Some cool effects, but overall it was alright. The movie felt empty at the end tbh.

Sure. But all here who loved "300" can read Gates of Fire which is a very realistic describing of what was Λακεδαίμων/Σπάρτη. This novel is a perfect way to understand what was en jeu in the Battle of Thermopylae.

Easily one of my favourite movies of all time. They style to it was awesome. If I wanted realism I would go watch the history channel. Its a movie, you go to be entertained, not educated.

It's a very dramatised, holywoodised and gory film, not sure how far from the truth it is, but it keeps the quotation about remembering the spartans which is engraved at the site today, and for entertainment value was pretty decent.

the book is quite good, very fact based but as such is quite long windfed and a bit on the boring side, takes a lot of effort to get into it and really enjoy it.

The Battle of Thermoplyae has ALWAYS been a propaganda story. It was propaganda for the Greeks, for the Romans and every civilization afterwards that looked at the incredible odds that the few thousand that faced the might of the seemingly unstoppable Persian army. It isn't identifying with the victor that matters, it is making any achievement against incredible odds.
Just like the story of Horatio at the Bridge, Hannibal's march over the Alps or 101st Airborne at the Battle of Bastogne in more recent history.
I could toss out the English against the Zulus at Rouke's Drift too. That was 4,500 Zulu against around 100 English defenders.
Stories of incredible military feats will ALWAYS become propaganda, and there is little in the human makeup that will change that.
