Edited by: ToxicFire on 10/03/2007 14:49:22 I know this really shouldn't be general discussion but im hoping the mods will let it slip as I need a large populace to read this to get a general opinion.
For those of you who are familiar with WEP and wireless network protocols I'm looking for opinions from you as to what you think are the biggest vulnerabilities in WEP (which is an already broken protocol) that make attacks on the protocol and the high number of systems that still use it practical and easy, and such practicalities in attacking such systems.

I take it you have already consulted The Codex of Collective Wisdom?

WEP is like the lock on a garage door. Its there to keep people honest. The main reason for encrypting a wireless comminication is to stop people accessing your wireless netowrk without permission.
Ask yourself why would anyone want to see what i browse in the internet or download. I hope your online transactions and banking allready use secure pages.
Is the security in prportion to the value if the item being protected. Use any wireless security you wish it's highly unlikely to make any difference whatsoever

Breaking WEP means capturing a lot of encrypted traffic an anaylizing it. There are ways to increase the amount of encrypted traffic so that your cryptanalysis will go faster, though this increases your likelyhood of being noticed. In practice, it's unlikely anyone would catch you, except maybe on a corporate office network with a well-run IT department. Well-run IT departments don't actually exist, so you should be safe regardless.
Using WEP will decrease your throughput. For this reason, I prefer to just use MAC address filtering. Sure, a person can sniff the MAC addresses I use, but it's not that much easier than breaking WEP.
Most people don't have to protect their network against a determined attacker. The attacker simply wants free Internet access, and doesn't care if he gets it from you or your neighbor. Also, a lot of coffee shops have free wifi these days. Why go to a lot of trouble when I can just sit down somewhere with my laptop and have a latte?

if you want a secure wireless network, use WPA2 encryption. what WEP will do is just keep the normal wardrivers out because they wont bother *****ing it with so many unprotected networks around. but if someone wants to get in your WEP encrypted wireless it shouldn't take longer than 10 minutes with airtools.

Forget WEP - it's too hackable. Go for WPA if your hardware supports it.
WPA is still hackable but as I understand it the difference is that WEP can be hacked by the bored, spotty, oiks standing on the street corner whereas WPA needs a mobile van and a lot of time :)
Oh and turn off SSDI broadcasts. Not a major security feature but handy.
Either way if you have a wireless network make sure every computer on it has a firewall. Don't rely on your router because once they hack the wireless bit they will usually be on your network and behind the firewall. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

The only safe computer is one not connected to the internet.
