Babylon 5 for Tech with out a doubt.
Jump gates for smaller ships, larger capital ships use their own "Jump Drive" Frieghters running around as the main supply force in the galaxy. Lasers... heavy use of missiles... mass drivers (I'd say Hybrid weapons... the idea is similar... drive a projectile at high speed using magnetic, or something similar, force.) doomsday ships that destroy whole planets.... the list goes on.
Firefly for social and political happenings. -----

Just pick you favorite scifi movie.
Now you watch the boring first couple of hours on the edge of your seat waiting for the best part.
Now your TV shuts off right when the action starts and it wont turn back on, when it finally does, the 700 club or some other crap is on..
That is EVE.

Space: 1999 !!

Star Trek: Enterprise?
Personally, i would say Eve is pretty much unique, but would be a breed of Firefly, Farscape & B5

Looking at the backstory and the various novellas that we'd have the chance to read and digress, the worlds, planets and populations of eve do seem to be set in a whole range of worlds. Pilots often originating from post-industrialist worlds, slavers working in medievil situation using advanced technology to control their slaves.
The worlds of Bladerunner and Blakes7 would make a fitting background for many of the worlds arenas I feel. The dirty corporation nature glimpsed at. As for the space of eve, thats a free-for-all mashup of everything stated, as should it be. Eve seems to draw inspiration from all sci-fi before it. The fleet battles resemble those seen in B5 and DS9 (until people logoffski of course;)) Ships look like BSG, with again B5 being thrown in. Combat doesn't really reflect any sci-fi series, as most of them have some sort of work tactical and leadership demonstrated in fleet performances, this will come to eve eventually.
The other thing that appears to ring true about eve, is as the series progresses the bad guys keep winning over and over what remians to be seen is if the good guys win through in the end, or if they have a blakes 7 ending to eve. Guess we'll find out in 20 years.

Babylon 5 for politics and BSG for aptmosphere.
In my opinion not firefly (cowboys in space != eve ) or farscape (farscape is too organic - though that said, for looks eve probably resembles farscape most - sleek and sexeh) and definately not star wars (too trite) or star trek (too technical).

Take some firefly, and then throw in a huge whack of Battlestar Galactica. Spice it up with a dash of Babylon 5, and serve on a leafy bed of all the big spaceship battles from Star Wars.
Serve with an ice-cold glass of Homeworld. +++ FLA - The hardest thing in EVE is to be the good guys.

Babylon 5 meets Blade Runner.
Who was it that said + jump gates? It's jump gates in B5. And a lot of ships in eve seems to be influenced by the minbari.
The dark corporate run world of Blade Runner is perfect anologie for EVE. The Dog eat Dog of it to.
Best of two worlds imho. Got to love EVE.
