden, Kent in 1300.
In 1598, a court case referred to a sport called kreckett being played at the Royal Grammar School, Guildford around 1550. The Oxford English Dictionary gives this as the first recorded instance of cricket in the English language.
A number of words are thought to be possible sources for the term cricket. The name may derive from a term for the cricket bat: old French criquet (meaning a kind of club) or Flemish krick(e) (meaning a stick) or in Old English crycc (meaning a crutch or staff). (The latter is problematic, since Old English 'cc' was palatal in pronunciation in the south and the west midlands, roughly ch, which is how crycc leads to crych and thence crutch; the 'k' sound would be possible in the north, however.) Alternatively, the French criquet apparently derives from the Flemish word krickstoel, which is a long low stool on which one kneels in church and which resembles the long low wicket with two stumps used in early cricket.
During the 17th century, numerous references indicate the growth of cricket in the south-east of England. By the end of the century, it had become an organised activity being played for high stakes and it is likely that the first professionals appeared in that period. We know that a great cricket match with eleven players a side was played for high stakes in Sussex in 1697 and this is the earliest reference we have to cricket in terms of such importance.
The game underwent major development in the 18th Century and had become the national sport of England by the end of the century. Betting played a major part in that development and rich patrons began forming their own "select XIs". Cricket was prominent in London as early as 1707 and large crowds flocked to matches on the Artillery Ground in Finsbury. The Hambledon Club was founded in the 1760s but its team was already playing first-class matches in 1756. For the next 20 years until the formation of MCC and the opening of Lord's in 1787, Hambledon was the game's greatest club and its focal point. MCC quickly became the sport's premier club and the custodian of the Laws of Cricket.
The 19th Century saw underarm replaced by first roundarm and then overarm bowling. Both developments were accompanied by major controversy. The concept of a "champion county" arose in the 1820s and then, starting with Sussex CCC in 1839, county clubs were founded and these ultimately formed a County Championship.
In 1859, a team of England players went on the first overseas tour (to North America) and 18 years later another England team took part in the first-ever Test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground against Australia.
The legendary W G Grace started his long career in 1864. It can fairly be said that he revolutionised the sport and did much to ensure its massive popularity.
The last two decades before the First World War have been called the "Golden Age of Cricket". It is almost certainly a nostalgic idea based on the sense of loss brought about by the war, but even so the period did produce some great players and memorable matches, especially as organised competition at county and Test level developed.
The inter-war years were dominated by one player: Don Bradman, statistically the greatest batsman of all time. It was the determination of the England team to overcome his incredible skill that brought about the infamous Bodyline series in 1932/33.
Cricket entered an epochal era in 1963, when English counties modified the rules to provide a variant match form that produced a certain result: games with a restricted number of overs per side. This gained widespread popularity

Lost Ninja was best I could come up with :D

Quite right Ethereal (may i call you Etheral? I know it's rather presumptious but one rarely encounters someone who is so obviously destined for greatness as you are.) A sexy elf name would attract entirely the wrong kind of attention from these space geeks. While your chosen name conjures just the right amount of enchanting ennui and poetic mystery.

I spent ages thinking about what a really good space name would be, my high school physics lessons came to mind and RedShift yes, thta would be great, its spacey, and kinda means im moving fast, and a bit hard to see.
Well damn somebody was already redshift so i had to put these numbers in my name! now i didnt realise there was a stigma to it at the time, but if i had it to do over i would have gone with RedShift as a surname, like "Lightning RedShift" or something... ______________________________________

Edited by: Acinonyx Jubatus on 12/01/2007 03:28:57 I was scraping for a name when I came up with mine...
I was sitting here, thinking eve was full of mature people that liked "eve-esque" or something names, like, realisticy. (Boy was I wrong on some people) Anyways, I sat here, staring at my character creation screen for several minutes unable to think of anything, then it hit me.
:o Went with the scientific name of my favorite animal, seems to work fairly well at being "original" and fitting in without being too much of a hassle to make.
Also, I seem to **** a fair bit of people off when it comes to saying my first name all the time.
Edit: lol typos...

My name.... well... the X's I only added because someone else took the original... (DAMN YOU!!!!)
Anyway, i've used Vulkan in many games back to when I played my first online game (rainbow six) and I like it. It even translates to Edge in German!
Though I must admit now, I wish I never put the damn X's on their... it just degrades it, I didnt know you could put a space in your name to put a surname in EVE until later, and since you can't change your name, and my character is over a year old now, i'm not re-rolling.
The star trek puns are annoying because at the time I thought of it (didnt know it existed at the time, and I didnt know about those damn Vulcans from star trek either!) I thought it was completely original... Oh well, atleast I can pretend the X's are just my surname, a surname that starts with X and ends with x.... yes....
As for using it in WoW, well, I only ever signed up for the trial, and pretty much dropped it there, I forget what name I even chose

they dont necessarily have to be WoW names,
some of ppl might have been playing RPGs such as Warhammer or D&D, they might have played MUDs, or they just might have been fans of sci-fi and fantasy books... why do some ppl associate fantasy with WoW ?

Beats me. That game is so banal once you get into the raid game that I could never associate it with anything that involves an imagination. I saw many of my friends and guildmates get sucked into the raid game, never to return. ___________________________________

It also has its other advantages for a character beginning with "A" (which is always bad news when enemies sort alphabetically)

Actually, anything with a red shift is moving away from you. So basically, you're fleeing from everyone at the speed of light. pwnt!

Edited by: Copperjet on 12/01/2007 11:09:26 Copper jet - is what is formed when a particular type of munition strikes armour. Kinda liked that idea with this character's career path in mind (Caldari Missile user)
It also happened to be my ADSL modem brand, that sits on my desk and gave me inspiration about 2 minutes into the character creation process, where I sat stumped, until seeing it.

At NEAR the speed of light. ;)
My name's a mix of a bastard spelling of Nikolai and blatant tag showing me to be a furry. I've used some version of it since the ******* dawn of TIME. Or at least since Half-Life multiplayer (pre-Steam) ----------------------------

I know a channel in Eve-Online that has furries in it. Eve-mail me or reply and I'll send you a note on how to get to it. Your name looks familiar to me so I don't know if I already told you about it. ___________________
