You can do that with medals in player corps, as said above. But it requires player action and input, not automatic game mechanics. In fact, these medals and if corps would use them more and more efficiently, would also be a nice draw for players to join or create player corps.

Achievements are a form of manipulation and nothing else.
The whole purpose of Achievements is to make the Achiever believe he achieved something.
Sorry. ;)
The consequences of this are that the Achiever gets a completely wrong idea about accomploshments. He gets a completely wrong idea about how good he is.
He will compare himself to other people with less achievements ... ... falsely conclude that he can chestbeat about it ... ... and cry like an orphaned kitten next to it's dead kitty mother* when someone rips open his candy rear end for that.
* actually he will rage extremely hard, because he identifies with his achievements, thus taking any reality check like an ass kick personally.
Achievements exist to manipulate people into a fake **** comparison ... ... and only exist exactly for the purpose to make people believe that ... ... the more they do, the better they are.
I doubt this is what CCP wants, because such players only get their asses handed to them pretty fast.
I wrecked this topic.

Exactly.
I'm not talking about lame achievements like "Sat on sofa in Captains Quarters".
We already have those... Opportunities.
I'm talking about things that are more substantial.
And that video makes just the point I was making. Why are games putting these things in? Because players enjoy them, they get a sense of accomplishment. Whether that's a worthy sense or not is irrelevant. They get it. And they like to show off their achievements and compare them to others.
And what else did the video say? People will play the game for hours and hours and hours just to unlock various achievements. It's going to encourage game play, and retention of players. It may even guide players into new activities they might not have otherwise tried, when they see an achievement and set a goal to unlock it. CCP can even use that to steer players toward things they want or need players to do. (Which you may object to, but they do that now, at least try to, and need it done for the sake of engaging players in content).
But as for silly achievements, like 'popped your first asteroid', I'm not advocating for that. But "Popped your 1000th, 10000th, 1 millionth" asteroid. Those are some achievements.

Games are putting this in because of the "everyone wins a trophy" mindset of the current generation of parents. They know their children, and to some extent they themselves, will never really accomplish anything in life, hence the pile of achievements anyone and everyone can accomplish.

The point is that artificial goals do nothing to add actual content to any game. This is even more true for sandbox MMOs where goals are set by the players, not by CCP.

Oh I got the point of the video, and the parts of it you wanted me to latch on to are what I'm saying is irrelevant.
Achievements aren't meant to 'add content' to the game, but to attract and retain players and give them some more defined goals in the game outside of the goals that are created by the sandbox and standard game play.
Still, they do add more content to the game than do better engine looks, better scanning effects, and improved anti-aliasing techniques. Things that I and many other players still greatly appreciate CCP continually working on improving.
And if I had been on here months ago suggesting they improve the look of the engine flame, the very same cabal here that poo-poos ALL these ideas would have had the same hissy fit they always have over suggestions like these. And yet CCP knows these things not only attract new players but are also appreciated by existing players, as evidenced by Fan Fests where such changes are always met with oohs, ahhhs, cheers and clapping. (As opposed to "We're adding 10 m/s to base speed of the Tristan).

Personally, I don't get excited about achievements, but it's true that some people do. A lot of MMORPGs do have achievements and people will spend hours and hours travelling to every zone for the achievement, or run every instance, or whatever...they do like them.
I will admit, one of the things I have struggled with this game in the past is direction. As a new player it is really difficult to figure out what to do and where to go. Even the initial career agents; that's really not easy to figure out for new players.
Achievements could give people a goal or an objective.

I like the idea of being able to look up and make public your stats. Most of the stuff I'm talking about has little more value than a passing "Well, how about that."
Naturally, all of these will be individually able to be set to Public/Private.
Number of AU warped. Number of AU slowboated. Number of gates jumped. Revolutions spun in hangar. How many people have blocked you. How many people have watchlisted you. Your average standing as a contact to others. Pods you've lost. Pods you've lost within 120 seconds of undocking or jumping. Rats blown up. Damsels saved. M3 ore/ice/gas mined/huffed. Times CONCORD has been called on your ass. Times CONCORD has been called to save your ass. Percentage of systems visited. Percentage of systems lost a ship in; lost a pod in; killed a ship in; killed a pod in. Percentage of highsec systems you've had CONCORD called on your ass.
Let's do it!

CCP should never tell people what to do in any way shape or form

btw there already is a bunch of useless achievements in eve and they are annoying as hell.
all achievements ever do is block a portion of your screen and you get nothing out of it at all maybe if you earned an extra day of game time onto your act. for every 5 achievements they would be worth a damn other wise useless waste of system resources that could be better dedicated to reducing the lag in jita and large fleet fights. |

Not a bad idea.
Achievements could be tied to some sort of in-game reward (other than just a badge or title). Perhaps ISK, Aurum, Standing, LP, SKINS, rare modules or implants (for the highest level Achievements), etc..

Your superficial understanding of this is horrible.

There is no point in making people feel like easy, dumb tasks every child can achieve are worth mentioning!

Whether you personally consider the worthy accomplishments of people's time in a game is irrelevant.
The fact of the matter is, many game players like them. And it can help draw players in, engage them, retain them, and even guide them toward activities they might not have otherwise tried.
But.... if you're not interested in a feature you could entirely ignore if you want but would otherwise help keep and bring players into EVE then so be it. CCP on the other hand would probably want to explore this more.

Achievements are there to give people a fake sense of acomplishment. Repetetive and easy tasks, no matter how often, are no achievement.
They exist to make people with low self esteem feel like fhey acomplished something.
You lack understanding about the whole concept. You ask ccp to implement mechanics that are an obvious and direct manipulation attempt, causing even more nonsensical self entitlement.
At least educate yourself about the ideas you are talking about.
This has nothing to do with my personal opinion, contrary to you, who has no knowledge about the matter whatsoever.
There is nothing to add here, CCP wojldn't be that stupid.
The EVE player base still is better than the average modern gamer, who is mostly just a victim of companies that create crappy games based on neuroscience.

No.....completely a no. Giving out ISK, Aurum, Standings, LP, SKINS, modules, and implants for completing things like that makes the whole mission system, and the market completely pointless since everyone would just make characters over and over in order to get the goods as it were. I don't mind subscription bundles or the rare items they hand out for special occasions. But as soon as they start handing out implants, modules etc for doing things in game to get along with a shiny star for participating that ruins the whole game and the point behind it. Steam games that have them are fine since most of them are single or multiplayer games. They do not, and in my opinion should never add achievements to sand box games or MMOs.

Well I think just a badge and/or title is fine, however I don't see the problem with other rewards and incentives. The most valuable rewards would be for the most difficult (and lengthy) to get achievements, and those rewards would only be attainable once per character. (In other words low level unplayed alts are not going to be getting anything).
Many of these rewards would be destructible, so they enter the economy and can just as quickly leave the economy. Standings does you nor the game any harm. ISK isn't a problem, it's handed out all the time via bounties and mission rewards. The same for LP. Aurum, why not? This is a way to get people to buy things from the store and maybe get the bug. SKINS, again these are for high level achievements. It's not like there would be a flood of them.
But yeah, I'd be cool with (as would many players) just getting a badge and maybe a title for completed achievements. But if CCP wanted to even more incentivize players engaging in various activities then the other rewards would help.
