You see... the point of actually playing a game is having fun. That's true for at least most of the people playing. The problem is, when people start to become too serious about their game and treat it more like a job. That's the point where they start to use tricks like logging, because they want to avoid "losing" wherever they can.
Most people I know who play like this unfortunately don't realise how counterproductive this is. As I said a game is all about having fun. When it stops being fun, you might stick around for a while but eventually you'll stop playing. No fun, no play.
What I am trying to say is pretty much that if you use these tactics to avoid losses, you might be happy about not losing your ship this time, but in fact you are taking a lot of fun out of your own game. Taking it to extremes, a game where you never lose is not fun. Not ever having to recover from a loss, not ever having any kind of setback and always coming out on top is like playing Super Mario on godmode. It's fun for a few minutes but ultimately you'll get bored, then you'll lay down the pad and look for something that is actually entertaining.
Personally I've been through this, too. I got too serious about Eve and started to see it more like a contest, doing everything I could to "win the game". It was fun, at first, but one day I woke up and realized that the fun's gone... replaced by a mentality that would prevent me from ever really having fun playing the game again unless I completely changed the way I treat it. Some of the people I used to play with had the same attitude, with the end result being that most of them actually stopped playing.
So nowadays if I run into a camp and die, of course I will frown. However, the hours and days I might spent recovering from that loss will certainly provide a lot of funny moments and something worth playing for, and the knowledge I gain from that loss will most likely make me a better player.
After all it's all about your mentality. Out of personal experience though I can say that using tactics like this might seem to make sense but after all they're deteriorating your game, due to the mindset and general attitude they facilitate.
Another edit, to the OP: Think about it. You logged off and saved your ship. Great. But now what? People look at you and say "oh well he logged, gg, what a ....". Fun? I guess not. Well at least for me that kind of disrespect isn't, even though I tend to care less about what people say to me. Still it's not exactly fun having people talk about you like that, right? What if you would've stayed? Decloak, hopefully take down something before getting killed. What will people say? "He stayed and fought, even took me down before popping." Next day in corpchat you'll have a story to tell, you'll have someting to laugh about with your friends. You can team up with some people and make some money to get back your ship and gear. You can ***** the market a bit, or talk to some of your corpmates to organize a new ship. Maybe you'll get to know some of them better during the process, maybe you'll have a decent little mining/farming session during which you can have some fun with you mates. Maybe... The point is: You'll never know because what you did was log off and not even play.
