Do you know what A LOT of people like? Achievements.
Tallies, special rewards, recognitions.
It works in a lot of games out there. In Steam, a game that has Steam Achievements is an extra incentive to some players to buy a particular game. And even CCP has decided to get into the gig with the Kill Marks.
Now such things don't necessarily need to be displayable, though it's nice when they are. For instance a game like Lord of the Rings Online has deeds and titles which can be displayed. And often there are varying other rewards.
In EVE the completed achievements would appear in people's character sheet list when they are inspected.
Killed your 10,000th rat? That's an achievement.
Piloted every ship in the game? That's an achievement.
Visited every system in Gallente Space, Amarr Space, in all of New Eden? Achievements.
There could be dozens, even hundreds of such achievements, of varying levels.

Achievements as in Steam Achievements (or any other kind used in modern games) are not compatible with EVE for one, but not exclusively, major reason: Free Intel, in particular to anything that is related to PVP and PVE. Just by looking at your achievements, people could see what kinds of ships you can fly, where you rat the most, which modules you use and so on.
Besides of that, achievements are not a big incentive at all. They are rather a constant nuisance. Not only is it rather pointless to know whether you killed 10k, 100k or 1M NPC of faction x, the onslaught of these achievements in the early days and after a while none at all because it becomes requirements are too high. Especially in the early days, when people don't even know what to do first, constantly popping-up notifications about the 10th or 100ths gate jump or 1k or 2k AU total warp distance are distracting and counter productive.
The achievements that EVE has are killboards and implied achievements like "Having Build our first ship, your first station, your first carrier, your first titan", "Survived a war dec", "Made it through Tama/Rancer/Old Man Star/Amamake alive". There is no need for visible badges, because these are your stories, your memories, your personal milestones that you set yourself and not milestones provided by the game to work through.

I think the Intel value of achievements would be quite low. Nevertheless it could also be something which a player has control over making visible.
And while you may not find them to be an incentive, they are an incentive to a certain percentage of players and potential players who consider them a mark of their progress and something to work toward.
I've mined how much ore? 1 billion m3 !!
I've popped how many asteroids? (An incentive to target those roids with 62 units of ore in them).
You name it, it can probably be made into an achievement that incentivizes some players to get it ticked off, to increase their count, to get to the next level, to get a reward or badge.

I find this idea antithetical to a sandbox.
No one can really tell you what an achievement is in this game, except yourself.
Many of the things some people find as an achievement in this game, others would never want to do. One person's unspeakable act is another's ultimate achievement.

EVE Online is not entirely a sandbox game. Nor should it be.
After implementing an achievement system, they could sandbox it by allowing corporations and alliances to make their own achievements for members.

We have those, they're called medals. If you want achievements, make them yourself and hand them out to your corpmates. (I assume you have some of those and are just using a forum alt, if I'm wrong then you should join a player corp that does this.) |

Not really the same thing.
This would require a mechanic that tracks various in-game events.

But the brilliance of the game is that players themselves govern all of this. Again, I am fully aware that people like and want some sort of momento of fun times had, that much is fine. The present medal system works I think. Even though I am no longer associated with some of my old corps, I still have a few medals from them that I would not stop displaying no matter what. I could see expanding the medal system a little.
Also, EvE is one game where reputation actually matters, and characters are actually...well characters! Your achievements are inscrutable to most clean metrics and measure. How your character fits into the greater picture of New Eden is the only real achievement, and you can't really qualify that easily.

I suppose the same thing would have been said of keeping track of PvP kills and having a way to display those.
The bottom line is, to a certain percentage of players, achievements are fun and something that encourages them to play, and periodically rewards them for playing and doing the things they enjoy (and sometimes things they don't enjoy).
Yeah, they may not be for everyone, and if not you can ignore them. Well that is unless you're the kind of person who hates achievements because you then feel compelled to complete them and hate feeling like you must get them all. Something that's likely an impossible dream for EVE.
Bedsides being the spreadsheet game that EVE is and having much to do with stats and figures, why not have a fun way to keep track of some of those stats.

Achievements have never drawn me to any game. I doubt this will have players flocking to eve like you think.
Far better anyways is that players can sort out their own achievements with the medal system.

Excellent.
Though it doesn't show anything for some reason.
At any rate, seems like CCP is 1/2 way there already, as they are already collecting a lot of the data that can be used for numerous achievements to be earned in game.
So those of you who've already mined your first billion cubic meters of Veldspar can get a leg up on the newbs.

I would think like anything, alerts would be something you can opt out of.
Achievements are not only a draw to some players, but they can also help retain players who are working toward achieving those... achievements.

Here's the thing... the percentage of achievement hunters on steam is insanely small, especially for those that do it for their own enjoyment. The vast majority of this very small minority's of achievement hunters do it specifically to show others what achievements they've accomplished. It's kind of like those that strive to get a 100 on every test they take. There are some that do it because they're perfectionist and have to do it for their own personal enjoyment. Then there are those that love the attention that comes with the achievement of a 100. However, the VAST majority of the people taking that test are just trying to pass the damn thing.
As far as this goes in Eve, there are plenty of measurable milestones within Eve that very much are achievements. Your first KM, your 1000th KM, the KM you got from popping a t3 destroyer with an exhumer, mastery lvl 1 on a ship, mastery lvl 5 on a ship, the ability to fly the ship, max skills in a ship. There's also measurable achievements that you can proudly display to other players, such as the Marauder/Blop/jump freighter to trained so long and gathered a ton of isk for.
In many of these cases, it's more that some random achievement that you got cause you walked 100 miles/flew 100 light years, but it's the knowledge, skill, assets, kills, SP, and many other things that you've gained actually having an effect as opposed to a shiny gold star sticker.
Honestly, some of the achievements I've gotten from games are the most ludicrous things I've ever heard of. I can't remember what game it was, but I literally got an achievement for sitting down...... I put my digital rump in a chair and I got an achievement for it...... If that's the type of thing that gets you warm and fuzzy than I would actually suggest you play Eve, as opposed to not play. I mean, if getting an achievement for making your in game character do exactly what your doing is exiting to you, then I can't imagine how exhilarating it would be for them to get into their first frigate. Hell, imagine how happy that type of person would be to even fully t2 fit their first ship! |

In EVE, you set your own achievements and do not need to rely on the game to give you some statistic or requirement to work towards. You can even receive a badge for your achievements by handing yourself a medal with a nice text (which is basically the achievement that you want). People, who need something like Steam Achievements to work towards something in a game, are unimaginative and not the right type of player that EVE needs. They will not contribute towards the game, they will just do what the game tells them to do and nothing on their own.
