Edited by: insanebe on 24/03/2007 00:12:51 Edited by: ******** on 24/03/2007 00:10:29 Playstation 3 launch has been met with ....indifference,
At the Virgin Megastore in London's Oxford Street, Microsoft gate crashed and handed out chairs to those queuing that had a website address printed on them.
Anyone visiting the webpage saw an Xbox 360 branded site that "welcomes" Sony to the next generation and mocks the Sony for being "late"
London saw the biggest turnout and all those that turned up for the midnight event also got a free HD TV,
but in France, Germany and many other places crowds of keen gamers were conspicuous by their absence.
Microsoft once again tried to crash the party in France but they need not have bothered themselve's, French gamers were outnumbered by the media on the boat Sony moored by the Eiffel tower to act as a temporary electronics store selling the console, as Microsoft drove its own boat covered in Xbox 360 logo's close to the Sony craft, Microsoft cruised the Seine in a boat sporting a signs on either side that read, "Xbox 360 loves you." (microsoft really need to get out more lol)
in Berlin 50 gamers got a free PS3 after smashing their Xbox 360 by throwing it off a wall.
In Amsterdam only a "handful" of gamers turned up to pick up a console.
One of the better attended events seems to have been in Prague in the Czech republic where more than 100 gamers queued for the chance to buy a PS3 soon after midnight.
About 80 customers turned up for the midnight launch in australia and the Sydney Morning Herald called it "feeble", the first Australian PS3 owner, was at the front of the queue despite only turning up after 9PM.
Sony has declared its launch of PlayStation 3 to date a success, saying early sales are faster than those of its predecessor PS2. knowledge is power.... guard it well |

I work part time in argos; we sold NONE today despite having several in stock and advertisemens since mid february. As far as i know, we took about 5 pre-orders which were dlivered this morning. To put it into context, we still have a massive baglock on our wii orders.
All the comments on our large "PS3 RELEASED!" banners were about the absurd price. :|

I'm not a console person but the only reason I'd ever consider buying a PS3, or 360 for that matter, is for the DVD side since they are cheaper than most current Hi-Def players. __________________________________

Sony practically blew their leg off with the PS3, what parents are gonn ago out and spend ú550 (for PSú game and extra controller) for their sprog in middle of march? makes no sense whatsoever, even adults workign its wrng tiem to release cos they wont get paid til NEXT friday (end of month) all in all it seems they just dont give a rats behind about european market.

Although as a consumer, I'd consider that a bonus. By the time next Christmas comes around, the price will have dropped a bit and the games catalogue will be a lot healthier. Christmas releases are always a nightmare for we the people, since we get the most overpriced tag on the crappy Version 1.0 model (bugs included, free of charge) and nothing but the lacklustre release titles, all at the time when you really want to buy one. --------

People waited for days to get a PS3 in the US.
Dumbasses, the system has bee one of the worst console launches ever. Horrifically expensive, no good launch games, and overhyped and given a tiny supply.
People bought them, used them, and returned them. I see PS3s on shelves everywhere. I see 360s as well, but they still sell heavily.
And then there's the Nintendo Wii. I managed to get one on launch day without any waiting. Costco ftfw, they had several, I got one, my brother got one, and I spent the next month playing twilight princess, which came with the console (along with excite truck).
Now I have 4 controllers, and several games. Rampage is pretty lame, Red Steel' reminds me of Goldeneye, Excitetruck is fun, and Zelda just ruled. Not sure what games to look forward to, Dragon Quest Swords is going to be pretty cheesy, Smash Brothers will be fun, as will a couple others. I'm looking forward to a solid RPG.
Oh, and if Nintendo/SquareEnix has any brains (well we know SE doesn't), they'd make FF:CC not require a handheld to play with friends, and they'd make it play like Secret of Mana, one of the best adventure RPGs of all-time. That includes the on the fly co-op.

So is nobody going to actually comment on the console itself, does nobody have one? I guess this proves that either a) its too expensive or b) a flop. Me hints the Sega, Nintendo route for Sony in years to come lol. I liked the PS2, that was until the Xbox arrived with Xbox Live. I am really interested to know what online features the PS3 has to offer in comparison to the 360's "Live Marketplace". If you havent already guessed, i own a 360 and to be honest i'll never get a PS3 unless they pull something that beats the 360 out of the bag. The 360 is an amazing console, i remember reading about somebody who linked 28x 360's together to make one of the most powerful server clusters but thats beside the point. The 360 has a really good online service that will be hard to be beaten. And the added advantage of being able to "flash" the dvd drive at no added cost which lets you play copied games online... no more paying some dodgy fella at a market to "chip" your console :)

Bottom line is someone at Nintendo is going to be getting a fat bonus for completing a project as well has the Wii.
And someone at Sony will be looking for a new job.

I heard people were accidently throwing the wii controller through their large screen plasma/lcd tv's playing things like golf etc. that cant be good for sales :).
Microsoft never made a profit on sales of the consoles for the original xbox, they only made money on the games... so i wouldnt be suprised if Sony claws back on games sales alone over the next 12-24 months. i mean friggin hell the console is stupidly priced atm. In the industry this must be the "impulse buyers time".

A fairer comment would be that the 360 has took a massive chunk away from sonys previous total dominance.
All about marketing the product as the thing to have, sony did it for years with the brand playstation... i work and socialize in working class environments.... people that arn't gamers (just a console under the tv types, they play on 2 or 3 times a week)... words on the lips whenever somebody mentioned games in the past was allways playstation.... now it's allways 360.
Thing is (aside the price) most casual types allready have a 360... little chance in hell they were ever going to shell out intialy on a ps3... if they ever went back to a ps at all.
That being said, im suprised there weren't enough gamers out there to ransack sonys intial stocks.

In Glasgow, the midnight opening wasnt that busy, with most people (around 30 at the St Enoch centre) arriving around 23:30. Their opening times were midnight to 01:30, so cant comment if others came later on.
So, first impressions of the PS3, even after all the naysayers and doubters are very positive. It is a very slick machine, the menu system is very nice and connecting via wi-fi was an absolute doddle. Its big, heavy and shiny, oh so very shiny, in fact its a fingerprint magnet..
The playstation store is quite cheap, tekken 5:dr is about 7 quid, gripshift was just under 4 quid. Gran Turismo HD concept (a bit of fluff knocked up by polyphony to have a gander at GT in HD and supposedly not indicitative of GT5) is very nice to play.
Of all the launch games i got resistance (medium/good, online its quite fun but no warfighter 2 co-op), motorstorm (wow, loads of fun and darn sexy to look out), F1 (love these games and can only get on PS :( ) just feels spot on, and finally virtua fighter 5 (slick and nice to look at, the sim of fighting games).
So, ive had it a day, and ive got a wii and 360 to gauge it against, and its a most welcome machine to the party. This isnt a brag of 'oh ive got all 3' it just means i hope that im being unbiased and have lots of choice in the future. For me the PS3 is a damn fine machine, and im very happy i got one.
Ok, now onto the niggles, removing the emotion engine for running ps2 games hurts, maybe a bit more than the xbox games that didnt work on the 360, only 1 of the 5 games doesnt run, damn it! i wanted rez to run and gradius 5 still, at least r-type final does without issue.
Took me ages to work out you cant change the background colour of the menu bar, then i realised it changes colour with the passing of the day... doh! heh heh heh. Other gripe is the caching of data onto the hard drive when you just want to play the bloody game, software updates require you to manually restart the game, unlike the 360 autostart after an update. The controller is a bit lightweight, but, is very sensitive the new R/L2 triggers are excellent and the dual sticks are very accurate, and surprisingly (a sentiment echoed by a mate of mine) you dont really miss the rumble function..go figure.
Damn bit of an essay, apologies to anyone who fell asleep while trying to read.
Ps3 gets a big thumbs up here, and i can happily report there have been no fights breaking out between the 360 and PS3 with the wii egging them on in the background. They've all been told the leccy will be withdrawn if any shenanigans occur.

true and not true. yes, people were destroying various pieces of furniture, appliances and pets with flying Wiimotes, but it was a result of the v1.0 straps that came with the remote. the string on said wiimots is approximatley 0.5mm think is is subsequently prone to snapping _IF_ (a big if) you act like a tosser and hurl your arms about like a tard. in spite of said tards, Nintendo promptly offer a service to replace all your wriststraps for free with the improved strap (string approximatley 2mm thick). you just go to the website, stick in your name, address and console Serial Number and in a few days you have up to 4 brand new replacement straps for free.
Sony are effectivley shooting themselves in the head. they have done some things for the european launch of the PS3 that still amaze me and im perplexed as to WHY they have done them. For instance, if you were to purchase your PS3 in europe, and you went for the 20GB version. you would find that your WiFi was disabled. forcing you to pay for the 60GB version to use the WiFi. Also, they took out the emulation software needed for playing backwards compatible titles. if you want to play your old PS2 and PS1 titles on your european PS3, you'll have to.... you guessed it.... pay extra! you will have to pay for the software to play your old games, and you will only be able to play the games that sony choose you can play. all of this for ú500!
i really hope to god that this is both the coffin, and the nail in it for Sony. because then, all the decent developers will trun thier attention to the decent consoles, such as the Wii and 360. and if im lucky may even get the Final Fantasy titles back on my Wii.

I hope you're wrong. Not because I'm a massive shareholder in Sony or anything, but because another global Microsoft monopoly is really not something the games industry needs right now.
Theres always been a sort of unholy balance in games consoles. It was the "Playstation / N64 / Sega Saturn" (sorry Sega.....) trio way back when, then it was the "PS2 / Dreamcast / Gamecube / XBox" four way (sorry Sega, again.....). Now we have the PS3, XBox 360 and the Wii. The Wii, bless it's awesomeness, is not a high-spec console competing with the other next gens (it's in a league all of it's own, with its innovative ideas), so that leaves just a "PS3 / 360" double act, in terms of next gen console wars. If PS3 goes the way of the Dreamcast (god rest your soul, Sega) then that leaves 360 unopposed by any other consoles for high spec games, with the only other likely competitor (PCs) also being a Microsoft monopoly.
And what have Microsoft taught us about how they deal with monopolies.........?! --------

Only fools buy a console at launch. The clever ones wait a year or two until the price has been cut in half and the console has great titles.
And as far as blueray goes, who cares? Blueray is doomed anyhow similar to the psp. I laugh at people who bought psp.

Ah, but you make it sound like the Wii isnt capable of competing against the ps3/360 simply because its graphics arent as good. the quality of graphics is not what defines a next gen console. the X360 has sold 10 million units since its launch over a year ago, since the end of november, the Wii has sold over 5 million units. Nintendos market share is growing, and growing fast. So what if sony die out (which they sadly wont) and fail to produce another nexgen console? you make it sound like as soon as Sony drop out, the next MS console will have a free market so monopolise. However, given Nintendos obvious show of genius and proof that they are infact the market leader in console innovation and design, coupled with the fact that if sony DOES die out, all of the developers like SquareEnix and Namco will migrate back over to nintendo, and along with it inherit a lot of must-buy titles and franchises. Nintendo have been around for nearly 25 years in the home console market, and it damn well shows that they know thier stuff.

the fact that 360 has sold at all in Japan is quite an acheivement.

Neither the 360 or wii even compare to the ps3 in my opinion. Got my ps3 on friday morning and i've been hooked since playing motorstorm and f1ce.
My 360 hasn't been on in months to be honest, and when it is on i need surround sound just to cover up the noise it makes, and in my opinion the graphics are much better on the ps3. Even the console itself looks much better, the controller is just right for me and and it feels like a ₤500 machine.
I don't own a wii but have played on one at a friends house and i don't see what the appeal of it is. The graphics are even worse than the gamecube, and the novelty soon wore off (literally half an hour) before i was bored of it. So glad i didn't buy a wii, even that friend has returned his and traded it in for a ps3 and is loving it. |

Well, there's no arguing with the fact that the PS3 is a more powerful machine- it simply is, spec wise, better. Bigger better faster stronger. And I would also certainly agree that the Playstation controller, in all it's incarnation, beats that monstrosity of an XBox controller hands down. Which is all the chap above mentioned in his post.
But that's not what makes a winning console, is it. For most average gamers, PS3 is too expensive, is compatible with the wrong HD-DVD format, isn't compatible with their PS back catalogue, and the games released for it aren't as good as the ones on the other consoles (or at least those are the usual reasons people give for not liking it). And on that basis, both the 360 and Wii come out on top.
Good internals and a nice controller hardly justifies ú500 for me........ --------

Edited by: FooB2 on 25/03/2007 18:01:00 yes, of course the PS3 is better than the Wii, thats why even though there was a minute amount of PS3s released i can still go and find one in any shop, because they all still have them in stock, and if i wanted to buy (another) Wii the shortest amount of time i would have to wait is 1.5months because of the huge backlog of orders.
edit - as for the controller, yes it has the best "shape". but its by no means the best one. it may have worked for the PS2 but since then they have lost even the most minor features like a simple Rumble'/dual shock feature. and just in desperation tried to jump on the Wii bandwagon and add a motion sensitive part. problem is, it only works in 6-directions and just fails at everything apart from being the most half-assed attempt at a new controller.

Nah, I love the Wii. If I were to buy one of the three, it'd be the Wii without a doubt.
All I mean to say is that its an entirely different beast. When a developer is deciding which console to code his game on, its always going to be EITHER the PS3 / 360 OR the Wii. A Wii game would never end up on a 360, and a 360 game would never end up on the Wii.
So when, for example, Gran Turismo are deciding which console to put their series on, they'll be deciding between PS3 and 360, because the Wii isn't suitable. So if you consider Gran Turismo a "killer ap", then those are the two competing consoles. Equally, when a company are deciding where to release their party-sized collection of multiplayer mini-games, it'll be the Wii unopposed.
So when we're talking about competing "next gen" consoles, Wii doesn't count. Not because its not pure genius, but because it's just not in the same competition. --------
