The notion of having stuff in space like nebulas etc to make it more colorful and less boring shot itslef in the foot already at the stage of inception.
Background story says something about eve space being located inside some immense dust region of space which basically is marketing blah blah to up the experince for the common crowd not versed with what space really looks like, with some graphical bling bling.

I cant say i dislike the current space with nebulas etc. But it would definitely be nice to have at least some systems or regions where the space is black with yellow stars etc in it.

I live in a constellation that is a bright red and pink. Yes i'd love some truly black space. A bit of a nebula is ok, but not swimming around in a tank full of slightly diluted blood. However, I still think EvE needs more and better tactical warning sounds.

I actually had a dream like this lastnight.
I dreamt that my brother was flying a freighter and I was escorting him in a frigate into 0.0 and it was very cool cos we were actually piloting the ships but 0.0 was really really dark, all black, and I couldn't see the docking port on the bottom of the station.
Then we got blown up and it turned into World of Warcraft (sort of) and I had to fly on the back on an eagle to get my corpse.
That chilli vodka before bedtime might not have been the best idea

I would like it if there was a lot more black space in a great many of the sky boxes.

Actually, space isn't black at all, it's just mostly comprised of dark matter. and not to get technical but black isn't a color at all, it's only the absence of light reflecting a color (ie you see it as black, but it isn't black at all, there's just no reflection receptable by our visual spectrum)
lol sorry couldn't resist
more ontopic, I think there's enough black space, but that could be because I live in one of the more dark regions of eve. Actually I think we could use some more objects in space with no meaning, and preferably sized as large as a dyson sphere (as large as earth's orbit around the sun) iow I would like space to be "filled up" a little more. ______________________________________ "There are NO bugs in EVE, just oversights" ----- Oveur and TomB, EvE fanfest 2006 |

I think the problem with the current backgrounds is that they give you the impression that you're flying around in a big ball shaped texture, which you are. You never get the sense of vastness and that you're flying through actual space.
If some of the backgrounds were black then you'd have no point of reference to judge distance from so it'd look like you were just staring into empty space.
It'd help the immersion loads. ----------- Join channel 'Turby' or die! (bring pie) I <3 carebears on toast ^^ - Xorus I'll trade you some carebears for some sheep -Tirg

Even counting dark matter, the vast majority of the universe (99.9999999999999999%) is empty space.
And black, by definition, is lack of a color (lack of reflected or emitted light).

Ironically, there is reason space as we see it is black and not a big field of light caused by all the billions of stars. This is because there is a large quantity of dust between us and the emitted light.

Actually space is filled with plasma and there is no such thing as dark matter. Dark matter was made up to make a failing theory (it isnt even a theory technically) work as it didnt work with what was being observed.

How about not having the stars all twinkle? I believe that this affect is caused by looking at the stars through atmosphere. If observed from space, most stars would shine with a constant brightness. I think the only exception would be variable stars.

We need some different back drops to the eve universe. It is the same background re coloured for every system. Come on CCP you can do better.

Agreed and I think CCp agrees also. In one of the E-ON articles they talk about the graphic upgrade and discuss how they would like for there to be darker environments and have higher contrast for shadows on the ship.
Personally I think it would be cool if the "darkness" of the background/environment was linked to either security or distance to empire... the closer you are to empire/hi-sec you see vibrant and bright backgrounds like we have currently, but the environment gets darker as you get farther away from empire/hi-sec.. and DEEPer into the depths of space.. you FEEL it. =========================

I thought that even at velocities faster than C , light hitting the ship form the front would be blue due to compresion and be red after passing the ship due to altering wavelength?
