As a ***56k user , EvE works great! However with Vent, not only do voice comms break up, but the EvE client slows down so bad for me that by the time the next system loads I am 100k from the gate, when I warp to the gate there is no one there, for the first 5 seconds anyway, you get where I am going here right?
Anyway, it made me wonder how Vivox, EvE, and the 56k users are going to get along in the future.
Anyone know

I would be interested as well. As I'm on dial up. But I have no problem on TS. TS with default codecs I can use that and play eve no prob. But vent and default codecs = a bit of lag. (Can be a lot of there are a lot of people in gang/talking/etc.)

Have not tested it with 56k but I doubt it will work. Fitting both voice and game data in such a small bandwidth just isn't practically possible. ---------------------------------------- A Guide to Scan Probing in Revelations |

To put it bluntly, it won't get along at all in the future. 56 kilobaud just isn't enough bandwidth to go around. Let's do some calculations real quick. 56 kilobaud is 56 kilobits per second. Divide by 8 to get a *MAXIMUM* of 7 kilobytes per second. That's a total of 7168 characters per second, or 1792 32-bit numbers per second. On top of that, most 56k connections don't even connect at the maximum speed. If your phone lines pass through an amplifier (a device to strengthen a phone signal to prevent loss of data), your connection is automatically reduced to either 28kilobaud or 32 kilobaud (if you are lucky).
For reference, a CD quality mp3 file streams at 128 kilobaud. uncompressed audio (.wav) sampled at 44100 samples per second with 16 bits per sample so that's about 700kilobaud to stream "raw" audio.
There just isn't enough bandwidth to support both an MMO and TS/Vivox/Vent

Crap, I guess I am defying logic....as I play games and use TS all the time, and I have no problems.

I have NP with TS as well, which leaves me hope for Vivox. Based on my comparisons of TS and Vent, not all voice comms are created equal.

Well, that's interesting. You must be using one very, very lossy codec to be able to do that...

No...as I said before the default codec works just fine.
Same with vent, it works fine AS LONG as I'm not doing much. (as it's higher quality by default). So if I'm just running missions or ratting and chatting it will work fine. Anything more though doesn't work well with vent.

Actually, for teamspeak and vent, your only option is to configure the server to use a different codec and/or sample rate. You cannot set your own CODEC as a Client user. The client program will automaticaly conform to the codec that is set for the channel you have joined.

Teamspeak works fine with a 13kbps codec, and that leaves about 40kbps for EVE, which is honestly plenty for anything but fleet battles.
