Actually, I think SWTOR is good for Eve. SWTOR offers the style of gameplay that will attract the kind of people that Eve can do without. Ironically, I did not re-sub to Eve until I tried out SWTOR in one of the late betas. After playing it for about 30 mins, I knew it lacked pretty much everything I wanted in a space MMO (and SWTOR really is not a space MMO. It is a scfi MMO, but space has very little to do with it). Not long after that, I got the email about Crucible, and here I am again, after about 6 years of having not even thought about the game, much less having played it.
Eve is more for the people who want the mindless click-click-level experience without much challenge. It actually probably appeals to casual gamers more than most other MMOs, it is that lacking in any real depth. You can't grind/power level in Eve. That alone will act as a filter for people who have been playing Eve waiting for something like SWTOR.
And let me just say, the one huge red flag I saw in SWTOR (and I have been told a lot of MMOs are like this these days) was that most of the loot that drops is completely irrelevant. It's only purpose is giving you something to sell. There is no other use for it How lazy is that?? Is that really how MMOs are these days? Last one I played before Eve was EQ. |

Star Wow: Knights of the Old Hordepublic (which I am playing, for the record) will hurt Warcraft far more than EVE.
Because StarWoW is a mainstream, big IP, major marketshare type product, and it's good enough.
EVE is a VERY fringe product, with as hardcore a userbase as MMO's get.
Many longtimers leave, most come back.
EVE may lose a few thousand online for a few months, but it won;t take a mjaor hit.
WoW, on the other hand, should lose 1-3 million more Subs in the next 2-3 months.

Themepark MMOs like SWTOR relies on a high user turnover to turn a profit, as most people get tired of the game after a few months. So even if a lot of current EVE players is playing SWTOR atm (like quite a few played World of Tanks last year), they'll be back. Besides, EVE politics & drama is heating up again, and will generate renewed interest. |

If you like little choice and being led by the nose than SWOR is for you. This is not the sandbox [limited as it was] that SWG was and does not lend its self to a long term limitless play style we have come to expect from EVE. The graphics are nice but I can live without the rehash of the same locked in story base and will keep on playing with the EMU SWG for a planet running diversion.
Thank you CCP for an engaging and interesting sandbox to play in and for not following everyone else keep up the good work |

CCP has been trying to kill EVE for years now, they still haven't succeeded (although they came close with Incarna).
Oblivion, Skyrim, SWtOR, various FPS games, etc. are where I go to blow off steam for a few hours/days, but I live for EVE. TOR is nice and has some nice improvements over WoW/AoC, but also has some lacking bits.
Unlike WoW/AoC, the cities in TOR do not feel immersive. Coruscant is extremely boring with its wide open areas and no places to explore. All of the rooms that look like they'd be interesting are generally locked behind instance portals. There's no sense of "this is where people sleep, this is where they eat, this is where they idle" other then the cantinas. Lots of locked doors around, but it all feels barren.
Not to mention the rather simplistic economy and manufacturing system in TOR along with the magic mailboxes and gear that lasts forever, even if you die. |

GÇ£The salient feature of the games is that, as violent as they are, the player is removed from any actual physical threat. This has a profound influence on a player's tactical decision making. What cover does a soldier/player take, what rate of fire do they select, and at what range do they engage with the enemy when their avatar never "fatigues, never runs out of ammo, and simply "re-spawns" if killed?GÇ¥ ~ linky

It has pretty much decimated the corp (sic) my "main" (sic) is in. Not really an Earth-shattering loss since it was little more than a chat client with spaceships. The few who still log in have set up a SWTOR guild and report the others are there waiting and ready.
I'm going to hold out until I have conclusive proof SWTOR is more than WOW with light-sabers.

Star Trek Online has a more lasting amount of pull away from EVE than TOR.
No offense yet the more I play TOR the more it flatly sucks even compared to KOTOR. The running around over and over for small potatoes missions is getting boring FAST. And I will not be subbing after my month is up until things get ALOT better. (I had said 3 months but I doubt they can fix everything needed in that time)
Did EA seriously spend more money than the SW movies to "Try" to make a WoW clone? They should have ripped off EVE's Sandbox system not WoW. |

Indeed, even if it doesn't have sandbox elements, I expect GW2 to be hell of a fun game to explore. It's a themepark MMO but it's a highly dynamic one. As far as I'm concern, gameplay wise, SWTOR is at least 5 years too late to the party. |

lol SWTOR The American public's reaction to the change was poor and the new cola was a major marketing failure. The subsequent reintroduction of Coke's original formula, re-branded as "Coca-Cola Classic", resulted in a significant gain in sales, leading to speculation that the introduction of the New Coke formula was just a marketing ploy |

NickyYo wrote:I don't know about you lot but ALOT of our corp has gone inactive to play SWTOR. Am i delusional or is this affecting eve population seriously? Many are likely to return. SWTOR is not EVE, and EVE is not SWTOR. The two games have little in common, and appeal to different audiences. Sure there is the "it has lasers"-thing, but in the long run, EVE is a sandboxy type game where SWTOR is a more managed ride driven along by a combination of story and gameplay. EVE does have missions, but they do not (generally) send you across the galaxy holding you hand most of the way. SWTOR is more modern in that it knows it has to sell well among a wider range of customers.
What I do not understand is the terrible job CCP have done the last 2-3 years. From my perspective EVE is almost ready to fall into the SWG trap - dumbing down the death penalty and changing the mechanics to hide the fact that the back-end is incompatible with modern multi-core system.
I can understand why people who play EVE want to try SWTOR. They are likely to be Sci-fi fans, and at least a few of them will hide a secret desire to chop things to bits with "photon blades." Most will quickly notice the "theme park ride"-feeling one can get from "WoW"-type MMOs, but to be fair, it appears to have been very nicely done in SWTOR. The real question is:
"SWTOR killing WoW?" Unlikely, but the game does have a lot of small features that WoW could use, and Blizzard need to step it up to win some of them back. I ran into a lot of WoW players in SWTOR beta, and (it seems) even more in pre-launch/launch. Did bump in to a few EVE players, but the sharded nature of SWTOR (something I do not like in game design,) makes it difficult to judge.
On the server ques. It is worth noting that two EU servers are usually heavily congested. I was on "Bloodworthy" and that had 1h45m two days before official launch, so I changed servers. The two servers whose names got posted on a lot online are the ones with silly-lenght ques. All of the other eu servers have no ques or less than ten minutes (even last evening at launch.)
/TLDR: No, but blizzard should take notes |
