Our corp helped to test however, we came in at the end of it. From what we had experianced it was nice.
The pro's ability to control it in game and not have to run windowed mode or window out to mute or leave a conversation.
Con's I had realtek card and the only issue I had with it was lagging up my game play some. That doesnt mean that our whole corp was able to use it. Out of all our members only four of us were able to get it to work. Some feedback even on headsets kinda was anoying. Voice delay echoing also became annoying.
We did like the control ` feature to leave the mic open and turning it off. Hated the mouse wheel also deactivating it.
All in all good program, like Skype better. If it wouldn't lag game play.. I would not mind paying the extra to have it. Just my two isk worth.

Since this is only single computer-farm datacenter located in one location, its natural you (AUSIES) have lag (you suppose to be a computer scientist and all). LOL No lag here in EU.
And yes it has more bugs than there are on my porch in summer time.
Concider this an ALPHA or BETA release if it makes you feel better. Its free for 30 days to test it, soo you have nothing to complain about.
Test the damn thing, let them know what needs fixing. Its 2007 ffs, everything is doable in this day and age.

Just a privacyquestion! How do I Know that CCP aint gonna jump into my privat/corp/foo chat? since one knows that staff can read every mail one sends etc...
Whats your standing about that?
I just wanna know since we all dont want any unwanted listeners.
Its a very good implementation and nice program you just pulled in. The features one needs later on in fleet-ops etc I hope you will get it working!

Well, with this feature CCP answered a question nobody had asked. I for myself would prefer, if the GMs would answer my petition, which is open for more than 3 weeks now without a single word!

Map your mouse5 button to a key on your keyboard, like control for instance (EVE can use ctrl. + nothing methinks). Most mouses come with software that will allow this, otherwise there's a good chance it will work with generic logitech software. Then in EVE bind vivox to the key bound to mouse5. Presto, mouse5 vivox.
The thing that this can't be done yet in EVE is one of the many issues that should have been solved before release imo. As it is the program will probably not hit the playerbase at large, meaning there's not much use to register for it unless your group/corp/alliance does not have a 3rd party server available. I for one won't reg after the trial if it has not been patched to par with current 3rd party alternatives and/or it has other added value like being used by a large part of the playerbase.

Edited by: Corowin Nightbringer on 22/03/2007 16:30:32 I will most defiantly not be subscribing to this. I think it is ridiculous that we have to pay for EvE voice. I donĘt see why we should pay for something we can get in other places for free. Also, before anyone says that $9.95 is so cheap that it is worth getting even if it is rubbish, it says promotional price. So after the year you pay for, it will cost even more. No thanks CCP...

10 euros for a year of serive works out to about 3 cents a day for voice, in pretty much any channel in Eve. That equates to 80 cents a month whereas the maintanence cost on a 100 person ts server can be astronomical by comparison. Even if this is a promotional price they could easily double it per year and it would still cost less than hosting an equivalent TS server, and the cost would be spread fairly rather than as in most cases 2 or 3 people out of an entire corp footing the bill. ----

Please elaborate on plans for not having to pay per enabled account. Please elaborate on whether you plan a light client that can be used without the Eve client.

Has there been an instance where 100 people have been in one particular channel in the new eve-voice system? If so, how was the performance? |

Originally by: kieron As reported on the EVE Online home page, CCP Games has partnered with Vivox to bring EVE Voice, an integrated voice chat system, to the EVE Community.
CCP is currently offering a full year of unlimited EVE Voice access for the promotional price of $9.95. EVE subscribers are eligible to receive a free, 30-day trial of the service. CLICK HERE to activate your free EVE Voice trial. (Service requires an active EVE Online account. Game subscription reactivation fees may apply.)
Nice feature (in theory), but way too complicated to set up. If it takes me longer than 30 minutes to figure out how to make it run then I'm no longer interested. And I did read the FAQ, play a bit with router settings and even ran the testyourvoip.com test (which said its 4 - good). I however can't seem to complete an echo test (I only hear other people when running that test) and I didn't figure out how to bind talk and gang talk to my mouse buttons.
I was interested in buying into this service, but now after over an hour I am disgruntled. Teamspeak just works. Maybe I will reconsider once you make it more easy to install. Gather player-written installation success stories and then maybe more people will actually pay for it. Improve the setup and it might be more of a success.

I thought this was supposed to bring enhanced features to voice communication? As it stands, it is a watered down, more confusing, less functional version of Teamspeak. I had hoped for channel commanders, hoped to be able to see who was talking with an icon/dot in space, hoped it would be easy to setup, hoped it wouldn't lag so much, etc.
Teamspeak is more stable. How can you expect us to use this in fleets when we can't even run the game? How are fleet commanders supposed to get through to the fleet when the game lags? With TS, if Eve is lagging, TS doesn't.
TS IS cheap, for 100 people, it would cost $230 dollars (Linkage) which is $800 dollars cheaper then having those 100 people pay $10 each. If a single person doesn't want to pay for all of it, you get everyone to donate some spare change. It's not that people can't afford to pay for Vivox, but why should we pay for something when we get an alternative that is much better? ________________________________ KIA Recruitment

Because this is endorsed by the company that produces the game that it is run on. EVE-V has been out for a few days (ish) and is bound to be buggy. Patience, understanding, and support are the best ways to help it onto it's feet.
One of the main advantages of having an integrated voice-system is that the features for that voice system will be specific to EVE, which means down the road they can toy with this feature however they please, adding to it and removing from it.
This is advantageous to you because the system is for EVE, and not for any other game, which means EVE-specific features will come with time.
The best we can do as players is to take their free-trial, test it out, report bugs, and let them do what they get paid to do--which should not include getting smarmy comments from players about how much it sucks and is a bad idea. No one complains about how bad of an idea it is until they can't figure it out themselves. ---------------------------------------The dead remember our silence, the dead remember our indifference. |

From the linux side:
Enabled voice......locks up wine. cedega works, but local/corp windows vanish. using voiceenabled=0 in prefs.ini fixes the issue. So for the "we want to support multiple platforms", this is a complete no-go. This also applies to mac users. Funny, on linux, I have native teamspeak, and ventrilo works via wine just fine (with a tweak or two), yet the INTEGRATED voice client requires winxp sp2 or win2k sp4 ONLY. This is most likely due to VIVOX only coding for certain things (but I'm guessing there).
Funny, voice over IP works brilliantly via skype on linux/mac clients as well as...wait for it......Vista. yet a voip client built into eve (which works on ALL of the above systems...doesn't.
I'll be sticking with vent/TS thanks.
Oh, the free 30 day trial is very simple to activate via the account page...where oh WHERE is the "deactivate voice" choice?? hmmmmm???

Apparently, it's a firewall problem. I could log on.

I have the same issue with the mouse. I could just remap it to some other button, but i really dont want to. As it is now, as a generic button, it controls forward and backwards in browsers and in explorer (windows, not internet).
Also, vivox is WAY too quiet...

Maybe this is a stupid question. But just how much upload bandwidth does the voice client use? I noticed that if I do not allow server status to the voice client, the game won't load. Now, I have no problem with shared servers, but my cable provider might. If the upload bandwidth is "too much" they will throttle back my connection, basicly considering it a bandwidth hog.
Anyone know?

I tested it with the free 30 day trial, the voice quality is dire (people sound muffled and as if they have a cold) compared to TS/Vent, the comms kept breaking up and the guy I was testing it with broadcasting stuck and couldnt stop the audio and was forced to relog lol.
O and my mic was really quiet according to my mate, even though i turned the boost to max and the input to max, and at the same time was perfect on TS.
Not even close to worth the money (even though its really cheap) in its current state, id rather spend the 50 pence on a bag of crisps , however if you enable it in local id pay the money if only to smack ppl via voice
So I don't sound all doom and gloom, "its early days, and im sure ccp will sort it and it'll turn out to be super duper".

Edited by: RiotRick on 23/03/2007 08:54:44 With my current headset I can't get output to a reasonable level. Even with input on max en boost on high my output is still way to quiet for anyone to hear. In the windows mixer my mic is on max volume and mic boost is turned on.
In TS / Ventrillo I also havo to boost my mic, but at least there I can get it to an acceptable level.
I do find the in-game voice chat a nice addition though. If I can get it working right I probably subscribe to it. Just the fact you can join any chat channel with voice is really nice.

Quote: EVE Voice is a premium feature and it will cost xtra to use it, we'd rather do it that way than raise the subscription fee for everyone. But the upside is, if you don't like it, you don't have to use it.
Quoted from another post, Wrangler I think.
Does CCP plan on in the future bringing more "premium features" that require people to upgrade their accounts financially? I find it a little bit disturbing, not the 1 buck or whatever, but the fact that CCP is introducing "premium features" which is based on real life economy. Is it a step towards paying for special services, like was seen in Everquest, where there were premium servers with more GM's and thus better service? It is a good initiative with EVE Voice, but can become a dangerous line of thinking
