Needful information , 99% of my friends play WoW. How do I draw them away from Warcraft and into the Eve universe? Now before you say "if they play WoW then they would have no interest playing EVE" I don't think that is 100% true or I wouldn't have left WoW for eve. I've been off and on for years and have left in the past mainly because I got really bored. Now I'm holding on but since my RL friends play WoW and thats all they talk about most the time its getting difficult again. How do I sell this game to a WoW junkie?

If they have played more than one year, don't bother. My friend who played EVE with me long time ago, is now total WoW junkie and I cannot lure him back anymore - he even had 2 accounts .
In WoW everyone is winner and no losers. Noone has to be victim, everyone can be hero. Thats major factor why people prefer virtual worlds like that - escape reality. In reality, we get shafted and hurted so why should we face same dilemmas in virtual life?
.. and yes, I'm one of those bastids that makes you life miserable in EVE

and thats perfectly find, because when we find you and kill you for your crimes ( or just for the bounty) it makes us feel like we have done something. Although it may only rob you of isk (which I don't agree with but for now it will do) its that feeling that I enjoy. As far as WoW , I thought they would have gotten bored with it after level 60. Then the expansion came out....
Mainly I'm looking for the GREAT things about eve. Something I can sell to them and snap them out of the madness

Do what I do. Make comparisons. I went about it the wrong way initially, trying to force it on them, and it didn't work out so well. If I knew now what I knew back then, I'm sure all of my friends would be flying alongside me. However, I have garnered people into the game who I had just recently met when we started talking about video games.
Make an impression on the game. Compare it to WoW. You've played it, so you know both sides. The next time they talk about PvP, tell them about what happens when you PvP. While they will talk about "Man...only another 60 bagillion Honor Points and I'll be able to get my mount. I need to kill more [Horde / Alliance]!"; to which you respond, "Yeah, so the other day I killed one person. First I destroyed his ship (make sure this story is about a HAC, Command Ship, or Battleship). He probably spent... oh... at least a month or two saving for it, plus all the armor stuff and weapons on it, which I took the liberty of taking what survived. That isn't the half of it. In Eve, everyone gets out in an escape pod, too, which is the last chance of survival before you lose your clone. The clone itself is cheap to replace, and as long as you keep it up to date, you won't lose any skills -- it's not that big of a deal. However, you can also plug in implants into your head, up to 10 of them in fact, and all of them can be worth more than your ship. I killed his pod, too. Think of implants as like enchants, and that every time someone blows up your pod, you lose those enchants. I ruined his day, and I hope to do it again tomorrow."
Some of them will be put of by the harshness of this. Explain to them what they can do aside from PvP.
Some of them will be enticed. Show them the game. Make sure you're somewhere relatively safe. The first thing you do is undock from a station, explain to them a few things about your ship, the station behind you, the fact that you can warp to all these planets and moons and stations, and then go to the jumpgate and sit there. Open up your map, and zoom all the way in to the system you're in. Explain to them that this is the system you're in. Zoom out a little bit, and show them the constellation. Zoom out again, and show them the region. Zoom out to where they can see the entire galaxy. Then tell them you can travel to each and every one of these systems and they all have the same features as the one you're in now. Congratulations. You have done all you can. ----- Griffin -- 100,000 ISK ECM - Multispectral Jammer Is -- 20,000 ISK Standard Missile Launcher Is -- 10,000 ISK War target sobbing over losing a fight in his T2 fitted Battleship -- priceless |

Ok first question: Is their combined iq lower than your shoe size? If so, don't bother.
You can ask them how their 'wack-a-mole' sessions are going. I got a peer to quit WoW using that one. Well, he wanted to quit anyhow but needed that extra push.....

I played WoW for a little over 10 months, but came to Eve on my own. Most people don't have the intelligence to realize that WoW is nothing but the same thing, over...and over...and over.
There is so much more content in Eve that WoW looks like it is still in alpha.

I'm currentley converting one of my very "i do Not like mmo" friends, he's not hugeley fussed about the whole space aspect, not really into fighting, fleets, huge ships, killing rats...
Nope, what finaley got him into the trial was the trade and industry thing.
Find out what ya friends like doing in WoW and tell them about Eve's version of it. Catch is i would guess that some of what WoW has to offer just isent compatible with Eve, esp. if your idea of fun is makeing a new dance move for your charicter and then teabaging the corpse of a dead npc. -

I've tried to convert wow players that I used to play Planetside with back in the day. I've even got a fair few of them to have a go at a trial and some of them even signed up for a few months. Their biggest disappointment was the repetetive PVE game in terms of missions, along with the thought of the loss aspect of pvp despite me telling them that that is the thing that makes pvp so awesome in EVE. The other thing that put them off was the skill system - the thought of not being able to grind it out to improve and the thought of never being able to catch up.

I've gone with honesty being the best policy. I explain that EVE isn't for everyone, that it's long term and complex with risks and rewards, asshats and really helpful people. It's not for a quick 5 second blastfest and it's not for faint hearted.
I've actually got a large number of my friends playing it at one time or another but they decide that I really wasn't kidding about it being unforgiving and often go back to WoW. or nowadays, DDO.

Sorry you can't I have tried many many times and if they really are WoW junkies then you can't. Then again ... I have quitted this game (yes I know this is my last account pending on cancelation) and I have stopped trying to get people to play EVE as well (have had some successes getting people into this game).
People that play EVE are those who love to some "hardcore" PvP... you got to accept loosing stuff and honestly that is what I miss most now but with the latest issues (I won't go into that again) I have quitted this great game... might come back who knows but only if CCP set things straight.
Funny thing is .... I have actually begun to play WoW !!!! still miss EVE but who knows but hopefully other games dare to have full corp-looting and such but for now I think the thinking of game corporations are that we need to make a WoW-Clone... nobody plays other games (wich is totally bull****).
I belive that people will and do love full looting and hardcore pvp...
However... I do think that in games like WoW there will be problems to implement full looting because it is hard to get gold atleast in early stages and things will cost ALOT, that way it is more easy in EVE-Online to replace your items if you loose it.

QFT. Still, it's possible to succeed quite well at converting people.
See, back in the day, there were just two of us EVE-ites in my particular social group. The rest played (and still do) WoW, Final Fantasy XI, MXO, and so many more...
Over the course of about a semester, while discussing the games we play and what makes them awesome, we all convinced each other to try each other's games out. Thus far, every one who has tried EVE has stuck with it. (Same goes for MXO, actually) while the WoW players have slowly been spending less and less time in that game, and more in EVE. I've tried WoW. I let my free trial run out, and never went back.
EVE sells itself on its own merits. It isn't for everyone - some people just don't like the way you can permanently lose your stuff in fights, or the innate backstabbing nature of the PvP world. that's okay. Not everyone in the world is expected to like everything.
NB: one of our biggest successes thus far has been a complete WoW junkie. They guy was seriously hooked. We brought him round eventually. He's not the most dedicated EVEite ever, but he's well into his third month now. ***

Show them the contract and market systems.
If they can see the word "Soulbound" or "Binds on Equip" tell em you will drop Eve and buy a 1 year sub to WoW.
Then demonstrate how great the market system is (See this mod? It's the best currently in the game right now, look I'm buying it nad no DKP!!!) or how Eve's crafting is ifinitely more complex than WoW's.

ive played eve for years long b4 i ever played wow and the thing that keep you playing wow is time restraints....eve isnt a quick fix and in say half hour to an hour you cannot really do much in eve especially if you factor in travel and also if you play with only one account.
you can do all sorts with that time in wow with crim flagging etc and scanning you cant even nip to make a brew or iron your shirt in eve
loss means something in eve and this is the big draw for most eve addicts but for a great many people that self same loss os what keeps people away
theres 100 bods in the guild im in wow wise and 90% have all tried and given up on eve because of time needed and loss and whenever i mention it in ts to the one other eve player all we get these days is snoring noises so i no longer try and convert them which is odd as they are all grown men and women and i thought eve would appeal to them a lot more

Well, I personally feel that you might want to take the maturity/iq/age of your friends into consideration (as mentioned above).
My take on WOW is this, Im happy Blizzard found a way to make piles of cash and stick around. I had alot of fun in their past games like diablo, etc. Im a hardcore gamer, vet of many clans, corps and fleets. I wanted something multiplayer that satisfies my love of complexity.
WOW is a MMO heatsink, it absorbs all the "Elfy" players and keeps EVE cool.

Don't try converting, there's the problem right there.
Try selling it as "something to do". Not all can play one game 24/7...no wait...look at that! You CAN play EVE 24/7 even if you play WoW
So sell 'em a trial try, "Hey check it out when ya can". If they care for space thingies, they'll try and when they notice you can play this AND WoW, like yours truly is doing, they'll stick around. Then when they get bored with WoW and need a break, they got a place to go.

First realise that despite the fact that WoW and EVE are both MMORPGs, they have virtually nothing in common.
You're converting people from apples to oranges, and they probably have a citrus allergy. -
If you go into your options menu, there's a difficulty slider. Put that all the way over to the easiest setting and you'll be fine. |

I disagree, I played WoW for about a year and got bored with it and tried EVE. I got bored in EVE because I didn't know what to do really, so I went back to WoW, but within a month of playing WoW again I jumped back to EVE. Then I got into LV and stayed for a long time with only a minor break to try Vanguard with some RL friends, but that lasted all of two weeks after beta and I am back in EVE again.
So it is possible to leave EVE for WoW only to come back because no other game out is as complex and interesting as EVE.

One made up word: "soloability" Eve is way way more soloable than WoW so there's never a time when you are forced to wait to do something. Number one complaint about WoW? Sitzkrieg. WoW is like an eternal gate camp in a sniper battleship.
In WoW you have to work your @$$ off grinding to get to the end game. As soon as you get there, they add 10 more levels and all your equipment becomes obsolete. In Eve, you are already in the end game. There's no stupid grind along the way. Your equipment is never obsolete although not always optimal.
However, the fact that many MORPG players are unreasonably afraid of corpse looting so, bless its heart and soul, Eve is not a great choice for the trembling masses. Eve has consequences for your decisions. Real consequences. In a virtual kind of way. It's also difficult to play Eve well and mindlessly, which is not really true of WoW.
WoW is to solitaire as Eve is to Freecell. Sort of.

I have yet to succeed in drawing a buddy into the game, but three points have seemed to make the biggest impression:
First, as has been mentioned - If you die in WoW, it costs you nothing but a few minutes being all grey and silver. In here, it can cost you months of effort. Risk and reward are related - if only in adrenaline.
Second, I played him that animated alliance map (can't find it right now). Kinda made the point that the things you do can matter longer than a few minutes.
Third, contrasting the "Serenity Now" verison of grief in WoW to the Guiding Hand Social Club version in EVE. My buddy is no fan of griefing etc, but it does make the point of how much more invovled and various Eve can be.
"Whack-A-Mole" is a cute analogy, will have to try that next.

I have one question for ya.... are your friends people that have no lives and hardcores who can play like everynight of the week and dont mind endless mind numbing dungeons over and over just to hope they find that great pair of shoulders, then they gotta do it endlessly again so another person can get them, not to mention everytime they run the instance they pretty much do EXACTLY the same thing...(hit the same buttons, kill the exact same mobs)? if they are then it will be almost impossible to get them to leave wow. (edit: not criticizing here, but some people DO seem to have unbelievable amounts of free time, actually im a bit jealous of this)
But, do they have lives? families? jobs, maybe even children, or do they just want a more immersive and "intelligent" gaming experience, and sometimes complain about the monotony of Wow?? if they do tell them they gotta try Eve... ...the way eve is set up, it caters more those this type of persons, i.e. offline skill training, if you miss a few days you dont feel like your left behind, just to name a few etc... Also...Eve has alot more depth for them if they like a challenge that they can learn at thier own pace.
of course, they gotta like living in space instead of killing trolls...if they like that there isnt much we can do for them here....some people like having an actual human type character also, and cant comprehend being pretty much known as thier space ship and portrait..again, cant help them here either. Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known. Carl Sagan |

These are the basic reason why they play WoW.
Time, being able to get a group together quickly (maybe random people but normally it works out well) and go to a dungeon and possibly get a good piece of gear.
The fighting in WoW seems more involved. Yes your pushing the same button over and over again but you also do some moving, example rogue has backstab which of course you have to get behind a person/mob to get. This makes it difficult but you can control you character more.
Some do like the fact you can't lose your items. These are the few I believe won't leave unless they are shown that losing the items won't be THAT bad if they are destroyed. I think they just spent weeks trying to get this one item and couldn't imagine losing it. I've attempted to explain that items are easier to get in Eve and that losing them wouldn't be as extreme.
Space games aren't very popular as you all know. Even SWG is pushing it from my understanding. They are least have a combo of space and planet. Sci Fi takes a certain kind of mind set to understand that its basically all the same except i can go up and down in Eve
So much to grasp too soon. Mainly the learning curve in Eve is HARDCORE. These guys pretty much all have degrees in computer science or IT or buisness. They aren't stupid, but the time it takes to learn all these new and weird things to them is overwelming. I'd like to point them in the direction of a few guides to assist them with this but they have to have interest first. The INTEREST is what i'm trying to show them. What things in Eve are interesting, entertaining.
I personally could sit mining for hours and not really care but i've always been like that. Doesn't take much to entertain me. Although i do get bored of that and seek other means of entertainment. Missions I have a big problem with in this game, I think they are crap and need to be reworked.
Thank you for those who have responded and have given suggestions. I will try some out, maybe I can start a reaction that will get them all here.

I was in a friendly gang and we were looking for trouble (gate camping but moving to different systems). I'm in a tackler incurses and we get the word in TS that targets are coming are way and all tacklers be ready. My hands were shaking. SHAKING i tell you. I couldn't figure out why the hell I was shaking but I knew I had to breath and focus cause things were gonna get real hot real fast. Finally we see the jump gates flash and hostiles show up on local. I'll never forget those intense seconds watching overview waiting to hear them decloak. Finally they did and the engagement took place. We had two kills and no loses. The adrenaline was going through me and I was loving it. No other MMO i've played ever produced those feelings in me.
I read all the whine threads people post and this and that, but it all comes down to this... eve is erally one of the best if not the best MMO out there. I've played SWG, EQ, very little WoW (mostly on friends accounts), Planetside and they are all the same (excpet planetside). Eve really is huge and there's so much to do it's unreal. I've showed the benefits of Eve to friends and they decided to stick to WoW. That's their decision and if they want to do mindless grinding of skill/level/items till they maxed out their char then start a whoel new one and repeat the process.... they can be my guest.

Every person has some diferent selling point. For example I drew someone into EvE just asking him what the graphics in the market (the dowchian channels or whatever) mean, as he knows more economy than me. He didn't answer and next I know he started playing. Didn't last long but I guess he had fun.
Some other friend I could never get them into EvE, partly because the tutorial, and me saying that it's some hours long and you have to do it, no excuses accepted. After that I can help.
But, don't spend ages trying to convince them, it's tyring and they'll ignore you when you talk about the game. I do when a friend talks about WoW (he wants me to play, I had enough MUD playtime when in university. yes, I consider EvE different).
After all everyone can have fun with different games.

Everyone needs a different bait.
Tell the crafting enthusiast about how every single ship is player made only. Tell him how there's a functioning economy. Tell him about POS industrial networks.
Tell the PvPer about alliance warfare, piracy, etc. When he tells you how much honor he gained in WSG last night, you tell him how last night you fought in a 150 man fleet to defend your home region.
You get the idea. Tell them what they want to hear. ------------------------- Sigs are for noobs. |

Edited by: Urduar on 08/03/2007 00:26:01 I've always been more interested in the depth of the market in Eve than the pew-pew aspect (was never a big sci-fi fan)..
If he's anything like that, mention that Eve has everything from Hedge Funds to IPO investments, and maybe link him to one of the best examples of a well-run honest business in Eve:
O'Mara Shipyards
If he likes the idea of building and running a true virtual company, maybe it'll draw him in.

WoW is just for kids.
can you say ******* RIGS? omfg... coming back to eve from WoW because you just have to grind b4 pvping "you gonna love the new stuff dom... rigs...." rigs have soulbound written all over them..... that's even a bigger contra for getting back to eve than having lag, blobfights, capital ship importance....
get my point? -----

The best selling point I have, is that in EVE, your gameplay is unique. I've yet to find anybody who goes about having a good time in EVE the same way. Even the most repetitive activities in EVE have a unique outcome. Mostly because of another player futzing with you. (Ore thieves, mission jumpers, gate campers, etc.) EVE is the only MMO that I've seen where your real life creativity can be turned to profit. EVE also lets you ignore the over arching story to what ever extent you please.
Contrast WOW & other MMOs that require you to run a dungeon or instance successfully before you can proceed, where the spawns and drops are so predictable that you can guarantee the outcome by following the same exact path as someone else. This is why I stopped playing most other computer games once I found EVE.
Simply, there is no script in EVE.

I love this kind of story - probably because I've succumbed to this jelly finger-heart-pounding-can't-type-worth-a-**** situation before as a tackler. Boy, you really can't beat that feeling.

I'd just wait for them to get through pubity then tell them bout a decent game where the End game never happens! Also tell em to bring the Sworw of 1000 truths!

Originally by: Drakolis Gorgunden These are the basic reason why they play WoW.
QFT.
WoW is designed for the masses which are generally simple people. Games like Eve are niche and are complex in order to cater to their userbase. If it wasn't for the complexity and the fact it weeds out most peons (well, we currently have an outbreak going on in the Eve community) which leads to a higher skilled playing level.
Getting right down to it, Eve is geared more to the sophisticated player and is actually something one can brag about in the gaming community these days. Whereas anyone can play WoW and be completely anonymous, in Eve there is only 1 instance and being successful is quite an accomplishment. Plus it is way cooler to wear your 'Can I have your Stuff' t-shirt to the computer shop and make fun of those playing wack-a-mole by telling them that in a few more years they might be mature enough to play a game such as Eve....
Yes conceited, but yes Eve is deserving of the title.
Some examples:
id Software vs Nintendo, ala Quake vs Super Mario Cavedog vs Blizzard, ala Total Annihilation vs Starcraft
In both cases, the second entity had a far larger playerbase but the first entity had a far better quality game.
