When everyone who sees they're adjacent to people of the same eyecolor walk off, is that communication to the two in the middle? Does standing to someone's left count as communication that they have blue eyes? Or does the God instantly signal when they have completed their task?

It just provides the person with the means to determine their own eye colour. Someone asked what happens when the numbers don't work, but the numbers don't matter. All you need to do is stand beside 2 other people and it doesn't matter if those people have stood beside someone else. Although both this and the sorting algorithm depend on there being at least 3 people on the Island! One thing I don't get about the sorting algorithm is that although you end up with green eyes at one end of the line and blue eyes at the other, they don't have a way of telling where the split occurs? Or have I not had enough coffee yet?

Bb and then another he can see they are both blue so he moves into the place occupied by the last blue eyed person on top of the stone. The others have no choice but too move down. BBb Then comes the first green eyed person and not knowing what colour he is stands on the stone. gBBb The next person comes and he is also green eyed. He can see the row of three blues and one green and he moves onto the stone pushing the blues to the right and the green to the left. He still doesn't know what colour he is but knows he has to stand on the stone. gGBBb This continues until the last person steps up. and he is faced with. gGGGGGGGGGGGBBBBBBBBBBb Now this guy steps onto the stone nestling between the green and blue eyed person. However he doesnt know what colour he is. So once everyone is lined up. One of the first colours walks down the line towards the centre stone. He steps between the green and blue eyed person again. So the line looks like. GGGGGGGGGGGgBBBBBBBBBBBb That green eyed person who made the walk back to the centre KNOWS hes green eyed because he was moved to the left. The two groups now split from the stone and the blues commit suicide and there sadistic god is happy. There may well be another [correct] answer to this riddle, but this system works.

Eventually through time there will be no blue eyed babies born. Everyone will be green eyed. A much longer and more greusome process than the before mentioned but it would also work. There would be absolutely no communication throughout this, they would live there lives normally except for the brutal killing of babies that is.

The last person in line goes up the line and cuts in front of blue eyed person who is closest to the front of the line. All people in front of that person will have green eyes and are no longer suspect of being blue eyed. Those passed over are told to leave by the person who cuts behind them. All people in line behind the person who cut in line and the person who cut in line are still suspect. This is repeated until the person who was first cut gets a chance to cut inline himself. None of them are told what to do until after they get to the end of the line and each is told the previous persons directions were different(keeps them from "informing each other what color eyes they have or being informed"). None of them will know that everyone left has blue eyes until after each of them has had a turn because they are facing forward and cannot see each others eyes. (only works if they can talk but not communicate the eye color of the other people) Answer #2 No time limit was given SO the people with blue eyes would be unintentionally ostracized because who would want to form a relationship with someone who was going to have to kill themselves. In the end all the blue eyed people would end up killing themselves because: a) they finally figure it out b) they think everyone hates them so they hate their village back and plan to send them all to hell by committing suicide( vainly thinking that they actually have green eyes). c) they commit suicide because they are chronicly depressed and just want it all to end. How's this one: An islander puts two other islanders, one green-eyed, one blue-eyed next to each other. He doesn't reveal to either what eye colour they have, only that one has green eyes and one has blue eyes. They look at each other and the one who sees green eyes commits suicide. Each person that dies made the last motion causing their suicide. No green eyed people ever are hurt or commit suicide. No one is informed of their eye color to make the decicsion. If done correctly every blue eyed person would never know they were blue eyed because they would die before the realization happend. Green eyed people would figure it out because they were not dead, but this would happen anyway. A varation of this could also be done with high powered sleeping pills and and a poison mixed with high powered sleeping pills where each pill looked the same. They do not plan anything, and a few moments later, every single blue eyed person commit suicide. Suppose you see only one people with blue eyes. Per 5/, there are at least two. So the other one can only be you, and you both commit suicide, gaining heaven for the island. If there are three BE(blue eyed people), one of theme see the two other. If he was GE, he knows the two guys would be in the previous configuration, and should commit suicide. After a while, he sees that the two guys don't do anything. Obviously, they can't deduce their own eye color. The only possibility is that he's BE too. So he suicides. And the two guys are back to previous configuration, and soon suicide too. Now we iterate (gotta love maths) : It resolves itself for N=2 and 3. If there are N BE, one of them see N-1 other. If he was GE, it should be back to case N-1 BE and the N-1 guys should suicide after a while. As they do not, he understand the N-1 guys cannot deduce their own color, so he must be BE too. So suicide and back to N-1. Suiciding gives away some information to the other BE guys, but I hope their god will be cool about it. Of course, without any communication, a lone BE is screwed, and they all go to Hell.

This one looks quite solid, but when i start to think about it, the last person to enter the line has no way to determine his own eye-color. The line with n-1 people looks like this: B....BBBBBB\|GGGGGG....G Now along comes the nth person, named X, who does not know his own eye color. He takes his place in the line, and so both the persons to the left and to right of him know what eye color they have, and indeed the blue group, aside from X, should he have blue eyes, can be confident in the fact that they have blue eyes and kill themselves. Now there's this left: XGGGGGG....G How to determine what eye color X has. Basically, if all n persons have formed a line, and the certainly blue ones have killed themselves, then if a person stands between two persons that do not have the same eye color, he has to walk away, or do some silly dance. X will now know what eye color he has. If no one walks away or does the silly dance, he has a green eye color and when someone (being the person next to him) does, he knows he has blue eyes and will have to kill himself. --------------------------------------------

As there is no communication untill after the person attempts to kill themself. Just to further it make the death instantanious so that the blue-eyed person doesn't have time to think, meaning a gun or other device that can kill instantly. The sleeping pills wouldn't really be susicide because they don't know if there actions will kill them or not just that the will go to sleep and if they wake up then they don't have blue eyes.
