The problem: with the current ransom mechanic, the person being ransomed doesn't have any guarantee that the person ransoming them will honor the agreement, which often leads to a non-agreement and thus consequent pretty explosions and lost profits for the pirates.
My solution: add a ransoming mechanic that will deactivate all offensive modules and render immobile the ransoming player for one minute after the ransom is paid. |

No. If you don't think the player ransoming you will let you go, don't pay it. Worse case scenario is you lose your ship anyway.
Or, you could, maybe, not put yourself in a position to have to pay ransoms.
EvE is hard. It's harder if you're stupid.
I couldn't have said it better.

So immediately after the ransom is paid, their alt/friend warps in/decloaks and finishes the job (or just keeps tackle).
And ship-disabling space-magic is extremely gross, conceptually.
If we were to assume that contractually enforced ransoming is desirable at all, some sort of escrow mechanic would make far more sense. I sort of doubt you could make it actually workable, though.

no.
fyi most mercenaries have hard won reputations, most will honor a random if they offer it. pirates are a different matter though.

So I can go get ransomed and for a small amount of money, just kill the ransomer free and clear without them being able to shoot back?
Sure they've got my money but just to imagine them cursing at their screen because all of their modules are offline.
It's a beautiful thought, but no. Don't pay ransomers, go down fighting or via self-destruct.

How would this mechanic deal with everyone's favourite ransom, A Song. Singing in TS is the best way to save your ship.
And this idea would be horribly horrible abused... so it should be forgotten...

You could always employ a credited 3rd party source for ransom demands.... Chribba might be looking to expand his services.

I think that if we added this new mechanic and made it infinitely complex, we could satisfy everyone.

-1 Remember ransom is not about letting you and your ship get away, it is about getting more ISK out of killing your ship and possibly YOU.
Ransom paid in real life is a crap shoot anyway, you never know if those demanding the ransom will follow the agreement even if you pay it.
Even though I am against this idea I want to address this.
SurrenderMonkey wrote:If we were to assume that contractually enforced ransoming is desirable at all, some sort of escrow mechanic would make far more sense. I sort of doubt you could make it actually workable, though. Actually the escrow mechanic is quite simple. The person paying the ransom transfers the ISK to Concord and when you let that person fly away un-harmed then the ISK is transferred to your account. If you kill them anyway then the ISK returns to the original players wallet. Once the ISK transfers one way or the other then it all resets as if it had never happened.

There is no such thing as ransom mechanic. If someone demands money in local/convo it's your judgement if you can/want to trust them. If you got yourself into a position that you consider paying ransom you can as well consider being podded. Anything else is gambling against the odds. |
