Edited by: Ravenal on 13/03/2007 13:00:32 Made a suggestion a while ago to add a category to Sara Dawns awesome in EvE skill tool. The suggestion was to add a "jack of all trades" skill category to the "top ranked players"
Thats not available yet.. hopefully soon, but I would like to try and kickstart the category here on the forums first.
Using the statistics from the "personal stats" link in the in EvE skill tool you can see your placement in each of the ranked categories. Adding those number togeather you get a number you want to have as low as possible, the lower it is the higher you are in those ranked categories.
So, the lowest number character is the Jack of all trades in eve - ill try to keep a score of the top 20 similar to dr Caymus old skill thread.

NOTE: if SP < RankSum, use ln(RankSum^2), so you don't have newbie chars on top. Lower value is better.
you cant get newbie characters on top as they cant rate high in each ranked category and thus will have some mighty big numbers to add up ... and I did mention lower number is better ... right? . |

/me slaps forehead. I'd assumed we were only adding the numbers for each skill group up.
Adding values for total sp, skills, ranks and ratio onto it gives me another few thousand ... 51748.

But raises the question "hidden" in an earlier response as you are missing out skill categories. I however dont think it matters - they shouldnt be able to reach the top 20 anyway. . |

Edited by: Kazuo Ishiguro on 14/03/2007 23:14:55 Coming up with a meaningful 'Jack of all trades' measure is certainly an intriguing problem. It's harder to gain a higher ranking in one of the more sought after skill categories, like gunnery or engineering, so a high ranking in one of those deserves more weight. also, however, a jack of all trades should be penalised for putting lots of SP into fewer skills. My suggestion:
Jack of all trades rank of player 'p' = (sum over all sp categories, 'x':
rank of p in x * total sp of all players / total sp of all players in x ) / Skill ratio ranking of p
Of course, these figures would have to be compiled from data submitted to ineve.net. Strictly speaking, it isn't necessary to multiply through by the total sp of all players, but it helps to keep the numbers a convenient size. ------

I better get my number in here quick because I doubt I will stay on this list very long... I'm 2nd in Industry, 2nd in Science and 5th in Engineering, but my 13,159th rank in Gunnery and 10,920th rank in SSC serve as lead boots and a cement overcoat in this competition, resulting in a total score of 38,703

My suggestion:
The WEIGHT of gunnery and the "more sought after" categories are penalized by exacly that attribute . A jack putting lots of SPs into few categories will greatly plunge in rank points in other categories and thus wont make any top list. So no matter how you "boost" up one of your categories you will be losing elsewhere and it will thus be next to impossible for you to make any "high" place in the jack category.
What i am expecting is high skillpoint characters making this Jack category that do not make the top list of the other categories (perhaps just one).
oh... and yeah, we talked about the problem of the learning category earlier too. Seeing as I max that category I "should" also be tied for the first place but am still ranked nr 287 . |

I have a million SP or more in most catagories of SP
I personally thought the measurement for this should be the number of SP in the catagory that you have the lesat SP for example i have very little in trade and drones so presently my lowest is about 128k SP but I think Ravs idea is better

Edit: Wait! I have zero Drones skills, so that category doesn't even show up in my personal stats. I'm tied for last place (currently 15,238th) in Drones, so my correct total score is 53,941
Edit Two: Showroom update today... my new score is even worse: 57,787.
Dont really think we "need" to include empty categories - yet at least... not expecting many characters with empty categories to reach the top 20 list anyway (eventually). But yes, empty categories "should" be categorized as tie to the last place in that category ... similar to the first place tie in learning :S . |

Yeah, focusing on going "high" in one category results in low scores in another category ... the skills ratio vs nr of skills categories are a prime example of that. . |

On an interesting note for catagories that are topped out like learning im 332nd place ...... yet i have it at max. so im gimped due to the alphabet as only a few people have more than the max attainable sp in that area due to early skill bugs in beta can i but my self as joint 6th with everyone else who has the "normal max sp in that field " (5,376,000)
To POD or to be PODDED that is the Question ? |

Looks like the skill rankings aren't showing on the ineve.net site correctly.
Just a suggestion Rav but if you change the title to "top 20 jack of all trades or somehing like that you may find more people take note of the thread and give if it a few bumps until a mod makes if official with some glue ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
