Because it seems you *might* have a small problem with the shelf life of it if you're planning for a release late next year, or even the year after that.
PS4 might be coming out soon
If you keep making this game for the ps3, you might be left behind and dust will flounder.
Just something to think about. I hope Dust will be made so that it can run on a new console... |

CCP said that when the PS4 becomes available, Dust 514 will soon be downloadable for it. Can't find any sources, but it was said during a number of interviews after the trailer unveil during E3. |

Who the hell is going to want an outdated game when a brand new console comes out with awesome new games and graphics? This is the problem I'm referring to. I'm wondering whether or not Dust will actually be viable on the PS4, or will it just be like playing an outdated game on a brand new powerful system (quaint, but not that much of a rush). |

Dust will be getting graphic and gameplay updates in it's free expansions, exactly the same way EVE has for the last several years. When the PS4 comes out, if Dust is still going, then it's gonna get it's own Trinity.
After all for the last few years CCP have been making new graphic content/assets way more intensive than what the average PC can handle today and scaling them down for the EVE client, it's not hard to imagine them doing the same for Dust. |

Dust is a new type of title for both CCP and Sony; with some exciting future potential. I'd be very concerned if Sony was not working with CCP to ensure that the game would be able to take advantage of a new platform allegedly said to be ready before Dust 514's release date.
But that is entirely speculation. |

RIGHT, because OBVIOUSLY these are the same graphics eve has had for 8 years, they TOTALLY havent updated it whenever it becomes economically viable for them.
they already said they will be updating DUST often similar to how they do with EvE, meaning if they feel the game ahs begun lagging behind EvE in terms of grpahics capabilities some time down the road, they will release an expansion, simple as that. |

To the idiot article writer about end of consoles needs to take a step back and realize that portable devices for gaming with social functions included are just an evolution of consoles.
To truely kill gaming 'consoles' would be to ban any and every game that is then, now, or will be on any media format.
To the thread.
CCP stated that Dust 514 could be patched over into other consoles and platforms as the environment dictactes. So if the nextbox provides the network foundation that PS4 might refuse them (this is sony remember the best at shooting self in foot. Then we could The ps3 developer exodus fiasco gave xbox 360 the edge it needed to win this generation.) possibly see dust moving to the other side once ps3 drops of the radar.
Also if planet side was something to worry about? why would an mmo need a sequel? The best mmos re-evolve themselves.

As far as consoles go, I don't remember any company every attempting to update the graphics of the same game like that, so it would be a completely novel thing to do.

I think another issue is that they're working with the Unreal 3 engine, which they have to modify to an extent. Epic games are planning to release the UE4 engine for the next generation of consoles e.g. the PS4, but that won't even be ready until next year, so if CCP decided to go with the PS4 and UE4 along with it, we'd still be waiting for the development of Dust to even start and it would be years away until release.
This way, CCP get some Unreal engine experience, they hopefully build up a Dust community and when the PS4 rolls around CCP can start work on an upgraded Dust. If they have high resolution, high poly art assets from Dust development right now, then that would be the easiest thing to import to the new Unreal engine. It's all the new code and programming that will be the main task of an upgraded Dust for PS4.
Also food for thought. Halo 2 came out in 2004 on the original xbox and it's online multiplayer was a huge success. It was made backwards compatible with the xbox 360, including the online multiplayer and was still played until MS shut down the original xbox live service in 2010. That game was still being played, for 6 years without new maps or gameplay features, graphic updates and even with Halo 3 available. Simple reason, the online multiplayer was fun. Doesn't matter if it's console or PC, if the online multiplayer is fun it will get played for years. |

I think the Wii, PS3 and 360 all have something to say about handhelds being competition for consoles.
As for Lint403 or whatever, I'm sure if they can network PSN and Tranquility to get EVE and Lint communicating, they can network PSN and PSN together to get PS3 Lint and PS4 Lint communicating.
Xbox 720 will no doubt have the same lolretrictions as the 360, and the Nintendo Feesees will be as gimmicky as the Wii.

While I'm not a Halo fan, personally, I don't think you should be comparing the popularity of Halo to the possible popularity of a relatively obscure game made by a relatively obscure company. Halo fans are very devote in their following of Halo... |

Yes they are, I play Halo myself occasionally. But Halo when it first came out was also obscure, made by an obscure company who had never developed for a console before and were competing against some pretty tough competition. Not to mention the xbox back then was a newcomer with only a few exclusives, the PS2 was where it was at with Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid, Medal of Honor and such.
Halo was popular because it had a fun multiplayer, the universe and lore was also interesting, it was something new and their was nothing really like it around (On consoles that is).
You also have to remember consoles are starved for variety, everyone plays CoD or Halo because there really isn't that much else around. PC gamers are spoilt for choice when it comes to awesome multiplayer games. |

Well, since dust will be an important part of the revcamped sov mechanic, I think it is safe to assume that CCP plans for dust to last a while. Since it is married to EVE Online (almost 9 years now and going), CCP will not release your typical console game and expect a shelf life of 6 months. They are gonna release a console game that will last for years - like EVE. And since they are in bed with Sony on this, I think it is also safe to assume that sonys plans for PS 4 are well known in Reykjavik. |

CCP 'building tech for next-gen consoles'
I was going to post this in another thread, but I'll just leave it here. Considering that CCP has PlayStation 3 development kits and that Sony has a marketing deal for Dust 514, it would be wise for CCP to invest some interest in development kits for future hardware. If Sony pays for exclusivity on Dust, then it would make a great launch title for the PlayStation 4. I can see it happening. |

it's funny, i've been saying this for a year - PS4 was announced at E3 for next year (2012)
It will likely be backwards compatible, but even if it is it isn't likely to last long. How many people continued playing ps1 games on the ps2? And the ps2's on the ps3?
Not to mention the FPS crowd typically has an attention span of at most 3 months.. |

The crux of his argument is that portable (handheld) devices are becoming so powerful as to eliminate the necessity of owning both those and consoles, especially because he sees 'casual' gaming becoming more popular than the typical MMO grind.
His pedigree is quite lengthy, going back to 1979.
"Garriott's career spans the game industry from the Apple II days in 1979 to the present, where he is working at his newest company Portalarium on the next generation of gaming. Garriott created his first company, Origin Systems, along with his brother Robert, their father Owen and programmer Chuck Bueche. Origin Systems produced many notable games, industry luminaries (such as Warren Spector), and several important companies were created by Origin Systems alumni (including id Software and Digital Anvil). Origin Systems was acquired by Electronic Arts in 1992, and Garriott left to found Destination Games in 2000. Destination Games was acquired by Korean gaming company NCSoft less than a year later. Garriott left in 2008 and founded Portalarium, where today he's busy creating a new game to once again advance the state of the art."
He makes a good argument, whether he is right or not, we will see.

And Ultima series. And. And. Like Peter Molyneux, he gets gaming on a fairly fundamental level. A couple of failed games out of a stable of many successful ones does not make him a failure or a has-been.

Yeah, but you can plug it in to your 54" television. That would make your handheld device a "console". I already do this with my tablet. Also, who is to say the game you play requires a big display at all times. Angry birds anyone?
You may be a bit behind on your argument info, portable PC sales (notebooks) surpassed Desktops in 2008.
