Question for all your carrier pilots, is the Thanatos the only carrier worth flying b/c of the drone damage bonuses? I have Caldari BS 5 and only need 27 days of training to get to a Caldari carrier. However, I am open to waiting longer and just picking up BS 5 of one of the other races instead. So, my question is, should I just train for the Thanatos or is it really not that much better?
I've also heard that the Caldari Carrier is super small for a carrier which makes it look sort of wimpy compared to the others, is that true as well?
Thanks for any information /advice you can provide. Don't want to spend over a billion isk and find out the ship ain't all that great.

Most of the hype for the Thanatos comes from its bonus, however, it looses this bonus when it assigns drones. The rest of the carriers keep their bonuses with assigning drones. The Thanatos only beats the rest when it jumps to the fore-front of the battlefield.

Gal carrier = Best DPS Caldari/Amarr = Best tank Minmatar = Best medic?
If you plan on sitting in a POS and sending out fighters then Gal is the best. If you want to be on the front line the Cald/Amarr. If you want a huge logistics ship then Minnie.
Caldari is really small. It is comparable in size to most BSs...

The Chimera does look very small, It's suposedly a bug though, and it's not a big deal anyway.
Anything about the Thanatos being the only carrier 'worth' flying is complete crap imo, there are good reasons to pick another race of carrier to fly (bar maybe minnie, its bonus is a little redundant atm, but i'm sure it will get a little tweaking in future)
Both the Chimera and the Archon get resistance bonuses to sheild and armor respectivly, this gives them a HUGE advantage tank-wise over the Thanatos (statisticly speaking, the Archon can tank just about twice as well as a Thanatos) and is especially usefull if you plan to field your carrier on the front lines in small to mid scale engagments. Sheild tanks are very good at absorbing massive amounts of DPS over a short time.
True the Thanatos gets a 5% bonus to Fighter damage per level, but i'm not even convinced this has any affect on Fighters assigned to gangmates (other skill based damage modifiers don't) The one other advantage to the Thanatos is it has a much larger drone bay than the other carriers (Thanatos = 20 fighters, Nidhoggur = 18, Archon = 16 Chimera = 16)

The Chimera size is a bug and so is its off-center center point. Both of which have been confirmed from devs that its not intended and will be fixed. You can read the quotes from this 13 page topic on Caldari Carrier.

You should fly whichever carrier can be fulled from the local ice belts, which vary from region to region.

not really. tbh i do wish i had trained gallente bs to 5 instead of amarr and use the thanatos but when u see the tank of the archon you realise why you bought it. it really does tank to the extreme with stupidly high resists for such hp.

Unfortunately, rather than address the slot layout/tanking issues for Minmatar the Devs have simple declared that it makes us "versitile".

Carriers are much of a muchness. Archon and Chimera tank better. Motherships on the other hand, there's a pretty big difference.

For the dps obsessed forum community the choise is clear. Thana is the only one with a damage bonus. But, what are you planning on using it for? Purpose of use always dictates the choise of tools.
Consider what you want to use it for, consider what fuels are best available in your region and then make the desicion... ___ P.S. Post with your main. Mind control and tin hats |

well basically if you're at a pos sending out fighters they're all the same since the thanatos' bonus doesn't apply if fighters are assigned.
If you're going frontline it really depends on if you prefer 25% more dps or 33,3% less dps taken (assuming max skills)
your call
I prefer better tanking tbh

I'd generally go for what I can get fastest since it doesn't matter that much. If I got two choices close to each other I guess I'd choose the better looking though

from what i gather, the chimera has serious cpu fitting issues, so mght want to bear that in mind.
also, the archon rocks as a tank, my alt flies one and the resists are just sweet.

Sorry for taking so long to respond, lost the topic and couldn't find it!
Thanks for all the great replies, it looks like I should probably train for the Archon then since it has a good tank and I will want to employ it in battle (not sit back and never use it like most carrier pilots I know!). Also, I am trained for HAC in a Zealot and have some BS skills in Amarr already so it sort of makes sense to expand my skill set in that direction.
Another side question, anyone know what the insurance costs are for a carrier and if the payout is even close to the price you pay when building from components bought, or straight up buying from market forums?
Thanks, Cerwyn

At least for a thanatos, platinum insurance costs about 250mil for a 840mil or so payout.

Hmm, so insurance not really worth it since you get like 50% payout (400+ mill) by default right?

If you plan to actually fly your carrier anywhere that the Thanatos drone bonus would be applied, you would probably want a Chimera more anyway since Carriers tend to draw fire.

Minmatar Carrier rocks my socks. Corp mate of mine DaMiGe flys ones, you may have seen some of his vids, You do not understand how helpful capital remote reps are! 3000 armor hp in 4 seconds on a nidhoggur, and with the new gang system tapping the 'need armor' is a piece of cake for them to help you out. Yes infod does actually use carriers in our ops.

The bonus isn't that good. It reduces duration, which would be great if you were cycling more than once on the same target, but you aren't. Who needs a rep of 3,000+ armor more than once or twice? Then you have to waste time acquiring a new target, rep him, etc etc. Basically, the Nidhoggur isn't very much better at remote repping than any other carrier.

Alt-post.
Depends on how you fly the 1b isk ship + fittings...they're effective in the right hands.
My corpie flys his thanatos with a solowtfpwnmobile setup, that can get out of most sticky situations with patience and skills...
I'd reccomend
3x Drone control units (12 fighters with lv4 skills) 1x Large Neutralizer (Kills the scramblers/most close range ships) 1x Large smartbomb (Drones/Tacklers = dead)
4x Cap recharger II's or better 1x Sensor Booster II or better (May swap for scrambler but i'd fly with a taranis tbh)
2x capital armor reps 1x Armor Kinetic hardner II 1x Armor Therm hardner II 1x Armor Explosive hardner II 1x Energized adaptive nano II
3x cap recharge rigs.
Should run the tank forever; effective against ganks, and can smartbomb interdictor bubbles down to allow for warp out...will drain 600 cap every 24s over at least 25km (3 heavy nos worth @ dim nos range) and has uber dps with all 12/13 fighters deployed (skill dependant).
Some people may smack the setup, but as with all things, this is a 'starter' setup with costs, full faction fitting is more than reccomended, but hey, some people use them to keep pos's alive, not just killing stuff

Gallente = PvP Offensive Bonus Amarr = PvP Defensive Bonus Caldari = PvP Defensive Bonus Minmatar = Designated hospital waste of space.
Come on CCP Bring the nid in line with The other 3 races, The bonus is unbefitting of the minmatar role, not only that , it Sucks ! remote repping is great, dont get me wrong, but its definately out of whack when compared to the other 3 races bonuses.
Give a Fighter tracking bonus or Sheild Boost amount bonus, or More Strippers per level Bonus, Any Bonus just not a cack handed Doctor Bonus. minmatar Are combat Specialists, the klingons of EvE. Do you really think they care about their wounded.
Please Sort the Minmatar Carrier/Mothership Bonus out.

The main thing the thanatos has going for it, other than its bonus, is the large drone bay. Even with maxed out carrier/advanced drone control skills, you will always have 5 spare if you lose some. Of course, the drone damage bonus is always nice to have if you do decide to front-line the beast. --------------------------------------------------------------------

Lock n Load 6, has DaMiGe tanking 9 ships at once, if i may quote. (excellent vid from you guys)

The general consensus is that get the carrier of the race that you are good at, if you fly caldari get the caldari carrier the battleship 5 will help your rohk/raven and so on for all the races. ------------- Midshipman Lithalnas - Logistics Division - Hadean Drive Yards
