Hello!
I purchased a Retriever and a pair of strip miners last night, and took my new barge out for a spin. As I was preparing to mine, I started doing some calculation, and realized, that I actually was going to have slightly less efficiency (measured in meters cubed per minute) with the mining barge than I would with a Brutix, 6 Miner IIs and a Mining upgrade, by approximately 60 m3 per minute.
So, with the exception of Ice Mining, what is the impetus for using a mining barge? I suppose I don't have to drag to a container as often, but beyond that, I don't see a benefit.
Thanks in advance for any opinions! Fair Travels! Cors

All but the 3 strip mining barges, and the speciality Ice Miner are pretty sucky.
The 2 strip version is only really worth flying out while training the barge skill to level 5, for the fun feeling of "woohoo I'm a miner in a proper barge".
The 1 strip barge, well, I can't work out what place that has in the game.
(Sorry for not using the barge names, can't be arsed to look them up, but know vaguely what I'm on about!)

Coveter or Hulk should be your focus.

One nice thing with the barges is it's alot easier to do with the longer cycle time as you can turn your attention away from the screen for more than a couple of minutes.

I run on my hulk
solo 3 T2 strips w/ T2 crystals T2 mining drones T2/Faction shield tank (can tank 2x 1.1 mil Angel BS and frigs no probs) and 2 T2 mining upgrades
in group i run shield bots, put them on my buddies hulk he does the same to me, tank rats big time, no issues (actually it tanks better than most tank only ships and is productive)
Also train the leadership skills up for foreman and director they do help

In lowsec I mine in a Dominix with Modulated Deep Core Miner IIs (you need some fairly hefty skils for these) and plenty of drones for defence.
The normal mining barges are too paper thin, and the Hulk is simply too expensive for me to risk.

note that a mining barge does get a bonus per skill level to strip miner income, while a combat BS does not.

Well, the barge is a lot cheaper than a Brutix, no? ;p Mind you, the Retriever doesn't really beat out an Osprey either, if the Osprey has maxed-out cruiser skill.
It's also pretty nice not having to constantly babysit the cargo hold fill rate. That Brutix will fill its cargo hold in less than one cycle - you have to manually empty out the ore every 45-50 seconds, or you'll overflow and your lasers will turn off. With a Retriever, you're getting a touch less ore (not a whole lot, mind), but you can get up and get a sandwich or hit the can without missing a beat. Mining isn't exactly an enthralling mental activity, so reducing the amount of attention you have to pay to it is a good thing (unless you're in low-sec or 0.0 with no escort, in which case, what the hell are you doing in a barge anyway?)
And yes, Dominix for BS mining fun. Can't quite keep up with a Covetor, but you can fit an excellent tank on it, and you don't have to choose between mining drones and rat-defense drones (heck, you can just drop five sentries, which makes for one nasty approach run for a pirate.)

Think of the obvious:
Skill pathing.
A small or medium barge might suck/be merely comparable to mining in a battleship.
Think of the poor industrial characters who haven't trained for battleships.
Just because something's made redundant/outmoded by a different ship, doesn't mean it's useless.

well i bought the medium barge, because i could not yet afford a BS in any way... the barge was a heck of alot cheaper, and required fewer skills... and mines almost as much..
so yes.. the med barge has it's fair use...
now the first barge.. don't think anyone buys it anymore... EvE-CCG Spoiler Database |

When considering which is a better miner, BS or Retriever, alos think about how much more ore you can mine given that you will be mining much sooner in the Retriever.
Not saying a BS is a bad mining vessel, but a character may be better served in the long run at least starting with a mining barge, even if a BS is the long term choice for mining.

12 days till Retreiver.. that being said.. in the interim I am planning to go for modulated deep core mining.
Say a rock has 500 ore left.. with modulated deep miners will I mine more ore then a T2 miner since its a deep core, or is it Deep cores get slightly more.. slightly faster?

You will get your 500 ore faster with the deep core.

For any osprey miner.. I am making 2772 massive scordite per cycle with 3 Miner 2's, 1 co-processor and 1 MU (currently trying to get a second one).
How much better will it be for lowsec mining with deep cores and is it worth it?
Once I go strip miners (which begs to ask.. ya or nay on deep core strippers) in my 0.0 home I plan to take my osprey to lowsec for mining there.. As this will primarly be solo mining.. w/o cargo expanders due to MU and co-proc.. do you recomend deep cores or stickw ith tech 2? Are the deep cores worth it?
Also approx how many cycles do the mining crystals last? I wanna stock up for 0.0 and not have to go back to empire for more for awhile.

Hard core mining is a real committment. Getting just your average barge simply isn't worth the time you spent unless you have a specific need... such as getting ice... you obviously can't do that in an osprey.
Aside from that, if you're not going to go all the way to the covetor/hulk, then going up the barge tree is kind of a waste of time since the Osprey can do basically as well as your 2-strip miner barge.
I need to go run these numbers again because a buddy of mine was asking this same question earlier, but that's the synopsis. --- Singing: "I ain't got no siggy..." |

Indeedy. The medium barge is just a stepping stone to the large barge, which does take some skill to train. The small barge is only worth flying if you can't wait the 8 hours (I guess) from Mining Barge I to Mining Barge III.
The small barge for that reason is one of the most pointless ships in the game. It has no niche whatsoever.
I only mentioned Battleship mining in my other post as an alternative to the barge route for lowsec. And come to think of it, highsec now, with all the karazy anti macro miners who are a bit trigger happy!

I will be mining ice immediatly once I get the barge up and running. I plan to go higher then mining marge but atm the second mining barge is my current goal to get my operation up and running.
I plan to do strip/ice mining in 0.0 but also have a smaller personal mining setup in lowsec that will probably be using an osprey instead of strip miners (not sure yet)
I only have to worry about lowsec pirates/rats so would like recomendations on lowest sec I can survive in an osprey with drones only for defense (my last high will have a tractor beam so I can lug my can to different parts of the belt)

I've just switched over to the Maelstrom... 8 Miner IIs and 1 mining upgrade (trying to get some faction CPU upgrades to fit a second mining upgrade... or maybe an EC2 so I don't have to be so busy emptying the cargo )
Doubt I'd use it in low sec (I'm mining in 0.0) as it would be a little vulnerable to ganking.
One thing that bugs me a bit about the barge progression though is the big skill training disparity to go from Retriever -> Covetor -> Hulk. It is taking me roughly 42 days to get from being able to fly the Retriever to being able to fly the Covetor. There is then only about 2-3 days of training to get into a Hulk. It seems a little skewed.

I agree but then I guess they figure 600 mil for a Hulk skews things back

Unless you are in an alliance, 0.0/low sec mining in a hulk is equivilant to throwing the money away, trust me, seeing a hulk on scanner will draw everyone attention to you.
If you stay in empire, its gonna take you a month to break even, and that's still a lot of mining per day.
So the moral of the story is: mining is boring. ----------------------------------------------- I am a forum alt, my main is too shy to show his face. |
