It looks to me like one boring bloodfest... I can't understand all the hype about it. What's with the obnoxious overuse Matrix-style slow-mo in combat scenes? The ****ty blood-splurting sound effects? I mean, sure, the movie looks nice (esthetically speaking) but what else is there? Ok, so far, all I've seen is the official trailers and other excerpts which were only combat scenes, so that's as far as my knowledge of the movie goes. I'll still go see it because I'm curious and I like Frank Miller, but... yeah, like I said, I don't get the hype. --- High quality pics of ALL EVE ships!

ITs a very stylized look at the Battle of Thermopylae. Fracking cool look at it though. *

did you even read any of Frank Miller's comics?
if it follows the same trend as Sin City I will say that the movie has much less gore and blood than the comic book.
that said I want to see the damn movie -------

Well during that era they were wearing breastplates too. Which is something that would hide the bodies i guess, so they skipped that.
In reality they wore breastplates too.

thats debatable. pick up two different books on the spartans. One says they fought completely naked, the other will say breastplate (leather mind you).

That about sums it up for me. I saw it on Sat and you could have show me a 20 min version with all the cool fight segments and I would have been happy.
Anyway, here is the best thing to come out of this.

As someone who spent 4 years studying ancient Greece and Rome, let me say...
No.
Spartans didn't wear armor in combat, they just used shields, spears and swords. Armor in general was not very advanced in those days. People wearing leather and chain were the heavily armored troops.
Also, they didn't die, because of battle formations, and their shields. Arrows might tear through flesh, but they don't easily tear through bronze hammered shields with thick layers of leather/hide between the metal.
The '300' isn't as 'accurate' as Herodotus's Histories, which is the book that describes the battle of Thermopayle, but it's good enough. Please brush up on ancient greek history.

I don't get it. I mean it looks kind of funky- decent enough swords-and-sandles plot based a little on history, pretty battles, some OTT stylised characters. But whats the big deal? "Next level of film making" my ass. --------

As a Ancient Greek history major the spartan Soldiers wore a bronze breast plate. Which was actually more then the rest of the Greek soldiers of the time.
The old conclusion was based off of Art work. The conclusion based off of Art work had two flaws. 1. Spartans by and large were not artist, so the work was not produced locally. 2. The Greeks have a love of the human body and would portray as often as possible.
The Conclusion that the Spartans did in fact wear breast plates is attributed to the large number of bronze breast plates having been dug up and been dated to 500BC.
