Even counting dark matter, the vast majority of the universe (99.9999999999999999%) is empty space.
And black, by definition, is lack of a color (lack of reflected or emitted light).
Actually space is filled with plasma and there is no such thing as dark matter. Dark matter was made up to make a failing theory (it isnt even a theory technically) work as it didnt work with what was being observed.
You're confusing Dark Matter with Dark Energy.
Dark Matter has been mapped and its existence basically proven beyond all reasonable doubt. If dark matter doesn't exist, then Einstein's theory of gravity is wrong, which is highly unlikely.
Space is not "filled with plasma." The plasma is so low density that its about an atom or two per cubic meter in interstellar and intergalactic space. That isn't "filled with." Its still almost completely empty.

I dreamt that my brother was flying a freighter and I was escorting him in a frigate into 0.0 and it was very cool cos we were actually piloting the ships but 0.0 was really really dark, all black, and I couldn't see the docking port on the bottom of the station.
Then we got blown up and it turned into World of Warcraft (sort of) and I had to fly on the back on an eagle to get my corpse.
Get out more.
too funny. LordReaper, evemail me for your check.

If you want to get pendinc about it, then you shouldn't see stars much of the time, either. Anytime you're close to a planetary body or station, they should flood the area with enough light to block out most/all the stars.

There is currently way more colors than black. Don't get me wrong its the awesome backgrounds and features that make Eve great but it kinda sux to have to rotate camera to a dense patch of black to see your UI and overview clearer. _____________________________ Public Health Advisory - Say NO to OOC! |

Stuff like in Freespace II would be nice.
Yes there were plenty of nebulas but not the sort you see in eve, they gave a bigger feeling of depth and variety to space while still retaining the darkness and 'black'.
Oh and... I wanna fly in nebulas like those in Freespace II too. You can't see **** and your systems are screwed up but it is FUN. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I am all for making systems, in general, a little darker. Also, systems in 0.0 should be darker too, being further from the center cluster of the galaxy and all. And yes, the option to turn off all star/neubula light (IE - play only in black) is a great, simple idea that I myself would play with periodically.
But from the viewpoint of pure logic, it is starting to really scare me how many posters on this thread seem to be saying "Yes, make all the systems all black, with hardly any variance. Because what we have now is boring. And making everything the same color(or lack there of) will make things fresher and different."
All black is not variety. It is the opposite of variety. You are giving me a headache of Lewis Black-ian proportions.

CCP could implement a game menu feature to toggle between 2 texturing styles for all systems. One option would be "lots of nebula", other option could be "few nebula". This would effect client side texture files and shouldn't have any performance side effects.

And a "no nebula" option too please. Black space, twinkling stars, crests of planets and moons, hard shadows on ships ... space. :) If you want color, turn it on, if not, turn it off. Should not be very difficult to implement.

You may be able to see the brightest stars, and some lesser-magnitude stars if your eyes have time to adjust. A full moon can block out the light of many stars, and the Earth viewed from the Moon is a lot brighter than the Moon viewed from the Earth. So if you're near any planetary body, at least a good chunk of the stars should blink out unless your eyes have time to adjust (which is what HDR is simulates).

And what is with the Red Shift and Blue Shift when warping faster than light?
I thought that even at velocities faster than C , light hitting the ship form the front would be blue due to compresion and be red after passing the ship due to altering wavelength?
OMG imagine that in EVE, something like a shockwave of light in warp. Your ship would have almost an upside down flame coming off with blue shearing off the front and tapering off into red near the back.

All black is more spacey, and everything being the same and somewhat more realistic and atmosphereic is better than having a lot of variety, where none of the variations bear any resemblance to reality.

So they should make it so if you park your ship on the dark side of a planet with no nearby celestial bodies in view, you see omgwtfmany stars. Also, I demand the ability to park my ship on the dark side. No more of this always warping to the same point above the planet crap. ----------

Dark matter has not been proven beyond all reasonable doubt, far from it. Its the astronomers who asume they have proved it beyond doubt.

Holy hell that picture of totally black space looks awesome.
I agree with the sentiments expressed here - while the nebulas are very pretty, they're far too frequent. It'd be much better if they were smaller generally when drawn, and then if we had some constellations which were just wrapped in them (and if you really want to go nuts, make them good for gas mining).

Yes I agree, I find many systems just too bright.
Space should be a little darker IMO
And good change BTW with the recent changes, less stars makes the universe look better.

There is no air in space therefore no resistance t ships travelling. Therefore why to big ships with big engines travel slowly?
Why to big missiles with large propulsion move slowly?
The mechanics of EVE are more like underwater than in space.

There should be a great deal more variety to the back drops. There is only 2 backdrops that get used. There should be possibly huundreds not just the same ones that are colored again. Having darker systems in the outer edges of the galaxy is a good idea too. Come on CCP.

Make the backgrounds a lot more subtle and introducing black backgrounds aswell would indeed be very welcome. I think X3 and Nexus offered stuff like that, it makes them very moody - It would be more "EVE-like".

The backdrops of EVE resemble more what you might see in photographs taken of the heavens through telescopes with exposure times of several minutes or even hours in some instances.
There are a few different types of nebulae out there, two of them being reflective, where a gas/dust clod lingering close to a set of stars reflect their light. Then theres emission nebulae that actually produce their own light emission through being heated by intense radiation from a another active celestial body close by that doesnt emitt in the visual end of the spectrum but rater x-ray radiation or some such.
Not your everage microwave though.
Seeing them with the naked eye or even with a light sensitive camera in realtime would be a real challange if at all possible due to them being so weakly illuminated, not to mention being able to catch a glimpse of color in them.
I'm all for bling bling fancy stuff ofc. Eyecandy makes the world go around for sure, but what really does it for me is when it is beleivable, extrapolated from science, sort of 'this is what it probalby would look like' - thingamajingies.
Thats coolness
