Hello everyone,
I must say I've been pretty disappointed by the Titans after months of waiting for the ships that were supposed to be a real gameplay change.
Sure, there are new modules to play with, DD and portal jump are quite impressive, but what are the real changes to the core of the 0.0 gameplay ? Titans are cool, but they are still one more toy for the already powerful alliances to become more powerful, don't change the territory conquest game, the blobbing, etc...
A few months ago, when devs speaked about Titans, I imagined some giant ship being able to serve as giant logistic bases, equalling the mothership of Homeworld or the Eldar craftworlds in Wh40k.
Here are some ideas, in this way of thinking the Titans, that could fix some of the recurrent issues people have with those ships (virtual invincibility, logoffsky, etc...), while adding different gameplay possibilities and a good bit of roleplay:
- First, make the Titan more of a mobile base than a regular ship. To support this idea, the Titan ship doesn't disappear if its pilot log off, instead, it enters into "anchored" mode.
- It takes around 30 minutes to enter "anchored" mode, and while anchored, the Titan works almost like a POS: it generates a force field where people can protect themselves from ennemies, refit (with or without a user limit, I don't know), use an automatic defense system, use the clone vat bay, produce maybe ? etc... Note that the Titan can enter "anchored" mode on demand if the pilot is still online.
- While in "anchored" mode, the Titan can be put into reinforced, like a POS, and follows the same rules. This would let a chance of destroying a Titan and make every Titan destruction a real epic battle, worth the permanent wreck.
- The Titan can leave "anchored" mode when above 75% tank (shield + armor, or shield *or* armor depending on the Titan, I don't know), it takes 30mins to do so while the tank must stay above this percentage.
- Of course, the Titan keep its DD, jump portal, etc... the "no disappearing on logoff" means that its tank would need to be boosted while in anchored mode (boost it's resist ? it's shield maybe ?)
These are just some ideas, I don't know if it's possible, they would need some balancing, etc... but I think this would be a good way to create new type of alliance play (nomadic alliances ? outcasts, instead of "falling to jita" would be able to keep living in 0.0 to an extent, just not possessing a territory of their own anymore), put some dynamic in the territory conquest game (wich tend to stabilize at one point into big, solidified blocks), etc...
Just my 2 isks

Edited by: Contra Bant on 04/03/2007 21:24:08 I myself am a nubcake to this game, but I joined, expecting this kind of thing to exist. When I found out POS were just a grouping of floating structures that have a shield and some nice guns, I was kind of disappointed. Once I found out that Titans were just really big ships that do nothing but warp in, DD, warp out. I was wrecked. This would bring a whole new level to owning a titan. Currently, it's a big task to own a titan, with, in my opinion, not a whole lot of reward. A titan of this kind will open up completely new kinds of warfare, or expand other parts of EVE (Super-Mining Asteroid-Eater, anyone? Or a Superfreighter/Shipyard?). Seeing Titans in this form fight would be beautiful. /signed (I can't figure out how to change characters on the forum, but my main character's name is Puf)

It's only a little sad that no one has replied to this, besides me (Figured out how to change characters :P can't beleive I overlooked that little drop-down box...). This idea may have a chance of being thrown into the Dev-List, it just needs some support. If you don't support it, at least contribute to the conversation.

I'm happy to hear that from someone else. Just a little sad that such a post is slowly falling D: Anyway, I may repost an idea like this, if no one else replies.

I also like this idea, but compared to the actual titans it looks way more advanced in tech level. This could be worked out, but I'd say tech 3 at least, or a small version of it at tech 2.
(Yeah, theoretically there'll be up to 5 tech levels, or so I've read)
Have fun.

From a rp point of view, a ship such as a Titan vanishing in a second (hrp: when its pilot log off) seems to me far more technologically advanced ;)
We don't even know about T2 BS, let alone capital T2. The changes proposed in my first post are made to add a more immersive dimension to the Titan, and hopefully open new alliance gameplay and strategies, which is not actually the case with those beasts.

I read another thread about planetary colonies...were a Titan like this to ever be incorporated into the game, maybe they could follow some of the proposed colony rules, especially if there were more specialised Titans such as shipyards or miner-Titans.

Yeah, I'm thinking Titans could develop sort of like characters, except on a more 'Skill Tree'-esque system, possibly even developing just like a regular character if players want greater customizability. This would also allow a Titan to be very powerful in the hands of anyone with the skills to pilot one, not just characters with 100 Mil. SP and the best implants available. Of course, being able to pilot a Titan is a large endeavor, some players may have rushed through Spaceship command instead of focusing on secondary skills. A little unlikely, but its possible players haven't put a 'substantial' amount of SP into those skills.

When I read the first issue of EON they talked about Titans and how they were going to be 'massive siege engines, the keep, caravan, and king' to quote the article. I also thought that a Titan would make a good POS Tower as it offers storage for ships and equipment, refitting facilities, and should be able to power other POS arrays and guns to fulfill the base of operations role.
My thoughts, Fraszoid

Currently titan acts like a repelant and big e-peen :/ Good tanked bs can survive DD blast - not that it shouldn't but it really doesn't matter. Someone goes kamikadze - opens a cyno near enemy fleet titan fires a DD and the party is over for next 1h MEH

I'd like to see titans beeing able to build a buble around them like a pos buble that you can shoot out of. so basically a fleet with a titan would have a high advantage as the titan can shieldtank for the whole fleet!

Yes, but the big idea I'm getting here is Titan on Titan Siege. A Titan attacks an anchored Titan, and all their little pals undock and it's just pure carnage.

I'll sign and bump.
Titans need a bigger role in the game for all the work it takes to create one. Plus the only two active titans lost (so far as I know) were logoff incedents and that's pretty cheap. The pilot flying at Titan can't leave it to do anything else so he's stuck in this massively expensive special-use mode.
Being able to anchor and leave it with some of it's point defenses still operational would be great. Maybe they could still operate as a jump gate while the pilot was offline.
Also, the idea of an anchored, reinforced mode just makes sense.

I mostly agree with this. I think that there could be better ideas as to how it could protect and aid it's allies, but you definitely give a good start. I mean the titans are pretty big... All it has is a tiny drone bay, a jump drive portal, a doomsday device, and a clone vat. A ship of that size could field so many more types of warfare, including a fighter bay, and WAY more defensive weapons. I mean if you labored for such a long time spending so many resources and putting so much technology and knowledge into creating the most powerful ship in all of history, i'd make that it's only defense wasn't hiding in a safespot or pos with a decent capital tank. I was expecting something much more creative. I doubt any titan pilots even fit Xlarge weapons on it.

I'm dubious about investing too much developer time into Titans. Sure, it is nice to dream of the biggest baddest ship, but the fact is that 90 % of the players will never be in a position where their corp/alliance owns a titan, and a huge majority probably won't see one for a long long time. Developer time would be better invested on things that affect everyone, or at least a majority of people, rather than the handful of people worldwide who own a titan, and the slightly-large handful who see one fielded regularly.
Either that, or have some sort of "efficiency breakthrough" which turns the current titans into superpowerful prototype titans, and creates new ones that are accessible to your average corp. That kind of change would justify some more work being put into titans.

I like the idea you put forth.
My biggest dissapointment with the capital ships was their lack of size. I would have expected the carriers to be at least 3-5 times bigger than battleships and Titans to be many multitudes bigger than those. ----- CCP: Please make ship loot to drop in a can next to the wrecks. Edit: On the test server you can now salvage wrecks with loot. After a succesfull salvage the loot is left in a jetcan. |

This is what I originally thought that titans were when I first started playing. But no, they are practically just bigger ships with bigger guns.

This OP is full of awesome.
EDIT: Also, a Titan seige with two anchored down Titans a 100km apart, shield bubbles up shooting at each other sounds awesome.
