Edited by: Ealiom on 12/01/2007 13:45:51 Hey folks ive been busy modelling a Cladari Blackbird for a little project. I'm almost finished with the modelling aspect, but before i disappear into Max i'd like some feadback.
I'll update this post with better images if they are requested. First time user of imageshack so bear with me.
So yeah, any ideas, suggestions critiques post em for me to have a look at.
Cheers folks. View 1 View 2

TBH I never flew a Blackbird, I try to stay away from everything Caldari... but this looks great! Can't really give any crits on the accuracy of the likeness, but I'd instantly recognize it as a Blackbird anyway
Try posting renders from the side/front/top maybe? This perspecitve looks good, but doesn't totally show off the model the way it could. A flatshaded wire-less lit render would probably look pretty good too :)
Now for some textures! :)

It is still being modelled so the image you see is just AutoCAD 2007's conceptual view style. Hence why it looks the way it does.
Don't worry once in Max it will be textured and rendered as per Caldari tastes. Pea greens etc will vanish completely those are for the Gallente ;)
I'm modelling a selection of ships for an animation. That is however if i can finish this one in a way that pleases me.

So with that in mind, it looks pretty damn good imo.

Edited by: Ibrich on 12/01/2007 19:38:56 Your greebling could use use some work... the detail level could be toned down on some of it... on the detail shot it's pretty clear that you went overboard on some of the greebles... try to do more of that with textures.. or increase the detail on the other stuff if you want to go for a hi-poly model. Don't know what you'll be using it for.
You gonna chamfer the edges?
Just read what you'll be using it for.. definetly chamfer some of the most obvious edges for good highlights... and tone down those greebles, textures are your friend.

Great work - I use AutoCAD for a living myself, also do plenty of solid modeling. I've thought about recreating some of the ships, but tbh I'd rather just play lol.
Anyway like I said, very nice - if it's cool, later when you are done with them I wouldn't mind toying around with the drawings. Do a few renders, see how I can make it look. Why there should be a breathalyzer to login to Eve:

AutoCAD? *makes odd noises*
Sure it looks nice and accurate and all but...uhh, please don't try to do anything feasible with it like rendering an animation in some other program. AutoCAD is meant for CAD, not 3D per se.
It does look nice though.

Yeah, there are much better progs to render in, and to do 3D modeling. If you use AutoCAD every day though, it's pretty easy to do solids work and then export it into something else for the rendering. I wouldn't try animations in AutoCAD, that's for sure, but for a static solid model, it works fine. Why there should be a breathalyzer to login to Eve:

very nice start! don't let those 3d snobs get you down. i do game modeling all the time and i use autocad as well as max (and maya, lightwave etc.) when it best suits.
the blackbird is a goofy ship to model, but your added detail and improvisation are making it more interesting to look at.

I'd place my bets on "Max" being 3ds Max.

Yeah but if wants to make it work properly he has to remake all the fine detail...it's just not fun.

the main issue here is how the model will import into max from autocad, and to some extents I agree that it will be a problem controlling exactly how the polys are created, especially if he's trying to maintain a low polycount, but from the looks of it, he's not concerned with polys at all.

The poly count is sitting at around 175,000. I decided to model some fine detail in certain areas and have others 'plated'. Some sections look exposed where as others look armoured and protected. (As per CCP's high res concept art, which is brutally awesome) There would be some close up shots which will be impossible to recreate without adequate geometry, textures along wouldn't cut it.
Originally by: Ibrich You gonna chamfer the edges?
Lol almost all the edges do have chamfers, like 90% of them do. You can't see them from a viewport render of the model though and if they were made any bigger it would detract from the model itself. I take your point about the greebles and i will go back and review them.

Modelled in AutoCAD, textured animated and rendered in 3D Studio Max 9.
I model all mechanical object in autocad ive been using it since there was an autocad modelling solution and i find the reason behind it is simple. Autocad may not have all the functionality of Max but for mechanical shapes and objects its speed and accuracy can't be matched.
I don't know what you mean about having to re-do all the fine details? I have modelled some areas in extremely fine detail, im currently working on the launcher and turret hardpoints. Because i want this for possible close up shots i have modelled right down to a reloading mechanism and tracking mechanics. All of this can be easily textured and animated in max??

I bet you could shave off something like 100 000 of those polygons by removing the NURBS chamfering and doing it manually in 3dsmax later on. In fact I think there's autochamfering shaders available so that you don't need to even create extra polies at all.
Rule of thumb: If it's round in CAD it will be a huge pile of polygons in traditional 3D program.

Good job there arent many round objects ;) Seriously though ive been importing into max periodically to check various section just too make sure it works fine. It does, it's all in the options when importing you can set max to automatically smooth out curves and it does a fine job.
There is indeed some shiny new options to autochamfer but in all honesty i prefer seeing them on my model. The poly count isnt effected that much becuase i have lower poly models saved. i think at present id save 30% of the poly's.
Call me old fashioned but i like to see and physically model each chamfer, some look better at different degrees and sizes than others, i wouldn't like to do that process in max rendering each time to check if it looked the way i wanted.
I expect this model to be 200,000 when im finished and probably 50,000 for the lower poly model.

Is there anyway to convince you to model at least ONE minmatar ship? plz plz? I mean you cant have a Caldari/Amarian party without it being crashed by a matar can you?

are the original models that bad that u donŠt use them? wouldnŠt it be easier to use tri-exporter and simply get the game models instead modeling it all yourself?
