Is anything planned in the future to try and help with the rediculous lag that plagues this game? Or is the severe lag so ingrained in this game that most of the players and even developers have decided to live with it? This post is not meant to be flame bait or whatever but a serious question seeing as the game being so old, the lag only seems to get worse and not better as "upgrades" happen and time passes by.

They are trying to disperse the population, and tweak POSs, but other than that, no plan that I know of. Someone donate 10 million dollars so we can have a server a system!

Only time I ever feel any lag is in over congested systems (jita) and in big fleet battles.
Look in the Dev Blogs and read up on the Need for speedÖ plan.

Well considering this game is built around fleet fights and combat, and thats when the game comes crawling to it's knees, is not very comforting. Your signature exceeds the maximum allowed filesize of 24000 bytes - Devil ([email protected]) |

Lag in some systems that have more than 50 people for me, otherwise, fine everywhere else
Of course, there is Jita... *

Why do people always bring up Jita and the other newb systems? I never go there and could care less about empire space. It's about losing ships in 0.0 engagements to massive lag and a client that acts like sh*t during said lag. I just don't understand why I continue to have two accounts and spend so much time to progress characters only to get super frustrated when it's time to fight and the server lag removes any ounce of fun. The kicker is that nothing has been done to fix it and appears nothing in the future will fix it.
I would suggest that CCP drop everything they are doing and focus 100% energy on by far the longest and largest problem in this game; lag. Right now they keep adding new stuff to a laggy, unstable base that will eventually fall over like the leaning tower of Pisa if it weren't corrected. I guarantee Eve players would be much happier with a lag free game then getting worthless stuff like walking around in stations etc.

Edited by: Hawk TT on 10/02/2007 22:26:50 Ok, lets be more realistic! CCP is completely aware of the lag-related problems, but it's not something you could fix overnight. It's a process and we all have to understand that fighting the lag problems will take time.
Are they going to do something about lag? I believe yes - the motto for 2007 is "The need for speed". Read this DevBlog post and you will get better idea: A New Year is upon us...
The lag could have many sources. It could be CCP server related (storage or CPU), connection related (CCP proxies, routers, your ISP) or just that your PC is running out of resources. I regularly take part in 60+ PVP fights and I almost never have lag problems. Some hints: 1. Do you have PVP overeview preset which is limited only to enemeies of certain ship class? When I am in a BC or BS I don't want to see anyone else than other BSs or BCs. So I have several PVP presets. Every additional object included in the overview means additional down-stream from the server to your EVE client. 2. How much RAM you have, what CPU and what GPU? Is your system loaded with other apps? 3. How good your Internet connection is? I am not talking ONLY about bandwidht, because the latency is MUCH MORE important? Usually I have latency smaller than 50ms when I do tracert to the EVE server. You could have very good download speed, but it does not mean that your ISP gives you a good service for interactive applications like EVE...
Hope this helps the discussion

I never said CCP wasn't aware of the huge lag problem. Any person that has ever played this game is very well aware of the lag problem. As for saying they are fixing it, they have been saying that for years now and nothing changes. They can post all they want about speed upgrades like they have done in the past. What matters is what happens in game, and thats lag ever since I started playing this game.
Also, my PC has nothing to do with it. I have quite a fast machine that gets over 10k in 3dmark06. I have played this game on connections ranging from DSL in Germany to rediculously fast Cable in the US. I have tried every trick in the book, turning off all effects, closing overviews, minimizing eve clients on warp ins, etc etc and the net result; gameplay ruining lag. Just take a look at any thread in alliance discussion about combat, 90% of the people constantly complain about the horrendous lag. BTW your link didn't work. Well, I did read the blog titled "the need for speed 2007". I am very skeptical though about such small changes having a large impact on the horrendous lag in fleet combat.
Anyone have any thoughts on the need for speed 2007 blog?

The need for speed '07 thing seems to try and reduce database lag but not increase the power of the servers. I don't know how things such as limiting asteroid belts, decreasing numbers of npc spawns etc will help massive lag in fleet fights. |

yawn minimum connection speed away from 56k and boost it to 254k would be a good start.

So you think people on 56k adversly effects the rest of the server because it is so slow? Has CCP every said anything about that? Is there really that many people that still use dial up this day and age?

in fleet battles the data takes longer to get back to CCP therefore leading to some smal bits of lag not many do but there are some

Fix the frakkin' fleet client lag. There is NO reason that the client should freeze for a second each time a fleet mate decloaks from a gate, yet not when a gang mate decloaks from a gate.
We're in the middle of the biggest number of fleet and massed ship movements EVE has ever seen and we have to deal with a stupid bug like this in the client?

I have never had lag like that... Thats just over exaggeration or something wrong on your side. When i have lag, its actual lag, like things taking forever to do (reloading, activating mods, locking) or seeing a black screen for 5 mins when undocking. Ive never had my client freeze like youre describing it.

It seems to me that people tend to stick to the systems that have good agents and factory services. Id love to find a good hole in the wall system where no one goes to run missions and stuff and avoid high traffic but the agents there arnt worth a crap. I suggest changing around how the agent ranking works. Dont force people to certain systems to get good agents. Get rid of the -rating on agents and people will spead out more.

IÆve done some tests in the past and to me the lag seems to be in the way eve works, if youÆve ever run the event logger during a fleet combat you will know what i mean. I.E. in some situations like fleet battles the game calls upon your computer to execute several thousand scripts in 1 seconds time span. Its the whole fact that for instance it takes somewhere around 8 scripts just to show a nosferatu effect, now how many scripts do you think it would need to run per second to show just one ship in full combat?
IÆve resigned myself to thinking that the only way eve will be lag free is if the start from scratch and recode the thing with a different technique, and lets face it, thatÆs not going to happen so its a case of love it or leave it IÆm afraid.
Unless anyone has evidence to the contrary this is my belief.

My PC spec is CPU Athalon 64 3500 3 gig of PC4200 corsair extreme ram 2 x 80 gig sata II in raid 0 stripe 2 x Nvidia 6800 in SLI
This should be more than enough to run a game of today let alone a game of 4 years old.
For the past 12 months I may as well be runnig eve in wireframe mode. All turret effects off, all game effects off, sound off, zoom out 100%
Still in fleet battles I run a 0-3fps and all i am looking at is little purple/red squares. I have been playing eve for 4 years now and for a pvp'er its got progressivly worse, to the point it looks like im playing a free shareware game made to run on a z80 cpu.
I started playing eve because it looked superb the graphics alone got me interested in starting up. Now though I would just rather it ran smooth enough for me to play in the way i want to play, i.e. pvp fleet combat.
I wouldn't be bothered if they made it wireframe, black & white, crappy resolution as long as I could actually be able to activate mods and see my screen refresh as things happen instead of looking at a pretty frozen screen having no idea whats going on.
I assume the poeple replying to this post stating "what lag?" are people who pve, I have 4 characters in this game. My pve characters run 100% fine I can do lvl 4 missions in motsu with 200 other people in local, however i cant pvp in 0.0 with 2 x 20 man fleets.
I know CCP are trying to fix these issues im not denying that but as the author of this post states I only see fixes in the patch notes I never feel the effect of the fixes in game. It is gettin worse as time goes on.
