Simple question...
Are there any situations that make fitting Smartbombs to your ship worth while? Or can you always out-perform them using conventional weapons?

Missions that swarm you with 4k bounty frigs. You can either empty out your launchers 2-3 times, or put a couple of smartbombs in your highs.

Edited by: Vellaron on 08/02/2007 04:47:59 Imagine you get jumped by a dominix and he sicks his little friends onto you, you've got him web/scram and right up close then let off your smart bombs you're gonna damage on all his drones and him with every pulse. As far as i know smart bombs ignore signature radius and large ones do 250-450 damage depending on quality, lets say you have two, and heavy drones have say 50% resistances with 800 total hitpoints? you'll kill all five drones in a couple pulses. But bare in mind, its a wasted slot if you're not getting attacked with drones, it also uses lots of cap, and make bloody sure there are no other non-hostile ships in radius or concord is not going to be happy with you.

Great for podkills. Sit on the edge of a bubble right where incoming people land, pop them and fire off the smartbomb(s). No need to lock those pesky pods...

Also to note, the blast goes from the edge of your ship, not the center point, i believe, so a large bomb on a huge ship hits a massive area. Officer large bombs on motherships seems to be a common practice for self defense...

Originally by: Jr Grae any situations that make fitting Smartbombs
Good properties: - Area effect : can damage multiple targets - Instant effect : high initial damage instantly at start of combat - Don't require lock : usable while under jamming/dampening/etc - Can damage unlockable targets : disruptor probes, targets in some parts of warp
Bad properties: - Very low cap per damage ratio against individual targets - Low damage per second ratio
From those properies it's easy to conclude there are pretty many niche usages for smartbombs. Most common usages are fitting 1-2 large smartbombs when you expect to face PC/NPC drones. Some officer bombs are even usable in missions against orbiting NPCs frigates.
There are even a few niche uses for setups build around smartbombs as primary weapon. These are usually targeted against swarms of frigates/ceptors, or for catching small ships using Warp-To-Zero.
This all pretty much refers to large smartbombs; haven't really heard of feasible uses for smaller versions.
Those familiar with Perl may play with my script to figure out what combinations can kill what kind of ships: ship_bombs.tar

The best smartbomb ship for PVP is by far the hyperion, it has good speed, very good cap and lots of HP.
highs: 4x named THE, 4x named KIN smartbombs meds: MWD, 2x heavy injector-II, 1x cap recharger-II, 1x 2 pt scram lows: damage control-II, 2x cap power relays, 3x i-stab
rigs: 3x CCC
Usually no need for lock or anything. Interceptors die in one volley, assault frigs in two, destroyers and interdictors in 3 or 4 depending on setup. I also managed to kill a pair of lachesis' while damped down to 3 minute locktime on them. Smartbombs >> your tinfoil recon ship. Most cruisers will also die easy, and fighting drone boats is funny as hell.

Aside from the faction ones, they are a bit of a waste, been hit by two lots of HP changes, which even rendered the best Officer smartbomb incapable of popping a pod (where as before a named thermal smartbomb would do the trick).
I may be mistaken but pre-castor they may have been 10km, the effects were certainly far more impressive as seen on the 'Caldari outlaw video' here
Pretty annoying they changed them to be ęsmartĘ i.e. not activate near gates or stations, it renders them useless for a lot of combat situations now - all because stupid people got splattered by Concord for using them in empire...
Give us back ędumbĘ smartbombs!

couldn't one use a Rokh as well for smartbombs, just like the Hyperion? 8x Large smartbombs... I've been toying with the idea.

In my early mission running days I would fly a Punisher in Minmatar space with 3 lasers and a smartbomb in the highs. I could fly into a swarm of frigs in a L1 mission firing the smartbomb and running my afterburner and repair module. I couldn't hang in there long due to cap issues, but that could take out ~6-8 frigs per run. I'd move away repairing and shooting back with the lasers.
I have also seen Ravens in a L4 mission use them to pop tackler frigates.
It worked great as long as the orbit distance was small enough, and due to the autocannons the NPCs used, their orbit distance was 1500m or so. ----------------------------------------------- Mercenary minded - I'll fly whatever works best. |

Gatecamp busting and stopping small ship gank squads are also two good places to utilize smartbombs. Few examples:
You know there's a ~25 man gang with lots of support (read: t2 frigs) in it with several heavy hitters. Fit smarties, capbooster, plates and whatnot, maybe even wcs since those things are acceptable in smartbomb fits. Then just jump through the gate with a few friends, uncloak simultaneously, wait for tacklers to attack (lock the big ships to seem like you're trying to actually aggro them instead of having frigs as your target) and when the tacklers come near enough, F1, F2, F3... Note: Doing this in empire/lowsec will kick your sec status quite low.
Carebear's way of rebuttal: Once again a ~25 T2 frig gang (and why not t1 cruisers too) is moving around in your space. By using your brain you figure out that they have to pass a certain pipe system (system with only two gates) to get to where they're going. Get in there, setup a bubble behind the gate so that everyone who warps in get sucked into the bubble, go sit in the warp in point of said bubble and wait for the local to spike up...and you should know by now what to do when they warp to you.
One real gank where I could've been the most hated person on the grid if I had fitted smartbombs. I was flying a fleet fitted Abaddon and got ganked by ~30man T2 frig squad (OK, there was a few Tempests too). If I've had fitted smartbombs I could've taken out most of their support since it was heavily T2 frig based and they were trying to swarm me by bumping, scramming, jamming etc. I obviously didn't have smartbombs (fleet setup, hello) so I was abruptly blown to bits after like 3-5 minutes of taking small hits.
Oh and smartbombs+Mackinaws are a great combo too. --- Mandatory disclaimer: These are my thoughts, not my corps/alliances. ---

Hah, smartbombs. Yeah I was playing around with a Scorpion about a week ago with a variation of different ones, given you use all larges and set them off at the same time, you only get about 4 runs before your cap dies.
But in the long run, imagine the damage against those teenyweeny ships.
