Hi, so as the subject goes I'm new to eve, only a couple of days old, loving it so far.
I'm on a trial acct but will probable make it a full acct when it starts getting close to the 14 days.
So I'm playing Caldari they seem pretty cool and from advice from my new corp am flying a kessy(?) with missile launchers. I was told that the kessy gets bonuses for using particular missiles so i stocked up a little on those, what i could afford anyway.
So far I'm running little missions for some faction, navy I think. I was doing will until i came to a Worlds collide mission, ouch i got to the second room and was just shot to pieces, I escaped and decided that mission was a little too hard.
So anyway I guess I wanted to ask, are missiles a good idea to stay with? I wanted to work on getting good skills before trying to get a bigger ship, mostely because I can't afford anything bigger and I though i could keep running the low lvl missions until i could afford something better.
I'm at work at the moment so i can't remember exactly what skills i do have but i think i can use standard missile launchers and rockets i think. I think heavy missiles are next, are these good and could i put them on my little kessy? Or do i need a bigger ship?
Any other advice people can offer to a newly started player would be really good as well.
Thanks

Use correct armor or shield hardeners to rats. Different faction rats make different damage to u and what u shoud use, u can ask from in game. People have em in BIO usually.
example -> Sansha makes Thermal and EM damage only. need Thermal and EM hardeners.
Another thing is, u shoud use correct missiles to rats also. Sansha loves to get EM missiles and thermal drones :)
Different faction = different damage 99% of cases.

Missiles are just fine. Indeed they are probably the most used weapon system in EVE. The Caldari Raven battleship is considered the best missioning ship in EVE bar none (and it is a missile ship).
Takes a bit to get your bearings in EVE and learn how to best approach missions and such. Your corpmates will be a great resource for help as are these forums.
Enjoy!

Cool some answers, ok I'm at work and while they are happy or at least ready to turn a blind eye to my web surfing I think I'll quickly be out of a job if i tried to install eve at work which is a bit of a bummer but oh well a few more hours then i can go home and see how my skills are going and stuff.
ok assult frig, this sounds like a pretty cool ship, now i noticed there are like 5 caldari frigs are there that many assult frigs are there? and which one would be better if I stick with missiles?
Ok armor and shield things, which one is better for my kessy? and since it looks like I'm going to be flying caldari ships which one should i work on that will make me harder to kill. I can't exactly remember but i think they were pith rats(?) what kinda of missiles should i use against them
Missions seem like a pretty easy way for a n00b like to me get some money together, and the time to learn skills, what sort of skills should i be working on early in the game? Ship skills so i can get a big ship or missile skills so i can shoot stuff better.

If you go for Assault Frigates I'd go for the Hawk (there are two Caldari Assault Frigs...Harpy and Hawk).
As a Caldari pilot you will want to focus on shield tanks and skip armor tanking.
As for training I would focus on building up your missile skills, learning skills and fitting skills before worrying about flying a bigger ship.

You are still early into your training.
It depends what you want to do in eve.
If you want to do stuff like running missions and shooting npc's, caldari is by far the best race for that.
If you want to do more pvp, then i'd advise looking at either gallente or caldari (amarr is also viable if they boost it a bit).
However, this from a powergaming perspective, if you think that your focus in the game will not be 100% competitive pvp, then caldari are just fine (and they have a few really nice pvp ships).

Reven,
A good guide for tanking: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=319967
A caldari beginners guide: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=490450
Anyway, for skills, do the learning tree first.
Instant Recall 1 Analytical Mind 1 Learning 1
Then repeat for level 2 / 3
Get yourself some useful skills - electronics lvl 2/3, engineering lvl 2/3, mechanics / engineering skills depending on how you want to tank, the basic missle skills that you're missing. Get the navigation skills, ie, afterburner, evasive manourvering, Fuel conservation, Warp Drive Operation. Keep on training the short ones first so you get a decent bonus early on.
Then when you're comfortably doing lvl 1 missions, do the the learning skills mentioned above to lvl 4. Make sure you set a long skill for when you go to bed / work so you dont miss out on training time.
I'd also reccomend downloading EVE Monitor... it has all the skills listed, great for playing around with skills, seeing what they do etc. And it optimizes the learning for you, so you make the most of your training time.
By the time the learning skills hit 4, you should know a bit more about what you're doing... hopefully the 2 above links should also help a bit too

ok shield stuff, missile skills and learning skills before a bigger ship check, no problem, and I want a Hawk sweet gives me something to aim for, I'll look it up tonight when i get on line and see how much it'll cost, maybe I can get it after a few more missions.
As for what i want to do, mostly I'm not really sure yet, pvp has some interest i guess, mission running seems cool, I tried a little mining and it was pretty boring, I could put on a movie and just click a few buttons every now and then I guess but not really what i want to do.
I'm not really sure how PVP works yet, people in my corp just advised me not to start shooting people yet something about the police coming and killing me, so not really sure how to pvp yet with out getting taken out by the cops.
I'm still a little hazy on the whole stat thing not sure what they are used for, so i tried for a pretty balanced approach to it. The guide to getting a +1 sounds pretty cool, so maybe i should try and do that. The tanking guide will take a bit of reading so I'll do that now and see what i think

Forget Assault ships for the time being, Its far more important to train learning skills and your basic support skills. (most lvl 1 lvl 2 skills). before training for Tech2 ships like AF's, dont run before you can walk, take things in eve 1 step at a time and you will do fine.

Ok, AF's which i guess are Assult Frigs are Tech2? are there any other types of ships which are tech2, what does that make normal ships like my kessy?
Does Tech2 just mean more expensive or are they better? whats so special about being a Tech2 ship, since i finish work in like 5 minutes I guess I'll go home and check this stuff out

AF's (and T2 ships) are your "high end" ships. They're improved versions of your standard T1 ships. They require a lot of skills to fly, and even more skills to fly well. I wouldn't bother with them until you have a couple of million skill points.
Basically, set your short team goal on all the basic skills to lvl 2-3 and a cruiser. Since you're Caldari, this would probably be a Caracal for you. It will cost you about 10 million with fittings, insurance, etc, so start saving.
Find a NPC corp you want to work for, and run missions for that same corp. By the time you can afford a cruiser, you should be ready for lvl 2 missions.
Oh, and never fly something you can't afford to loose. And always insure your ship :P

Yeah assault frigs are Tech 2, your kessy is Tech 1, the big differances between them are that Tech 2 ships are very superiour ships to there T1 counterparts, but also require a lot more skills and are a lot more expensive.
Ignore the prices on T2 goods listed in the item database on this website, pritty much all T2 stuff is very expensive, so you might be better off aiming for a T1 cruiser for now esp. as it will take about a week or 2 of dedicated skill training to reach assault frigates, and also because T1 ships are insureable for pritty much the full cost of the ship, whereas T2 ships are not - in other words it hurts your wallet to lose a T2 ship
My advise would be to get some shield skills to toughen up your kessey, it'll certainley do the job for now once you got a good fitting on it, and don't forget to keep moveing when in missions, standing still makes you an easyer target (you'll get hit for more damage)
Once you've found how to fly and fit your kessy well go for a cruiser, the Caracal is an awesome ship for low level missions, and will be cheeper than an assault frigate, esp. if you lose it.
Oh yeah and welcome to Eve -

yeah forget the tech two stuff for now, it's a pain and it's really not all that great, better, but not really worth it IMO. One thing you really want to do though, that I don't think has been mentioned, is train up SALVAGING, the little bits and pieces you salvage go for alot of money and if you get into rigging you can really enhance your ship's abilities without going for that expensive T2 equipment.

Edited by: Prophet Jurah on 20/03/2007 15:11:48 You don't need to fight on worlds collide. Once you know what to do it's one of the most easy missions. Just run as fast as you can to the cartel gate and then run to the next gate. You only need to fight the ones that attack you when you enter the third room. You'll want to stick with missles for now and attack from outside the range of the enemy. The kestrel can one shot 2 NPCs at once in lv 1 missions. You should save up and get yourself a caracal and heavy missles once you think you're ready for lv2 missions. If you have any questions feel free to ask me ingame.

The fun is not dying....
Edit: You don't want to join privateers. Apart from fighting like cowards and not being able to cut it in low sec and 0.0 with the real PvPers they're also not a good corp for a newbie. They constantly have most of eve at war with them and you'll just die alot. You should learn the game more and get some sp and a good ship before you join a PvP corp.

With a few warpouts, When Worlds Collide is doable with a fight, in a Kessie. Running through the second room I've never been able to do, so I don't know how not dying by running through it is possible.

Reven, there's enough threads on here about the Privateers. Go read, then form your own opinion. Also before joining any large corp or alliance, most of them will require you to have a certain number of Skillpoints, or be able to do certain things with your ships, as a bare minimum. I don't know what Privateers are like in that respect, but if you're that new, most people will want you to get some experience of the game before taking you on.

Morning all I want to say thanks for the welcome.
As for that worlds collide thing, i was headed towards the gate in the second room but was just totally owned, rat things there start at close range and while i was firing missiles as fast as possible shields and then armor just vanished, its pretty harsh mission really for a n00b. but i guess more experienced or better skilled characters would have better moduals then 4 standed launchers and a civilian shield booster.
well I'm downloading the new patch and ready to start playing, I was chatting with my CEO last night and he decided against privateers in the end, some australian (we're both australians) in 0.0, anzacs I think it was.
I'm not overly sure about this 0.0 thing since I'm only in a frig and they say there are BS(?) rats. I think i should stay in Empire, i think it was called, until at least cruiser, I'm not sure though could i take out a BS with a cruiser

you will want to steer clear of 0.0 until you can fly a battlecruiser or battleship with decent shield/armor skills, or you will not be able to make a lot of money out there.
It doesnt take long to get your learning skills up to a point which is acceptable, i had 2 friends start at the same time in january, one of them did his learning skills and now has 3.2m skillpoints and can do level 3 missions in a battleship. the other cant do level 2 missions in a battlecruiser and has 1.8m skillpoints.
Have you joined a playercorp already? a lot of your questions can be answered if you get into a decent sized(20+) playercorp with experienced players. --------------------------------------- Furious Angels are recruiting Carpe Pugya Pyga - Seize the Buttocks

First of all: be patient and learn by doing. After a while you get some +ah, I understand½ and things which seem complex in the beginning start to get into flesh and blood. After a year - I promise - you will feel like a taxi driver knowing his city like a frakking GPS.
Get tools like EVEMon and Quickfit. They are a must. With EVEMon you will learn to setup skill plans efficient with viewed schedules. Quickfit is a must to test ships and fittings.
Figure out what's essential to train to protect your ship and make it strong. Read always the forum for help, hints and setups. EVE need a learning process. You will find out what's your favourite ship. Try to understand the game mechanics.
And yes: an Assault Frig is a good first milestone. But don't learn just to fly the ship asap. You need overall good skills and ISK. EVE is awesome and has beaten my console games to death.
So say we all!

first I'd like to say thanks for everybody who has given me such good tips and for the convos in game with more friendly chatting and tips.
ok stay clear of 0.0 unless I'm in a far bigger ship check and no problem this sounds like a good idea.
I've noticed that there are a lot of things to learn, I think I'm getting the basic grasp of things which is pretty cool, the whole PVP thing is still a little confusing, how does one shoot other players with out the cops coming?
I was told about faction ships but what i don't understand is, if Tech2 ships are better then faction ships why are faction ships so much more to get? and why does it take so many lps to get one? would it make more sence to make it possible to get one from lvl 1 missions so a n00b like me can have a stepping stone between tech1 and faction? Does this make sence at all. As i understand it there are faction ships for frig, cruiser and BS I though it would make sence to make these possible to get from lvl 1, lvl 2 and lvl3/4 missions. But since i have to wait til like lvl 3 missions to get a faction frig whats the point trying to get one?
Tell me does this make sence to anybody else or am I just been a n00b?

Lose your fear of death by dying a lot in frig based combat (it costs nothing), learn all the many, many ways you can and will die. your attitude and knowledge of pvp will out do any amount of ISK, ISK which when dumped into a big battleship will go bye bye as soon as you enter low sec because you don't know how to pvp, you won't be aware of the many ways you can be killed, and so have no idea how to attack/defend, and losing all that isk will set you back weeks or months and leave a horrible taste in your mouth and you will have had one, horrible PvP experience.
So my advice is play with frigates (don't go near battle cruisers or anything expensive yet, you will lose it 100%), they are VERY cheap and with enough skill points to fit them out can KILL battle cruisers piloted by players who rushed (if not on your own, a small group certainly will), and rip cruisers apart with impunity.
Then, when you have a feel for the PvP in eve, and have confidence and experience, then and only then should you start fighting with the costlier equipment and flying the bigger ships.
ISK only enhances your ability, it gives you none.
Have fun, and welcome to eve :)

That is not entirely true. Certainly many corps will have minimum standards for new members to meet but likewise there are many corps out there that accept newbies with open arms. Indeed some even specialize in them (IIRC EVE University is one such that I hear many good things about...might give them a look).

In respone to your faction ship question.
The vast majority of faction ships are status symbols. Some are great tough. Especially the faction battleships tend to get used alot, though this is in no small part due to the fact there are no t2 battleships.
If EVE ships were cars the relation between faction, t1 and t2 would be something like this:
T1 is your standard car. Its cheap(ish) and does the job its suppused to do. Almost everybody owns one. Kind of a like a Volkswagen. :)
T2 is your high quality, luxury car usually with a powerfull and exteremly gas hungry engine. Rich people and people who really want/need a good car tend to own these. This might be a Mercedes.
Faction is that rediciously overpriced Ferrari or perhaps a very well maintained oldtimer. Very few people own these as they cost an arm and a leg and generally they arent usefull or efficient for mundane day to day travel.

Originally by: Reven Darklight I was told about faction ships but what i don't understand is, if Tech2 ships are better then faction ships why are faction ships so much more to get? and why does it take so many lps to get one? would it make more sence to make it possible to get one from lvl 1 missions so a n00b like me can have a stepping stone between tech1 and faction? Does this make sence at all. As i understand it there are faction ships for frig, cruiser and BS I though it would make sence to make these possible to get from lvl 1, lvl 2 and lvl3/4 missions. But since i have to wait til like lvl 3 missions to get a faction frig whats the point trying to get one?
Tell me does this make sence to anybody else or am I just been a n00b?
T2 > Faction > T1
So, for frigates and cruisers faction ships make little sense from a cost perspective. Some people collect them for the coolness value like a collector of rare cars does the same even though in almost every respect a 2006 Honda is probably a better car than a 1930 anything.
Where the flip happens is with battleships. There are no T2 battleships in the game (yet) so the best battleship you can get your hands on is a faction battleship. It is these that most people are grinding missions for (particularly the Raven Navy Issue). At somewhere around a billion ISK in value (or around 500k LP) they are not cheap or easy to get but if you want the very best battleship that is it for now.

Ok death at this early stage, is probable a better idea then death at a later stage, I think give the examples I can understand and even agree with it, of course seeing if i can survive and not die at all would be good too.
I was looking in the market at skills i can get and for something i don't exactly understand, i can train for Battle Cruisers, but I can't train for Cruisers yet, does this seem strange to anybody at all?
I think aiming for a faction frig would be really cool maybe if i get enough money together i can look at getting a faction frig to run these lvl 1 missions. Just wondering what is the caldari faction frig and what can it do? Is it a missile ship like my kessy or is it a gun ship? Is this Caldari navy faction ship better then a kessy or should i stick with the kessy?
And are there only 3 types of faction ships, frig cruiser and battleship and i guess there are only 3 for each of the races. Is this right or are there more out there that don't appear in the market because i noticed the faction ships don't appear there. How would i go about getting a faction frig and what is a caldari faction frig worth?

Edited by: Takayoru on 21/03/2007 01:25:01 Edited by: Takayoru on 21/03/2007 01:17:32 I am a re-noob myself. I played for a while back in 2003-4. The 14 day trial got me back in. It's a lot easier for noobs nowadays, believe me. I'd like to put in my vote to aim for a Caracal as your first major ship upgrade. I'm doing L1 missions in one and it's superb. An afterburner for looting wrecks, a couple or three shield boosters/enhancers and a capacitor extender(?) as well as a PDU and a someting (I forget what it's called) to enhance your missle launchers and you can whack 30 rats in a mission without breaking a sweat. Right now I'm in the market for a run-on sentence repair unit...
P.S. As always, never buy someting that you can't afford to lose. Insurance is your friend for when you DO lose it. Good luck.

Akutan hi, welcome to my threat and I'm glad that my n00bieness is helping others who are new to the game.
well so far I'm running a kessy, with 4 standard launchers 2 have kinetic damage missiles and the other 2 have thermal damage missiles. I have a shield booster just a normal one and just a normal shield extender, and I'm running 2 of these low medules, my old corp said it was a good idea to run them, what they do is there are like 4 stat things, shields, cap, powercore, and something else they add a small percent too, because otherwise the 4 launchers take all my powercore.
There are still quiet a few skills i want to learn but as per advice from above I'm sticking to the intelligence and memory and the learning skills, after all i can fit the missiles and shield things and I am only doing lvl 1 missions so i should be ok to make the 20-60K odd per mission.
One problem i did come across is i got this one story line mission I think it is and i got an implant. +1 to will power, I haven't actually got the skills to use it yet, but how do the implants work?
are these missions worth doing? I had to trave a few jumps and get some veldspare or what ever its called do complete this mission. And are all story line missions like this am i going to have to mine every time i want to complete one of these missions. And how often do they pop up?

There are more than three per race per class, if you count pirate faction frigs. It is true they dont show on the market.
As a caldari pilot looking at faction frigs you will be interested in the Caldari Navy Hookbill(or was it hookbil) and the Worm (Guristas frig).
The Hookbill is similar to the Merlin. It uses a split weapon system and has a preety strong tank.
The Worm is built around the hull of the merlin but is acutally more like a kestrel. It gets bonuses to missiles and three missile hardpoints. I like the Worm and used to use it while i was still a somewhat young player. To fly this ship you will need both Cladari and Gallente frigate skill up to lvl 3.
Not sure what they cost anymore. I seem to remember Worms going for around 30-40mil and Hookbills going for 50-60mil. This might be wrong and even if i do remeber correctly it was a long time ago.

so it would be a good idea to consider getting one of these worms and training the frig skills for a gallente frig. I guess that means i could consider getting a gallente faction frig, is their navy frig any good? and is it a missile ship or should i just stick to caldari and forget the whole worm/gallente frig idea?

Not sure what the gallente navy frig is. But its a safe bet its built around blasters and/or drones, something you are most likely not skilled for at this point.
Is it worth getting the Worm?
Well... If you can afford its price tag... Why the hell not?
That said. The before mentioned Hawk is very similar to it, cheaper and just plain better. Only bad side is that it requiers far more training.
People said that T2 ships require a lot of skills to be used properly. And this is very true. However the same goes for faction ships.
Also... If you are going to use your faction/t2 frig for lvl1/2 missions the bare minimum skills will be more than enough. In fact, unless you put some stupid fitting on them, these ships will be quite an overkill for such missions with any amount of skillpoints.
Considering all of this... If you must fly lvl1/2 mission in a flashy ship (who wouldnt want to? :) ) i would suggest the Hawk over the Worm. It is cheaper, stronger and the skills you will have to train just to sit in it will be very usefull to you no (unlike the gallente frig lvl3 which you might never use for anything other than the worm).

Best analogy for T1 -> Faction I've ever read.
Just missing the 'named' T1 items which are between T1 and T2. Generally, named are usually better in most respects than T1 (lower fitting, better stats). In a tight fit, T1 named are somewhat equal to T2 in stats (T2 usually have higher fitting costs but perform better with good skills).

i have a couple of more questions about rigs and missiles launchers.
I got really lucky, I think, and got an assult missiles launcher thinking this was really cool i tried fitting it to my kessy, hell no, it won't fit, so i guess whats the big deal with these things that they have so much more requirements then a standard launcher?
And rigs are these worth trying to get? I've seen a few prices for them and it seems they are worth 100s of times more then my little kessy and all fittings. Is this an accurate estimation of rigs, that they are for battleships and maybe tech2 other ships and not for frigs?
And if i should try for them on a frig what would be a good one for a kessy?

The assault launcher is actually a cruiser size weapon. You cant fit it on a frig while maintaining a reasonable fitting.
Rigs are, indeed, too expensive to be mounted on t1 frigs. I suggest you forget about them until you have the skills for at least a full t2 fitted cruiser.... or their price drops a LOT.

Honestly at around 25 million for a faction frigate I do not think that is your ideal progression.
For you I would go Kestrel > Caracal > Drake > Raven
Not only is the Caracal much cheaper than a Hawk (4.5 million or so) I think you would find it more useful at this point. Besides, you can fully insure that Caracal. You lose that Hawk and most of your money will go out the window.
That progression is all missile ships meaning you need not really train any gunnery skills. That said Caldari have some fine ships that use guns too so something to consider at some point for more options.

You can do a lot more damage with assault launchers than with standard launchers. The drawback is range. Assault missiles have a very short range compared to standard missiles. They are situational and not used often. Stick with standard launchers till you get more experienced.
Quote: And rigs are these worth trying to get? I've seen a few prices for them and it seems they are worth 100s of times more then my little kessy and all fittings. Is this an accurate estimation of rigs, that they are for battleships and maybe tech2 other ships and not for frigs?

Forget about rigs till you get into a battleship or a T2 ship. They cannot be removed and they are not covered by insurance. Yes, they are expensive.
If you are so inclined you can train Salvaging and salvage wrecks of ships you blew up and sell the salvaged materials for some more money. Rigs are manufactured from these salvaged materials. Salvaging is time consuming though and most people have 2 different ships, one for missioning and one for salvaging. Destroyers make good salvage ships, fast and a lot of high slots.

ah, implants :) these are cool, they can save you days on training time, even the +1 implants. To use them (shown as the option 'plug in') you need at least level 1 cybernetics, which requires you have level III in science to train. all the +1 implants cost from like 30k (charisma) to about 700k (memory), i would strongy reccomend you learn cybernetics and plug them in, as in the long run they will save you weeks of training time :)

Everything hotgirl933 has said since I've noticed her [his] posts has been nothing but trolling. I really wish a mod would ban her [him].
Anyways. As someone else was saying: There are many corporations out there that will accept noobies. Some are big empire-like corporations with aspirations to greatness like mine, and some may be a small corporation full of people who are just like you that are just trying to figure out what on earth to do, kind of like the way my corporation used to be when it first formed.
There's a lot of good suggestions as to what to do here. The main question has already been answered: missiles are a good weapon. They serve some purposes better than others to turrets, and likewise turrets perform some things better than missiles do.
As for further information: I suggest you stick to the New Citizens Q&A forum, which is intended for people like you who have basic questions about things like missiles (and any other relatively simple questions; no offense, but it is a basic question that can be answered in a sentence or two, and really belongs there [people do reply to that forum, too!]). Figure out what you think you would enjoy doing, because I can tell you from experience -- missions do get boring. Set a small goal of aiming for a ship that suits your style, and ask around, either through the help channel or the forums or your corp mates on how to set it up properly and what skills to train to properly fly it. While I'm not a strong advocate of the belief that there is intelligence to be found on the general forums, one universal truth that everyone here seems to agree on is that there is a differing between being able to pilot a ship and flying a ship. So keep that in mind. ----- Griffin -- 100,000 ISK ECM - Multispectral Jammer Is -- 20,000 ISK Standard Missile Launcher Is -- 10,000 ISK War target sobbing over losing a fight in his T2 fitted Battleship -- priceless |
