It is all a cruel joke.
1) This is impossible to solve without any communication. In the sorting solutions, when you go and stand between two people you tell them they have a different color of eyes, which is obviously communication (because in order for this to work they would all have to know this solution and thus understand the meaning of this act).
2) In order to go to heaven the green eyed ones would eventually have to die. At which point their god will laugh his ass off and send them to hell for dying.

Everyone gets a cup of water/wine/beer/whatever and a vial of poison. Each villager decides who they are going to give to and goes off and either spikes the drink if the person they are offering it to is blue-eyed or throw the poison away if it is a green-eyed person. Repeat until all blue-eyed villagers are dead.
If there are an even number of villagers, pairing would guarantee completion in one pass. For an odd number of villagers, pairing would guarantees success in two passes. |

Couple of (needed) additions to the formulation of the problem
"There is at least one blue eyed person"
"On the day a blue eyed person discovers he is blue eyed, he must kill himself at midnight"
(or some other Godly ordained time, given at the announcement of the mass suicide order)
This is rather crucial...

And you can forget about sorting and similar, and its correct that no islanders need to communicate verbal or otherwise with each other to figure this out.

Hypothosis, if there are precisely B blue eyed people, they will commit suicide on the Bth night. Say you are a blue eyed person, then its obvious there are either B or B+1 blue eyed people on the island, depending on the colour of your own eyes (if there are no other blue eyed people you can see, then you must be the only one). If you wake up to see the entire tribe alive on day B+1, then, by inductive hypothosis, you will know you are one of B+1 blue eyed people on the island. Since the other blue eyed people will have came to the same comclusion, all of the B+1 blue eyed people must commit suicide on the B+1st night.
Inductive reasoning proves that for all "n", if there are "n" blue eyed people on the island, they will commit suicide on the nth night. And as for the green eyed people, they will get up on day n+1 and find that n of their tribe has commited suicide, so they will all know they have green eyes and therefore wont commit suicide.
Is that right? I hated inductive reasoning at school... :D

So instead of line, they form a circle.
