In preparation for the truly massive Citadels coming in Spring 2016 with the EVE: Citadel expansion we need more space in space! As such we saw a change in this fundamental, yet often forgotten, game world mechanic with the December release. The size of the grid has been changed from the standard 250 km to 8000 km.
Please note that in some cases,off-grid bookmarks might become visible on grid.
Further information and details are available in the latest dev blog Grid Sizes & You by Team Game of Drones.

You do realise that the grid size in this devblog ( 8000km ) differs from what you announced in the patchnotes for tomorrows update? ( 7800km ), so which is it? |

7,864,320 m but actually it depends because the grid is composed of multiple boxes of this size

Yes the larger grids mean you can drag bubble people further, but it will be more difficult to line it up properly at that distance.

Time to look at lock and weapon's ranges again.
Maybe move engagement ranges of Medium weapons out a bit, Large weapons out a lot, and X-Large weapons out a whole lot more.
Also maybe adjust min warp range and on-grid probing mechanics.
Among other things....

Great change. Like others may have pointed out, increasing max warp distances should be a great idea for future enhancements. Now that Brain in a box is in place too, are there any plans on increasing the max 250km lock range? There's plenty of ships which can fire their weapons past 250km!

They are still instant undock... just not offgrid. Get in the dramiel/ceptor and follow along the line to get offgrid one.

I'm guessing this may change the nature of safespots as well? Typically making a safespot with say just a can could really only be found by warping around and hoping to drop a bookmark as you passed thru its grid. With Grid sizes larger I imagine this will make hunting down a safespot can a bit easier? |

Will help make up for the changes to (or addition of?) warp acceleration / deceleration, that made it harder (especially when using frigates and cruisers.)

Wow. I honestly did not expect this. There are tons of missions and sites with acceleration gates. I've found that the vast majority of rooms in these sites were apx 10000km away from the previous room. To adjust the distance between all these rooms must have been a very labor intensive task.
Also, yes plz adjust remove the 250km locking range cap.

Is this part of today's 1.11gb update? (Hope folks had time to plan for the download as not all of EVE's players have the best choices for internet connections)
Has this been mass tested? "What could go wrong?" is often answered very harshly by reality, so testing, testing, testing is a good mitigator. |

After today's patch, stumbled upon a funny situation. Was 11000 KM away from the next gate. On the next gate, 3 NPC Frigates + 2 NPC Battleships. Hit Align, and somehow, the rats were able to yellow box me at 11000 KM. Tried to Cloak up, "You cannot Cloak due to being targeted by an enemy!". How can you say 7800 KM yet, you can see rats at 11000 KM. Feels a bit petty I didn't take a screenshot. Probably, in some cases, 7800 km = 11000 km... I don't know... anymore... |

Like I mentioned, testing, testing, testing... locked at 11000km? Not 11km, but 11 thousand km. Wow. |

This is great news. Ever since the changes were made to warp speed back in the day, Interceptors sometimes would land so fast that they would simply appear out of nowhere for a moment before jumping through the gate. Now we will finally get to see them land again. |

This morning, it was on-grid.

I swear to God, I was jumping through some systems, gate to gate, and between 2 systems, the gates are literary 11000 km + some kms. I have an awkward way of scanning, in the systems controlled by my Corp or empty systems. I align towards the gate I want to pass through, launch probes and after the launcher is reloaded, I cloak up, in case, you know, people jump in. There were 3 Sansha's Butcher, frigate size ships + 2 Battleships, 11000km away, and my CovOps cloaking device said "You're not allowed to cloak" because the rats were yellowboxing me... testing, testing, testing what?!? Would've been awesome for BSs to hit me 11000km away :))) that would've been, indeed, something to talk about... |

Volumetrically speaking, increasing the grid edge size from 250 km to 8000 km gets you a grid that's 32,768 times the size of the original. |

Thanks for the info, I am sure nobody at CCP has ever seen the formula to calculate volume in a sphere.. you know, because that has nothing to do with a game about spaceships and all that. |

It's just an interesting technical point. The grids aren't 32 times larger, they're 32*32*32 times larger. Also they're not spheres. |

CCP Nullarbor wrote:Some Q&A...
Actually how big is the grid? Grids are composed of multiple boxes, each box being 7864320m x 7864320m x 7864320m. In some cases you can have viewing distances above 20,000km.
Does this affect fleet warp? Yes, anyone inside these larger grids will be affected by fleet warp.
Does this affect drag bubbles? Yes you can now drag bubble people further away within the larger grids.
Seems to suggest that the box size is NOT the grid size. Rather the grid size will be a multiple of the box size. Is that right? |
