Sadly im not an expert photographer :( i can get basic pictures but i suck with lighting. when they are all printed and such im going to paint my set has close to ingame has i can tho :D. And the classes can qualify for college credit. Everything is industry standard. We have i think 6-7 lathes, several welders. a cnc, the prototype printer. Welding stations and the foundry. However my clay modeling skills are inferior (despite some good successes), and in order to make truly detailed and accurate ship models, I would need a better way to match them to a good set of photo's/schematics. IMHO though, people have been doing amazing things with making pewter figurines for gaming, and plastic etc. It still tweaks my nipples that CCP can't do SOMETHING to make ship miniatures a reality. I know for a fact that I would be scooping them up like drones taking agro... I suppose however that demand projections just don't meet cost to manufacture... and we would be spending $100 per model or something to keep profit in CCP's corner... Anyway, I will eventualy make a better stab at making my sculpy versions of CCP's ship as I get better, maybe someday I will be able to post em in picture form without getting all red in the face. As far as the pics shown here, I envy you... Depending on the cost, I would consider purchasing some of these from someone. Physically we are limited to about a foot on each axis, realistically no more then 3 inches :P. Has for beign able to do it in my high school engineering class, i am truly greatful to the Career and Technical training program and the local tax payers :D. And im sure ill be dipping into my own pockets come end of term :P. Again they are expensive. But oh so worth it i hope! Tacky lens flares in sigs 4tw!

If we were making those we would make a rubber mold of the viper part, and then just shoot up waxes to cast up a tree of models in base metal using a vacuum casting machine. Of course, the Viper itself is $200,000 as well as the cost of the various other machinery but this was for a large jewelry store doing lots of custom work. I can't imagine a school actually having a lot of the equipment you have access to, SLA and 3-D Printers are super expensive. Wish CCP would sell a chess set like this, would be really fun to have.

One of them had a CAD or CAD-like program and a machine that would carve what you did in a piece of some kind of foam stuff. Several years ago (I believe it was 8th grade, and now I'm a freshman in college) we had a class with many different workstation so people could learn to do all kinds of tech stuff. One of them had a CAD or CAD-like program and a machine that would carve what you did in a piece of some kind of foam stuff. It was pretty cool, and I think it could be used for something similar to this. Wish I could remember the name of it. Edit - Just read your comment about fanfest above. The only problem would be undercuts on the models and as long as the undercuts are along one axis it would be a realtively easy to make the mould.

I have done this myself with other miniatures. I have been working on a tabletop EVE game, just need miniatures, really. And permission to se the CCP intellectual property ^^. As for Detail, a plaster/resin mould set would loose detail, but not significantly enough to detract... and as a 40K player, half the fun of the game is assembling, painting, and detailing the models, I would assume most would agree with me. As for Mitari models.. where you have open struts, I would suggest making a solid core, and modeling the struts on top of the core. It would ba a lot stronger. This is my sig ^^

You'll have to make some sort of support in there of course since it wont self-support. Now, if you want those to be more free-form i'd print the arbitrator back pieces separately and then join them manually myself later. As far as in Rhino, you should be able to join the 2 objects using BooleanUnion. Are you using Rhino 4.0? It will let you do boolean operations using Polysurfaces instead of just NURBS surfaces so you can try converting to a polysurface or vice versa (Mesh2Nurbs or Nurbs2Mesh I think are the commands). Eve-mail me in-game and perhaps you can send me the Rhino file and I can get it working for you. Think I still have Rhino installed on the home machine :-) Cerwyn
