Missions seem to be no more then 5 au from any planet as far as I can tell, you can probe some one out easy, so I would think that makes even missions are not single player.
Any ways you are still competing to get missions and be able to stay in a particular station especially if you can be war decked, it just does not happen too often if you keep good relations.
Same thing with mining.

Originally by: Gwendolyne Croft WoW is not a option for me. Fantasy vs. S&F, and i'm more for S&F. The only thing i would like to have in Eve is, no - not walking in station, piloting my ship like in the old Elite days.
WoW has a bad design and the concept is not what I expect from a complex MMORPG. But at the end WoW has its community and fans like EVE does. I am originally comming from the classic middle-age RPG. But I am more a Si-Fi guy. I can live in both worlds.
At this point I don't understand your negative statement to walking on stations. I read those opinions now several times. For me it's some kind of sullen behaviour. It's one logical step for the development of a world we have in EVE. But CCP must have take care that you are not forced to do and use a separate server for that feature IMO. Otherwise I would agree to you: everyone should decide free what they like or not.
I read also many statements about older clones that they want have back their old EVE. Do we have a typical upcoming generation conflict here? The old times were better? In my pov those statements and opinions are some kind of narrow minded.

Edited by: Harlequin Kiss on 15/03/2007 07:20:07 I've been playing WoW hardcore since launch day... ~6 hours a day in one of the most hardcore guilds in the USA.
I heard of Eve 5 years ago and since then I've KNOWN (intellectually) that it's a better MMO than anything else out there. I've picked up Eve four times now at various times since, but I can never make it past the intensely painful first few weeks of gameplay where you run back and forth gathering veldspar with one or two Miner I lasers for hours and hours. I know Eve is unique in that the gameplay becomes better and better as more time is invested, but those first few weeks are just so crappy.
WoW has gotten so soaked in the mainstream that the culture behind it has gotten diluted down to its lowest denominator. I really want out this time, but Blizzard just introduced a fiercely competitive arena system that's just so damn fun and challenging.
I dunno where I'm going.

Here are some of my last thoughts as I leave this game:
I play both WoW and Eve.
Eve is the game that made me eat my words with my friends (I had said I'd never pay a monthly fee for a game).
Eve is the game that I learned alot from.
What did I learn?
A game that's not 'sharded' is not one for me ever again.
Why? Because the incentive to cheat/hack/t20/etc is massivly greater in non-sharded games. Doing this in a sharded game only gives one a bonus in their little 'world' (shard), where-as doing this in non-sharded games gives one a nice bonus in the only world.

They are two different genre's with two different goals. One is Fantasy, One is sci-fi. It's like saying GTA is better than HALO. Just doing a more fancy version of a google fight isn't going to prove anything as Warcraft is over-hyped by everything and EvE is not mentioned at all. Were the underdog --------

What the hell? The first mineral I ever mined was Crokite. Who says you have to mine Veld? And jeez now that you start with 800K in skills there's even less excuse. Get in a kestrel or whatever tier 3 frigate you can use and start pwning belt rats and 1/10 or 2/10 DEDspaces. You'll make a large multiple more ISK and have many times more fun. Mining veld is for people who want to atone for sins commited in a past life or something. Or maybe people who like, you know,... that kind of love.
Starting with 60k and having to wait 4 days to get in to a Kestrel, now that was hard. But now....?

It is matter of tastes. Yes, you can say: this MMORPG is better then that MMORPG, but it will be subjective opinion. EVE is more mature game with hardcore PvP and developed community, but really lack PvM(PvE) content, and also many players (like myself) prefer Sci-fi worlds.

Like one said about these games.
In WoW everyone can be the hero.
In EvE u can become a herolike player but there is no garantie.
Another thing what count for EvE is, that u don t need to be online 24/7 to get experience for your skills

personally, as both a WoW and an EVE player, I find that they both have different strengths and weaknesses. I played WoW for about a year and then tried out EVE with the reason being "I wanted a change of pace and/or scenery". It was and still is a refreshing experience to play EVE. But I also still play WoW as well.
For me, I mainly enjoy the market and industrial aspects of EVE, rather than PvP. The industrial and economic aspects are far superior to that of WoW. Combine that with meaningful risk and losses and then it can be much more rewarding than WoW. I have tried to come up with a parallel in WoW but I just can't picture myself "mining" in WoW like I do in EVE and actually enjoying it or benefiting from it as much. Sure I could farm up a bunch of gold and play the markets in WoW too, but it just doesn't mean as much as it does in EVE.
Unlike EVE, WoW has a much more developed PvE experience as well as many more kinds of environments. While this in itself can be very fun (the FIRST time through), once experienced there is little entertainment remaining, and it becomes a grind after that. And then there is in one aspect a parallel between quests and agent missions... But I never played EVE to have that kind of PvE experience, and I do agent missions expecting them to be more mundane and repetitive.
In the end, while most of EVE might compare with grinding rep and materials in WoW, it is the whole reason I play EVE. This is mainly because doing so is far more rewarding in EVE than it is in WoW. In EVE, there is much more independence and a multitude of possible "goals in life" for any given player. And all of them can be a very rewarding experience. But in WoW, there are much fewer "goals in life" available to choose from. And the very nature of the game sets you on a pretty much predetermined path up until the "end-game" at which point you have basically two choices: PvP or raid. And even then, with much less risk/effort involved the rewards are not nearly as fulfilling.
Basically, because of the greater risk and required effort, doing anything in EVE (even PvP) is more meaningful and potentially fulfilling to the player. WoW is very easy to pick up and is also much more twitchy compared to EVE. It also has much less risk involved, and the time sinks are less significant. In WoW, it feels like you are often presented with a carrot on a stick (ie- new epic weapon or armor) but you have run 500 laps (ie- grind rep) before you can get it. In EVE, that doesn't ever seem to be the case. Instead of a carrot on a stick, there is a meaningful goal to work towards with much greater rewards (ie- better ship, POS, Tech2).
I will conculde by saying that WoW is for younger, less mature players, than EVE. And when reading the forums, I appreciate that all the more :)
QFT! i could'nt agree more.
I will say this though i do really enjoy the industrial side of Eve / i'm starting to explore pvp as well, but it's the players market. Wow is very "Raid" driven which means that if you want to see content you are spending most of your free time with 40 other ppl that you may or may not like with a goal of getting OMGEPIX . it's almost like having a second job sometimes.
My mmo experience has shifted 3 times i started with (PRE CU) Star wars Galaxies, which i still love. Unfortunately SOE Committed corporate suicide by implementing Crappy "Upgrades" which destroyed the game. They lost 7/8 of their player base with that stunt.
Wow has and still is a decent game but it's to the point with me that it's no more than a glorified chatroom. there is no risk, no reward, and no interest (IMO) i log in to be with/around the ppl that i have developed relationships with, within the game.

WoW and EVE are very different games from each other on almost every level, so it's really fruitless to even try to compare them. WoW isn't even attempting to capture the same market or goals as EVE is designed for so...
That said, I find that my biggest complaint with EVE is that the interface is just very very clunky and aggravating to use. It lags up and is unresponsive at times for seemingly no reason, and very few commands are allowed to be hotkeyed sadly. I think that something like the Raid window from WoW would be an excellent addition for Gang mechanics to keep tabs on gangmembers. The current one is placed poorly under the overview, and its hard to react quickly because of this in part.
Another major issue is that maneuvering is very clunky as well in the game. You have to double-click everywhere to move, when it would be far nicer to be able to maneuver with the arrow keys or WASD. Tied into that is it being hard to get a good overall grasp of the battlefield like having a radar or something.
Lastly, it would be nice if some real defenses could be mounted as a fleet -- something like fleet formations to provide "overlapping shield defenses" or such to protect support ships, or even like "enveloping support ships with your shield coverage" or such would be nice. It kinda sucks trying to fly an expensive EWAR ship like a Recon and get popped instantly bc you're only a cruiser-hull and targetted early. Logistics is also almost useless from a fleet battle sense, so your people are basically sitting ducks and you just hope you pop the enemy first which is kinda crappy.

WoW... i played wow for 2 months or so... its ok when u get into it, but its a dead-end game. U reach lvl 60 (now lvl 70) and make instaces like a maniac to get ur equip. (that drops like once every month or so =/)... as for pvp: u get ur rank in BG¦s and stuff like that, but u dont achive nothing (correct me if im wrong). And u cant do anything against a higher lvl. EVE... been playing eve since 2003, this game is all about the isk... with isk u can do everything, without u cant do scuat . u never reach a top lvl (skillpoints) and with training skills u achive everthing, ships, guns, research ect. ect. aka. not a dead-end game. as for pvp: u can have a noob¦s sp and kill a good fitted bs with a few m8¦s -----------------------

Which is better? hmm..interesting...
I think it all boils down to the age old question...
"Who makes a better hamburger? McDonalds? or the nice restaurant across the street?"
I think almost everyone will agree that the nicer restaurant down the street makes a much better burger...but then why is McDonalds doing so much more business?
Alot of it comes down to "convenience"...its much faster, and easier to use the McDonalds drive through than it is to go to the restaurant, sit down, order the hamburger from the menu and wait 10 m inutes for it.....I think its safe to say that WoW has created the McDonalds of MMO's.
is this a bad thing? No, absolutely not, my hats off to them for doing it but are they better becasue they have more players? probably not but they created something which the modern day avg person perceives as giving them more value for their free time. A game like EvE might be seen to many as having to go sit down at the nicer restaurant and taking a little more time and effort which alot of people arent willing to do. Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known. Carl Sagan |
