Someone started a thread about training skills from outside of the game to help fill in those gaps where you're not training anything.
I had a thought this morning about the same thing but a little different and more possible to do if the Devs already haven't tossed this one out the window.
Have the ability to queue only one skill to start training when the current one finishes. It's important that it's only one skill and not more, since queuing 10 skills defeats a lot of the purpose of logging in to manage your training, etc.
When I first thought of this I figured that the Devs would say, "Well, what's not to say that you can't be training skills 100% of the time?" Well, it's also possible to do that now if you have no job or school, so my idea just extends the ability to be able to train more and fill in the gaps "a little" more than we can manually fill in those gaps now.
If this was implemented, I can guarantee that I'd miss some queuing opportunities anyway but this would greatly help. I really think this could work.

Actually, I don't think it's a bad idea. If it's considered it's probably low on the priority list, but not bad at all. One thing they had before was that you didn't stop training a skill when you reached a new level.

It would be nice if you could que up to two skills. Not much but it would set some skill "slaves" free.

I think a queuing system would be a bad idea. If a player really feels the need to get up at 4am to start trainning a new skill then that's their lookout.
I think some people are forgeting the whole idea behind playing a game like EVE. Its to have FUN roleplaying.
It's not about manipulating the mecanics of the game to maximise your advantage, or looking for exploits.
Who cares if your character isn't trainning its skills 24/7 just relax and most of all have FUN while playing...

Make it a Rank 3 or 4 Learning Skill. Serial Processing. Each rank allows you to queue up one skill to be trained after your current skill.
Maybe even have it require Learning V. It should be there, but hard to get to.

I am not surprised it is an old idea and that it was not implemented. It comes down to the "You still need to actively play the game." As much as I would like to see the ability to queue even the next skill, its no big deal. If I go skill queueing, then I would ask for off-line piloting and docking. I could have my character trade 24/7 and only need to long on every day or so :)

offline play=good thing....no lag for server while still satisfying paying customers...;)
All in all, I think continuing to train in an existing skill when a level is gained fails to be a bad thing....

I'm the one who first proposed the skill queue. In fact I had suggesed that only 1 skill could be in the queue. Another idea I had was for the ability to target a cargo bin and select auto dump. This way you can set up your ship to mine and have it automatically dump it's cargo to the targeted cargo bin.

Great idea [and a great suggestion also from Gustav]
For those of us that have a life and don't want to log on erratically especially in the small hours. I'm suprised it's not already in the game.
[Funny I've done some bizarre things to get home early since playing EVE, the latest of which was an excuse to leave my GF with the car & shopping, I took the tube home. Fortunately her birthday's coming up so I've got a smoke screen for my erratic behaviour]

This is very good idea. Especially for situations when someone leaves for holidays (like 2 weeks) or something, and has no possibility to log in at all. Of course he could train some high rank lvl5 skill, but this's not always the case. ----------------------------------------------------------

Now that skills are not set back to zero when you change them is there a need for skill cuing?
When I know I'm going to be away from the computer for ten or more hours, which I often am I stop what ever I'm training in and switch to my level 5 frig skill. It's coming down slowly, but come the day I feel the need to have it, then hopefully it'll be down to a resonable level that I can do it all in one go. There's never any need to not be training, you just need to think it through, and by being able to change training part way through gives you a way to do it already

If they implement a queqing system, it's very simple, either you go for the RP way and get up 4 am in the morning, though I don't get what RP and getting up early has to do with eash other :P Or you can use the queqing system. Simple. Though I don't think that a queqing system is really necessary myself. ;)

I'm with Wyke on this one. Since you don't lose ALL of the training when you change, there's no real need for queing.
I think some people perhaps need an Effective Time Management skill, but i don't think we need to be able to set up training, log out for four weeks and come back to the pilot of our choosing, for the following reason.
There will always be powergamers, but as far as i'm concerned they can all bugger off to the Sirius sector, because once they've achieved their uber-character dream all they do is whine on the boards about the lack of challenges to their unbalanced skills.
ps, If you don't understand what i'm talking about, the Morrowind boards were (and may still be, but i couldn't stand the whining anymore) a case in point. They were infested with "It's too easy now that i'm level 30" threads. They had a skills-for-sale system where all you needed was cash.

If implmented I'd like to see an additional skill required for this in the learning category.
Each level of the new skill would grant the ability to queue one more skill in the learning process.
e.g.
skill level 1 -> 1 skill in training + 1 queued skill level 2 -> 1 skill in training + 2 queued
etc up to a maximum of 5 queued.
Should be an expensive skill to buy though, and maybe have some "minimum" requirements in termns of player attributes (intelligence, memory etc)

There should be no reason for skill queueing, IMHO. All it takes is a little research, a little forethought and planning, and you can be training skills 24 x 7 365 if you want. You just have to know how to select which skills to train, and when, so that you are always on when the next skill finishes.
Say for example, I just invested a sizeable chunk of the bounties I recently collected/profits from mining & trading/sale of ill-gotten booty from wayward adventurers who unwisely crossed my path at chokepoints in Sovereign space (:P) into several rank 1, 2, and 3 skills. Rank 1 skills take 20 minutes on average to train to level 1, Rank 2 take twice as long, and so on... You could easily work out a schedule as to which skill to train after the last one completes so that you don't miss the the time when the next one finishes for real life reasons (sleep/work/sex/whatever ;) ).
It's not a perfect system, but as the game goes on, there will not be a large disparity between people as far as training times, except for those people who don't invest in learning skills to boost their prime requisite statistics for their primary character.
Besides, the game is about getting out into space and INTERACTING with OTHER PEOPLE, not with scheduling another skill and then leaving. What's the point in that? Where's the FUN in that?
Just my two ISK...

I like the idea.
Sometimes I feel that people have an unfair advantage to me when they have no life ^^
I dont mean to be rude to people that play it all the time, but I would rather these people beat me because their intelligent thinking and creative business sence outmatches mine, rather than the fact they stay up till 4am to get those extra valuable hours of skill learning in ;) ---------------------------------------

I dunno why they dont skill queue already, all theyre achieving is getting people to get up at 5am to click one button and then log out to go back to sleep...make it easy for us people who live outside the game get some sleep please ccp! [Kaeri] |

I don't like the queueing system, but I think if I just trained xxx skill to level 2 and I didn't stop it, it should just keep going.

I'm not fond of the idea either, i feel it kinda takes away from the "dedication" aspect, you have those who train skills that dont cut off while sleeping or at work, or wake up at 4am just to change a skill, so i agree with how it is now :)

screw queuing, itll just be more of an automatic game then, i say bring back the (before mentioned) skill-continues-to-train-next-level-also feature, that made total sense, if u aint there to change skills, it has trained a little bit torwards the next level at least. superb God i gotta change my sig..

What the heck is with all of the people saying that adding a queue will take away from the dedication aspect? There's this thing called reality, which usually involves school or work. Some of us want to be able to queue up skills so that when we do play eve, it IS dedicated because we have the abilites to enjoy the game to the fullest. I for one don't want to have to get up at 2 in the morning to save 4 hours, what's the big problem with just letting move on to a predefined next one?

I'm with you... it's a nice idea but not really that Important, you always have some skill to get to lvl4 That's gonna take 8/9 hours and as you can stop and start training with no real penelty. you just need to manage training and timing better!

Well, if you're on vacation in Africa, it would surely be nice to have some queue system. Make it so you can do it only once per year or something. I'm still annoyed when I couldn't train any skills for over a week because of a vacation, and the unability to log on with the eve client where I was located!

The only time when you run into trouble training 24/7 is in your younger days when all your training is lvl 1-4, for that reason a system that starts training the next skill lvl would be a good thing IMHO. For older chars that have plenty of lvl 5s that can be trained and some really big ones ( like rank3+ lvl 5s ) I see no reason to change anything, it doesn't take much effort to set those up so they finish training at a time that's convenient.
Oh and you NEVER EVER LOSE SKILLPOINTS( except for dieing with a crappy clone ;) ), you can change skills without penalty, so if you see a skill is gonna finish at a bad time train another one. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |
