Also, possibly a dumb question but how do you go about extracting the eve models from the .stuff files for importing into 3ds Max? I don't have the patience to model an Opux from scratch but if you can get the original model it's just a matter of pimping it up a bit.
It is easier to create from scratch than it is to pimp the existing one - trust me.
Yeah but I'd need a copy of the Opux model anywho. It'd help a lot to have a 3d reference to work off instead of a few screenshots.
Also, what's so hard about working off the original model? ___

You can't turn it to a poly, it would screw up, that's why you can't work with it.

Check out the EVE technology forum section for "tri-exporter" thread, should be somewhere near the top.

I get the feeling I'm making a noob out of myself here but...
You mean converting the model into an editable poly right? I just did a quick test and it appeared to work. I messed with a few polys and gave the Opux dumbo ears. Textures get screwed up obviously but apart from that... what am I missing? ___

Hrm... Well, the model certainly has the potential to look bad-ass. If there are any real professionals taking this on though I doubt my cheap-ass hack-work will be up to scratch. ___

I work as a 3D modeler for an architectural firm. I just saw this post and I will take a stab at it today if you have the time to wait - 2billion investment is worth it on both sides.

Isnt that the current model with the current texture, except you added a bump map and some lighting?
He said in his post it's the current model.

Whoops, i thought he meant that was HIS current version.
You can extract the model out with a program someone made... do a search on stuff exporter on the EVE forums.

Hmmm the model is not the problem. For a High quality printing version, the texture/skin is the problem.

I'll be giving it a shot as well, going to remake the model from scratch and try and texture it (we'll see how that turns out. I assume you don't mind if the texture is different in parts? ("course it must look like the original Opux") My modeling skills aren't nearly up to robo's though :)

Have you been living under a rock? ;)
Just a start: http://janvanderweg.com/pics/EVE/render1.jpg
To those using the eve model+texture: You should chop up the model in 3 parts because the alpha map is used for self illumination, alpha, and reflection depending on the part of the model.

p.s.
I hate gallente ships because they are so cuuuurvy.

Hi, heres my effort, *** WIP ***
I do appologise to CCP for editing their model, but I just had to to have a little play around.
I havent touched the model too much, just exagerated & highlighted the texture shaded areas into physical polys.
Axedups Opus Model
The Texture need re-aligning & I've only got a simple light in atm, so nothing show stopping for the mo..

Sounds fun. With a few months to tinker I'm in. I do this for a living as well.
BTW for any out there looking for a cheap way to get started modeling check out Wings 3d- its a free program based around an older out of production program named Nendo. Its kind of like modeling in digital clay. Personally I like to model in Nendo and render in a higher end package (mostly lightwave)... As far as I can tell you can't get ahold of Nendo anywhere now so wings3d is your option for a very good cheap modeler.
Have fun!

Not sure my surface modelling skills are as good as some of those here but hopefully I'll pull it back on the texturing

IMO for printing purpose, its more important a good texture then a good model. In the detail printing you have 80% of texturing and 20% of edges (not saying that modeling isn't important, just saying that you will notice much faster a bad texture then you will a bad model).

Looking forwards to seeing the results. Don't have the time to do it myself, but a bit of advice... Its a damn sight easier to work from scratch than from a current model. Take captures of side, front and top and use them as temp. backgrounds to create a blueprint to work from. Working from scratch allows you to create the texture mapping etc without having to constantly tweak the old model map. Plus a new model has a less dampening affect on your imagination.
But thumbsup folks. Keep the work going

That is the program- but good luck buying it from there. check the dates on the site- 1999.... You can try to purchase it if you want, but every time I have sent someone there to buy a copy it doesn't work out. I had one friend even send a money order that was returned. lol. Anywho Wings 3d works the same way and is free.
