I'm still waiting for a bigger model though. I need a ferox or cormorant or something for my desk.
They are expensive, roughly one dollar a cubic inch.
Since tolerance isn't an issue, can't you just make one of each and then cast the rest using a good old fashion mold? Or even better, rapid prototype a mold.
Im not sure how to acomplish that. we have a foundry and everything, but i dont think they would be that detailed if you did it that way.
Damn, how much equipment do you have access to? Any yeah, you would probably loss a bit of detail in the process. Unless you made really complicated molds that is.

Its a full workshop. Its the schools metal, wood, engineering shop. And the classes can qualify for college credit. Everything is industry standard. We have i think 6-7 lathes, several welders. a cnc, the prototype printer. Welding stations and the foundry. We are lucky bastards.
Oh and i posted up 2 teaser photos of the brutix.

Surely Wal Mart sell cheap and cheerful digicams, like ASDA do?
Or am I wrong in guessing you're in the US?

Today I had business to do at the CeBit in Hannover (world's biggest IT fair) and the German importer of the zprinter has a boot there. I took a closer look at the color printer version of that printer (model 450, it prints the models in color like an inkjet does it on paper), and what it can do. Simply amazing, close to unbelievable!
If I would be millionaire, I would buy one on the spot!
Question: How did you get the 3D data of the ships?

I used TriExporter (will find the link in a bit) and then imported them into Rhinoceros 'Rhino'.

Actually, I was thinking of trying to model EVE ships using sculpy, and or making resin castings out of my sculpy models at some point.
However my clay modeling skills are inferior (despite some good successes), and in order to make truly detailed and accurate ship models, I would need a better way to match them to a good set of photo's/schematics.
IMHO though, people have been doing amazing things with making pewter figurines for gaming, and plastic etc.
It still tweaks my nipples that CCP can't do SOMETHING to make ship miniatures a reality.
I know for a fact that I would be scooping them up like drones taking agro...
I suppose however that demand projections just don't meet cost to manufacture... and we would be spending $100 per model or something to keep profit in CCP's corner...
Anyway, I will eventualy make a better stab at making my sculpy versions of CCP's ship as I get better, maybe someday I will be able to post em in picture form without getting all red in the face.
As far as the pics shown here, I envy you...
Depending on the cost, I would consider purchasing some of these from someone. It's just a crying shame the printer costs reminds me of the early TII market... Or the current rig market heheh. ********************************************* "Stars Die... Empires fall... We are dust..." ********************************************* |

yes we will, we have about 2 more weeks of printing, then it is a matter of coating the models in glue, then painting them.
The board could take anywhere frome 2 days to a month, depending how complex and sweet looking we decide to make them.
Im kinda mad that I wont have more than a few months to show it off/PWN people with it before i go to boot camp, but meh. ~~~~~

in response to the idea of eve models, i think a table top strat game of EVE ships would be kick ass..."Miss your fleet battle? No problem! Fight against your friends and ZOMGPWN there ass. Plan your next POS assault! Want it to scale? Buy a football field to fit a titan!" ~~~~~

Good luck to you :D You could make some truly massive modles. Physically we are limited to about a foot on each axis, realistically no more then 3 inches :P.
Has for beign able to do it in my high school engineering class, i am truly greatful to the Career and Technical training program and the local tax payers :D. And im sure ill be dipping into my own pockets come end of term :P. Again they are expensive. But oh so worth it i hope!

Maybe with funding and CCP approval.
We have a limited amount of material. and it takes the corperation a long tiem to ship us more. took like 3 months last time for the composite and some binder.

Yeah, and I was thinking about it and a tournament is pretty much out of the question because people would just use chess software. But great stuff, as a chess fiend I heartily endorse this and look forward to the results. ;)
